Hello everyone. I just wanted to say I will hopefully be a long time member of this forum. I recently left another forum because one of the moderators advised one of the members not to take his red-tail hawk to an avian vet after a severe squirrel bite and trashed me because I told him the bird required avian vet care. The moderator of that page said that squirrel bites do not require vet care and do not get infected! Thankfully the person took the bird to the avian vet and the bite required stitches and the hawk was placed on antibiotics.
Thanks,
Eddie

It's the Apprentice Falconry Forum at: http://apfalconry.proboards19.com/
When that happened I left the forum and sent an email to the owner of the forum and all he had to say was everyone was entitled to their own opinion. which he is right but as the owner of the forum a comment like that has no justification or validity and could kill the bird. I'm known all over the world for my falconry skills and for being open minded in helping anyone that needs advice on training or caring for their bird. When that happened I simply wanted NO part of it.

Hi Eddie,
Welcome back to the forum. I do agree that a severe squirrel bit would require a trip to the vet, not all squirrel bits do. You have to use some common sense in the matter. My better half's Red has been bit 3 times this yr with out going to the vet. The bird is fine. Here is her diary.

That being said there was no excuse for them to trash you for your opinion. Everybody has the right to theirs.
Again welcome back to the forum!:supz:
Have fun,
Greg

I was on there for a very long time. As long as this one; sinces 2004. I just find this forum a bit difficult to navagate but I'll get used to it and I hope falconers here understand the importance of vet care. If raptors didn't need vet care we wouldn't have raptor rehabbers!

I wouldn't worry about him, he is just out of his apprenticeship himself isn't he?

Thanks Greg! I agree with your statement. The debate started when the falconer said the webbing between the toes was completely split open and bleeding. The moderator told him to just leave it alone but when it developed an infection then he should take it in. That is just rediculous. A small bite or scratch is no big deal and even I know that. I've been a falconer for 23 years and flown every species found in Utah. I'm not retarded! LOL But a gashed open, bleeding wound is a serious issue. That moderator told him to tape the toes together or super glue the wound!

I believe he's a 5th year general and claims he works with a vet. I reminded him there is a HUGE difference between a vet and an AAV vet.

If you are talking about the Owner of the site he started that site a couple yrs ago when he first started in Falconry. I don't believe he could have gotten 7 yrs experience in the couple yrs the site has been around.
Not a big deal, you are here now.

The owner has had it a couple of years but the moderator is a 5th year general. The moderator is the one that advised against vet care in raptors and the owner just said he had the right. I'm glad he thinks so but I'll be damned if I would jeopardize my birds health or life!
My little musket had a piece of dried meat that stuck to his talon against the cuticle of the first toe on the left foot. After I took it off it turned red and the next day the foot swelled up. Off to the avain vet he went. The musket developed septicemia causing a severe abcess in his foot and it had to be lanced and drained. A culture was taken and he's on antibiotics and live cultures (to stop a yeast infection from the antibiotic) for 30 days while it heals. He's also on a pain med. According to the retarded moderator on that forum I should have left it alone because rptors don't need vet care and he said antibiotics are unnecessary and dangerous in raptors.
How about your bird getting hit by a car? in your driveway? on a creance? Did you say anything about that? obviously you are not all you think you are. If you feel the need to bash the owner of another site when he was not part of the issue you might want to reconsider your own retarded mistakes.
here is a link for people interested.

How about earlier in the year when you kept the unmanned musket in the pet carrier and it died?

Well, bad news! I went over to Xavier's (the sharp-shin) kennel to get him and he was dead, lying in the back corner. I am going to ask DWR if they will swab him for West Nile Virus and the Asian Bird Flu! This is why I still don't like trapping in Utah....we still have many birds with these diseases and that means I just donated $50 to the State for nothing. I might as well have flushed my money down the toilet. I"m hoping I can get some sparrows this week and I'll just head farther North to trap again. The birds up in the Northern part of Utah seem to be doing fine but down in my area they are dropping dead!
Here is the kennel pic.

i don't want to get in on this cat-fight but just feel I would like the answer to one question that bothers me greatly.
why would anyone be flying their bird on a creance where there is traffic??
surely there is somewhere more approriate than a driveway?
You would think that someone with 24 years of falconry experience would have known better.

This conflict should be addressed by pm...or left behind on the forum where it originated.
It's got no place being dragged on here.....none of us are likely to know the true facts and it isn't our business...is it?
