View Full Version : Fertility in hybrids

I was just reading some older posts in the breeding section and I was wondering about the fertility of hybrids. (just out of interest!)
For example: Gyr/Peregrine, Gyr/Saker, Gyrlins, Perlins, are these fertile or not? I would think Gyr/Sakers are fertile, for them being related, but how about the others?
Does fertility change with every generation? And what is the cause of the infertility, differences in DNA or changes in reproduction tracts?

A lot of the tiercel hybrids are fertile , where as most of the females cant lay eggs , such as the gyr/peregrine, gyr/sakers are closely related and can breed naturally as we know, most peregrine/saker females dont lay but there are exceptions, a good friend of mine had one lay for years he would inseminate but the eggs all though fertile were difficult to hatch. gyr/merlin tiercels can be fertile, as a friend stripped a male and looked at it under the microscope, very fertile, peregrine/prairies dont as a rule lay eggs, but i would think the tiercels would be fertile, mark.

isn't it the rule that most (not all) peregring hybrids are not fertile
but as told above there can be exptions !

Mark,
The tiercels are fertile. I used to make 3/4 prairie 1/4 peales and some pealesxprairie X prairiexshaheens.

do people not think it is time for change? instead of breeding all these hybreds should we not be looking to the future and try and breed more pure birds? there are many pure red naped shaheens for examle in captivity but most of them are used for gyr hybreds? what a waste! they will die out in captivity eventually so come on breeders lets keep thngs pure? then there is the captive peregrine flock? again mostly used for hybred production. but there is seriouse problems with inbreeding so im told. so why dont certin breeders breed more pure peregrines from the good genetic stock that they have available? even if for just a few years to provide some new blood?

Thanks for the replies guys.
@ Barbary Boy, maybe you should start a new thread about breeding pure birds?

If the clock is ticking to stop us flying / breeding hybrids in the UK then i'm sure a lot of falconers will be making the most of the time they have.
You ARE of course right that it would make a LOT of sense for breeders to have stock that will breed pure rather than the mixing of hybrids over and over.

if all the large commercial falcon breeders switched from Gyr semen to peregrine semen overnight, you would be giving tiercels away, and falcons would be back to £500 if your lucky,
