View Full Version : NEW M-J Designed Dutch Hood

GriffMJ

Hi All

Based on the Slijper Hood... I have set to making a hood block that would acheive the same fit..... and here it is..... a Dutch hood with the fit of a Slijper Hood.... the hood block is Peregrine Tiercel size. Other sizes will be available during 2007.

The hood featured here is the first hood off the block...... due to the substance of the block i cant put too much pressure onto it..... but when I receive my resin version I will be able to produce better made versions.

Hi Terry

Dont know about the cost of the blocks yet..... havnt decided fully if I am going to sell the blocks. The hoods made from them will be £55 each as normal. As you can see the fit is great and it slips on with no tapping or adjustment..... I cant wait to get a resin block done so I can really burnish the hoods made on them for maximum effect. Over 2007 I will start to make a small block set that will cover all the average sizes that I normally sell...... what I will be really concentraing on first is a Blocked hood for the Goshawk.... male & female .... this Dutch/Slijper style should be a true fit for Accipiter :D

Hi A'd

Happy new year :) I need to send the "Mouldmaking" block down to the factory to get copied .... it will take a couple of weeks from tomorrow before I receive a resin master. The Dutch/Slijper Hoods will cost £55 each, as normal :) Does your F Lugger take a Tiercel size hood already?

Hi Jeff

Happy new year :) Thanks for that, I will make the Gyrlin version shortly.... I have your hood size already so it should be straight forward (he says)...... its going to take a bit of time from start to "resin master" but I will keep you updated. Everything that you liked about the "Sultan" hood will be in the new block :D

size 4 anglo. she hoods ok in an anglo but detests a dutch? i'm sure they have a wider head (different shaped head) cos we've tried alsorts of different sized dutch but non seem to fit aswell as the anglo, hence the real interest in your design.
i presume your getting different sized blocks or just a 3-4 to see how the first ones come out?
atb, happy new year 2u too!

The Dutch/Slijper Hoods will cost ....... :D

the dutch whatty hoods, typo? how do you pronounce and where does the name come from. i recon you should combine the two and call them the
MJ SLUT HOOD. pmsl:D :D

 ...... The name "Slijper" is pronounced "Slipper".... Hendrick Slijper of the Adriaan Mollen Club in Holland invented the "Slijper Canon" in the 1950's. This canon was produced on the principles of fit from the best of four Indian hoods. The canon was designed to take one measurement from the head of the falcon so that a complete hood could be made from it.

Hendrick Slijper is still alive today, at the age of 86, and is one of the oldest members of the Adriaan Mollen club..... Hendrick is also better known for his illustrations of birds in many books.

Hi All

The initial three dimesional scan has been completed on the new M-J Hood block, Surface smoothing and symmetry will now be completed shortly to provide an "Ultra" accurate hood block. The hoods that come off these blocks will be called "The M-J Hood"....... and should be ready for production by the end of this month after getting a small set of blocks made.

Griff are these being CNC machined? ( need to speak to you sometime re the gloves)

Hi J

Yes they are going to be machined and they will have size increments put into them at the time..... I will be getting a small set made initially covering the normal size ranges that I make.... and then I will expand on the set as and when I need to. The other benefit to doing it this way is that any modification requirement can be done via a phone call :D This hood should fit Hawk & Falcon alike.... with a modification to the gape opening pattern only.

Having used the #1 hood on my Tiercel for a couple of weeks.... I can say that its just getting better.... one movement to hood (Light tight) and then an easy draw on the braces.

Give me a ring about the gloves ...... if you need them back I will put them in the post tomorrow :)

Hi All

Here is the cross section view of the top of the block ready for symmetry... The finished file will not be completed until next week due to a trip to Germany. The left side of the block will be used as it has the best shape..... the centre line in the picture is slightly off "true" in the picture.

Considering the block has been made by hand & eye..... I didnt do a bad job for symmetry :supz:

Hi Onyx

The design is my own.... so naturally I am taken with it. However..... I am still doing the conventional Dutch hood. I am just finishing off the photo's to put in the Dutch section :D The choice for people will still be there through three types of block..... COBRA, Rollins and Tait..... just give me a little more time to get them sorted out in the website.

After seeing the pictures of the fit I decided to order a Cobra hood and give one a go.. To say I wasn’t a little sceptical about theses new hood blocks would be a lie but I must say this is the best fitting hood I’ve had.. The ease of fit, gape clearance, maximum eye room and obviously quality of the hood make this a great hood

Also anyone new to falcons who is a little unsure of hooding technique then this hood is the best I’ve had for simple slip on fit- no need to re-adjust the hood on the falcons head to achieve a good comfortable fit / Mike

Griff can you do the black and red in Arabians :?:

Yes Ahmed :D Although the hood above is more of a dark orange than red...... the Brown hood above has red eye panels. I will have to slightly re design the Arabian (I was going to anyway)..... to make it a 3 part hood like the Damascus. I will also attempt to make a Syrian & Bahraini version. There is nothing wrong with the Arabian COBRA as it is..... its just I want to experiment with the traditional Arab designs converted for the COBRA block.

Hi Penelope

I am afraid that due to the postal strike and the shear volume of work I have :supz: It might be closer to Xmas before I can even think about starting the long awaited "Vader" hood. Its still on my to do list at the moment..... my main problem is coping with the amount of hoods "not received" due to the sodding strikes

Blocked on the COBRA #125 (Gos fem) with a neck size that will close down to a COBRA #117 (Gos Male). At full closure the hood shrinks to a Finnish Gos Male size ......on half closure it will fit a Finnish Gos Female :D The hood has been part burnished around the eye bowls to get strength into those areas, otherwise the rest of the hood has been left in a soft state for maximum comfort. Hi Aman

Leather braces that slide smoothly with just the right resistance that then "click" into the closed postion so you know the hood is at the fully closed position. Its a specific technique applied to the hood and the braces in order to achieve the "click" :D

Hi Griif the hoods arrived today so I thought you might like to see the 120 on the dark 7/8ths. A different type of fit to my other hoods but I think it looks pretty dam good! I won't be able to try the 125 until I pull the bird out the moulting pen in a few weeks.
