look dull or sound dull?

If they just look dull then get real and forget about it :yawinkle:

If they sound dull then boil them and then soak them in coca cola overnight before washing and allowing to dry.

If you realy want them clean then boil them in coca cola instead of water :yawinkle:

I have beaten up falcon bells for more than 40 years. Now I make my own bells of brass and/or bronze.

When you need to recondition their appearance, you will find that you can use a number of metal polishes and cleaners available at your helpful hardware store. A little elbow grease and/or a buffing wheel will do the trick. You can also remove the chrome from your Sampos and clips if you are so inclined. Makes a nice change.

When needed, I routinely clean up my bells and swivels in a cartridge casing tumbler for shooters, with walnut chips and NuFinish car polish, (no wax, no ammonia, which weakens the metal). You'll find you have to pick out the walnut chips from inside the bell with the aid of a needle when using this method.

This removes dirt, grime, tarnish, scratches and traces of unwanted solder. Believe it or not, caring for your bells makes them ring better and last longer. A smooth surface and bright clanger does the trick.

A nick is a cutting edge. Who needs a nick?

As Tim says dull in colour or pitch.
If pitch get a pair of long nose plyers and hold bell over a gas flame till you just see them going a dull cherry red. If you do this to much you will melt the solder and ruin the bell. Once achieved correct colour place them on a cold surface and leave. Then polish them with any cleaning products as advised by other people.Dont put them under cold water as this will harden them to quick and will cause cracks in the near future, i have made this mistake in the past, the bells need to be work hardend again that is why good bells get better with age, the sound becomes more solid.
Hope this helps.

Get a small metal container, stick the bells in, pour brasso over the bell, set light to it. Once cool, rub the bell for some mins, using firstly a tooth brush, then a soft cloth.

You will be pleased with the results, well it cleans brass well enough for the Household Cavalry.

I did this with one of my kestrels nobel bells
