Need a favour from all you lovely long wing fliers... Could you possibly post any pics you've got of juvenile peregrines and juvenile lanners? Im struggling to find decent pics online and just want to compare the two... Plus its a chance for you all to show off your birds, and we all know how much fun that is :P Thanksa bundle! :D

Hello
The eyass was produced from a 50% Peales 50% Peregrinus falcon with a pure Peregrinus Tiercel. So the eyass is 25% Peales I have a couple of opportunities to breed some 75% Peales this coming season.

Agreed Neil, but how many peregrines have barbary or other sub-species in there line. Hence not pure Peregrines.

None in any of mine except the one half Peales. Which was down to my own research when selecting my breeding falcons and thanks to the work of Stoopdoggydog (Steve) with Defra They all have a family tree. Not that the mixing of sub species is a bad thing, its just not for me.

Mike,
He flew pretty good too. I'm not much of a tiercel guy so when I fly one I'm looking for a breeder. That tiercel caught some partridge, field fare and bounced off sharptails:yawinkle: I think it was the last day I flew him I lost him. Released the tiercel and lost him. A few minutes later I see this speck stooping a flock of birds and think to myself, "A wild peregrine" It was him then the chase was on. 20 miles east and 60 south I caught up with him. He'd fed but I was able to get him back. He's been making babies since. The first falcon I bred out of him was a small bird but wanted to fly at a very high weight. She took pheasants, huns and a starling. The starling flight was the best. A few days later she killed a pheasant and was killed by a horned owl. That was the most manuverable peregrine I've seen in my life. She could knock a pheasant down and almost beat it to the ground. :) This new falcon flys very well but due to time limitations I've called it quits with her for the season.

Oh jeesh, I sent the bird back in August:) I suppose she got lost and is living the good life in the Bahamas. Kids!!
I'm trying in the worst way to get out of this breeding. Will only keep enough birds around to breed one if I need it. I just gave away a nice pair of peales to a friend, it looks like this place is going to end up as a retirement home for elderly anatums.

Sure Colin. How's your back? :) I'm simply tired of breeding birds even though I do it the no fuss way. The adults hatch and raise everything. Haven't run an incubator for a while. Food in, falcons out. Still it seems to me I'd rather be hawking and not tied to a bunch of breeders.

Hello Brad the backs not great, but no worst either so I can cope with that.
I decided on imprints has they would thrive and adjust better in the built area where I live in plus my yard is small so pen sizes for breeding pairs was not a option. I tend to get a little fed up with the time comitment with imprints especially at the breeding time, its just being tied down and missing out on holidays with the kids ect, its the family that pay the price, yet my wife and kids support me 100%. On the otherhand when it goes right and you end up with a few nice eyasses and I think I had a hand in producing them I feel as I have achieved something and feel quite proud. As I along with alot of other breeders that follow the AI route I am self taught. I can remember the the first time I collected semen on a hat, and my first falcon that stood I was over the moon. On the negative side just as the falcons are standing and laying this season. My youngest son is on a rugby tour to Ireland which I would have loved to have gone to. At least his mum and nana will get to go.
And I watch him at home and away for the rest of the season. I think if I had the space and right enviroment and I had the chance to start again I be tempted to go for natural breeding pairs. The ony worry then is to make sure somebody will but food in if decide to go away for a few days. As for Mr Butterworth!!! my life seems to get more hetic as I get older Thomas running circles round me, mine you he loves to get out with the falcon's and dogs so as he gets older he might become a asset. And now a Grandaughter. Well next time I come up I bring the clan, and you can have a glimse of my world.
I am sure Thomas would be pleased to see Uncle Mike again :)

Hi Colin,
I did do the imprint thing for about 10+ years and quit once I got what I thought were peregrines that would breed without any intervention ie AI. Back when I started I worked for the Govt and would take my lunch here at home to work birds. Get up, work imprints, go to work, run home at lunch to work imprints and back to work again. Come evening I'd work the imprints again. It was a labor of love without a lot of success at first. Then I started the chamber birds but that wasn't very successful at first. There were some successes but a lot of failures. Then when I had birds I'd produced things all changed. The eyeases were, at first, put in with the adults at 4 days old then I began to let the birds hatch them. Now it's all gravy since all the natural pairs copulate. Oddly I changed one old breeding pair to another chambers this year. None of the eggs were fertile. Now they were back to their old chambers so I expect fertile eggs from them this year. It's easy this way because I only want to produce birds for myself anymore.
If your wife and kids support you then your doing something right. Good !
Oddly my life has gotten more hectic recently. We are caring for a grandson which has put a real dent in the falconry. I've got several good birds and can hardly find the time to fly them anymore. Some years it seems I can fly birds with a lot of success and others I have to almost pry myself away just to fly one. This is one of the latter years. The only really saving grace is this passage gyr. Unfortunately I'm so used to putting up an old peregrine and going for a walk which I can't do with this gyr. Getting proper slips for her is always difficult especially with grouse. She flys great, goes up beyond expectations and the stoops have to be seen to be believed. I've eaten a lot of crow in the last year because I used to say, "nothing stoops like a peregrine" Now I'm saying "Nothing stoops like a passage gyr.":yawinkle:
As I get older I appreciate the time I can spend hawking much more than the breeding aspect. I always wanted to fly birds I liked. The anatums are what I like but just getting out with good friends and getting quality flight is what it's all about anymore.
Granddaughter ! ! ! Congrats on the granddaughter. They are fun. A friend brought over his 1 yr old daugher she was facinated by my moustache and couldn't leave it along. Also when I carry my grandson on my shoulders instead of holding onto my head he grabs the stash. Sort of reins.
Brad
