Hi All

Here is an example of what can happen if you leave a falcon hooded for prolonged lengths of time in a hood that is too small. Excessive moisture build up has caused matting and infection around the eyes.

Luckily this Gyr/Saker has had lots of TLC and a correctly fitting hood(s) made for him and he is in the best of health.

Its a bit obvious isnt it...... BUT... it still happens! The hood used to cause this problem was one of thos £3 hoods from Pakistan...... maybe paying another three pound for a bigger one was too much trouble?!!

The amazing thing is that this falcon is not hood shy .....

it's pure ignorance. More education is what is needed.

Ok, I agree that it is a crime to have a bird in a hood for excessive time, but as there are many falcon novices on here, instead of just slagging off that one person, why doesnt someone, with a bit of experience, like you Griff, explain how to measure you bird for a hood or find out roughly what size it should be.

I didnt really know util a short time ago, when my mentor and two experienced hood making falconers explained it to meAlthough i am finding it difficult to put inot words.

Hi All

Re Hood measurement comments:

There is one method that I know of...... and that is described by H J Slijper in the Slijpers canon. This method is simply done by measuring the distance between both eye's ... just behind the eye..... as seen below in figure (b)

http://www.m-jhoods.co.uk/images/Slijper/Plates/PlateXXIV.JPG

However..... this only relates to making a Slijper hood..... most hood makers have their own numbering system and therefore if you gave them a measurement of 46mm (average Pere Tiercel) then it would mean nothing to him as he works from his own hood size numbering method (or the block numbers that he makes the hoods from).

From a personal point of view .... before I started making Slijper hoods and understanding the principles therin.... its was all "SWAG" method :)
