Do you have a first aid kit?

Jimmy

Put some corn starch on it if you have any. Cold water or ice may help slow the bleeding as well.

will wound powder do it

Yes, if you have some powder, give it a try.
Don't be surprised if it bleeds for awhile though. It'll eventually stop. It's gonna take awhile to heal, and even longer to grow back.

Worst case scenario yes. A proper first aid kit would contain an coagulent such as silver sulphate/nitrate. I cant just remember wich it is.

It would also be wise to go ahead and fatten the bird up for a week or so while the wound carotonizes (hardens back up like the talon). If held at weight, the bird is more likely to jump around, and get it bleeding again.

How has the bird managed to do this at this time of day?

By was I take it its stopped? Worst case scenario you can cautorise the bleeding area. Seen it done and a recovery but it looked brutal. Try lamping when the rabbits have actually had time to come out. I.E. later in the day you will have better chances. Also in true darkness the hawk will not be as tempted to land on objects and fail because of half/poor light.

I suggested clear nail varnish! to coat it helps prevent infection.

i think before we all start throwing ideas and sugestions towards this guy,
we need to asertain what the extent of the damage is and also
where the damage is located,

is it the talon itself which is injured / split etc,
or the actual talon base between toe and talon,

course of action required for the 2 above scenarios is totally different,

it will take a long time to grow back but if it starts bleeding again use and i'm not sure of the spelling potassium permanganate it stops the bleeding almost straight away.
