Try the bulb Brian ;) failing that have you checked the wiring from switch to light to see if it has burnt through or not

Check the actual switch. Have had similar problems before mate. Worn contacts in the switch assembly itself.

ah not sure on that score Brian. I would have thought the bulb would come out. The RAF defender's did, it was a case of a tight fit but it did unclip

BrianM

its just a three pronged clip .. when unclipped the whole unit comes away with the bulb inside:roll:

Let me get this right, side lights work ok, headlights dont work unless you turn on the main beam, is this on both sides or just one ?? and how old is the defender ?? If my knwoledge of my defender is correct the bulbs were removerable there is a spring clip that holds the bulb into the light housing, if it is both sides I would test the lights/bulbs befor replacing as it is unlikley to be a light fault more likley to be a relay or a switch, I don`t want to disagree with anyone but if it was an earth falt none on the main cluster would work as the bulb wll take the same earth for dipped and main beam.

ahh now we are getting some where dave 16 year old 90 ,, all light work exept passenger headlamp, when on dip .. works on full beam,,, the headlamp is a sealed unit with three prongs

Just went back to the same website and looked at the defender 90. Same thing it sells the bulbs seporatly so it must be able to come loose.

Well that`s a pain in the ass, if it is only one side and after reading the wiring diagram it is probabally the bulb, however I would check it befor you replace the whole unit, here is a pic of the wiring diagram, I have just read the workshop manual which covers 1993 - 1995 and it does not show a change in the lamp, and it shows a removable bulb either covered by a rubber gromet or a screw fix plastic cover. Have another look and just make sure that it`s not removable sometimes you have to be a bit heavy handed to get the covers off as they have to be waterproof.

brian |I have my manual out if yours is 16yr old is that about a g reg (mine is) anyway it says that you remove the rubber seal without damageing it and then you should see the retaining slips for the bulb. It has from 1987 - now and it seems to be saying that you can remove the bulbs on all of them.
Any chance of a pic of your bulb. Why pay for the whole thing if its just £2 for a bulb

Well I`v never seen one like that before, it might be worth seeing if the standard lamp will fit with a changable bulb so if you have got a wiring problem and you blow the bulb again you hav`nt got to spend so much to fix it.

you should be able to replace the lights with the modern halogen bulb units, you will have brighter headlights too. failing that to make sure its the bulb swap the headlights over and see if it works ok.

I would definateley say its one of the elements gone in the bulb. So if you can't get it out you'll need a new one!

Then its up to you on figuring out how to save maney for the sake off a bulb!
