Most of my spare time is now upon this new 5 years old painthorse we had from Oklahoma. My goal is to hunt with falcons at "waiting on" with this horse...I'm actually "manning" the young horse to get use to birds and dogs. I'll make a special effort to have it to cope with birds coming to the fist when mounted eventually. An absolute jewel ! In my humble opinion.
Note the colour of the eyes...

A jewel in my opinion too mate! Hidalgo or what?
Very very enviouse of you and the big open spaces you must have to get the best from both Falcon and mount.
I'd love to hear more about your plans for both?

Will do... about the country side; I live in an agricultural area near Quebec city and find my self very lucky to have an access to large open land like that because Quebec mainly is forested Goshawk land ! There is no fence on top of that ! so we're really free to move and follow the flights on horseback especially when the crop season is over.

Okie horse, very cool Dan. She's a tall one. Can't see enough of her, is she Overo, or Tobiano. No fences, sounds like heaven!!
Please keep us posted.
Best Regards, Jeff

Very attractive mare,Are both her eyes wall eyes? I once had a cremello mare with wall eyes... was a skittish creature but as honest as the days long. Good luck with her and keep posting pics of how the 3 of you progress. Kat :yawinkle:

how do you get on with keeping the birds away from hay?
iv been told it would be a very bad idea to have my bop anywere near hay and therfore my horses.

Hi Michack
We have horses but keep all our hay well away from the avairy/weathering ground ,about 100m . Although aspo. spores can travel they haven't caused us any problems . I do know of someone who kept goshawks in the village
who had a tree above his avairy. His birds caught aspo. through the wet leaves that collected close by. Chop tree or move house!

Even my Gyrs in their breeding aviaries close by never seem to bother...good natural ventilation may help.

Will do, me and Wendy will be more active with horses in early summer after the bop breeding season thow. But I'll keep you posted at times, I also have to train a newly arrived tiercel finnish Goshawk for ruffed grouse we have locally.
It's kind of full throttle these days.

Having a horse will add to your daily obligations, today we've done some repair at the falconry school,trained/fly our birds and dog and let horses out in the roundpen for a couple of hrs. Then do the train;feed all bop in aviaries, put litter, food, water to the quails, clean horses and so on...
it has to be a way of life to enjoy and keep going.
Cheers

What a great way to hawk. They used to hawk rooks from horseback, I understand, and very fast it was too, over plenty of country. Hope you inspire others to try this worthwhile long-term project. Got horse and hawks myself, but no time to bring them together!
