Who vets the purchaser & if so what for?
What do you expect when you selling a bird ?
What do you look for from the purchaser?
What would get your vote of confidence?
What would make you slam the door?
And Finally..................Do you look into a purchaser before a new bird thoroughly?????

What do you expect when you selling a bird ?
I expect the purchaser to be a competant falconer or a trainee with a competant mentor.
What do you look for from the purchaser?
I look for the purchaser to answer my questions correctly in order for me to have confidence in him/her as a purchaser of one of my birds
What would get your vote of confidence?
Someone who could answer my questions correctly without bullsh*tting or quoting something they had read from a book
What would make you slam the door?
Someone who comes dressed up to the nines in falconry outfit or someone who turns up with half a dozen kids, gran and the dog and a carry box made from bits of old timber with screws and splinters.
And Finally..................Do you look into a purchaser before a new bird thoroughly?????
As thoroughly as is possible. i am only human and can be taken in like the rest. All I can do is my best

I've only ever sold one bird of prey in my life, a Harris Hawk I bred last year.

The guy who picked the hawk up was thoroughly checked out, he was a novice, but had plenty of background in field sports, so had the field craft to do is hawk justice.

Had read all the reccommended titles and really done his homework.

I checked out all his equipment, helped him source some of it, giving advice on what i would reccommend and avoid.

Kept intouch with him since, always offering to help with any problems or things he would like me to check, though the offer was never accepted. (I didnt mind that, I wanted to 'do it myself' too)

He's done really well with it taking Rabbits, Pheasant and a couple of Jackdaws.

I'd do the same no matter what species or how many hawks I bred, I was responsible for its creation so I'm responsible to ensure it goes to a suitable home.

totally agree with all of the above! but what boils my **** is the "numerous" people who you have dealt with via the phone, agreed the price, then try and knock you down? after you have fitted "free" anklets jesses swivel, leash, bells and hood? what the **** do they want? it really annoys me when the deal has been done then they give you this *****? and then theres the ones who havent brought a glove or box , so you lend them one and never see it again? people never cease to amaze me??

if the person turned up WITHOUT a box or glove i personally would judge them not suitable to have one of my birds!!!!!! if they cant even get there basics together to acquire a new untrained bird god only knows how well prepared they are at home:rolleyes:

just my opinion!!!!

It,s the same the world over Keith.I personally would never insult a breeder by haggling over the price ,as I know the effort that goes in.
I always take pr-prepared equipment and a selection of hoods , although in your case Keith I would leave the hoods in the house as I know how you have been spoiled in that regard and have seen the quality of hoods you have to hand.:yawinkle:

to me the most important thing is to discuss with the prospective buyer how they are going about transporting the hawk home / fitting eqt etc etc. after all if the hawk is just being cuaght up and put straigh into a box that is fine. we all should turn up with appropriate equipment when purchasing a hawk but we can all forget things at times ( even equipment providers:oops:  ) however if you breeders want a few gloves swivels, leashes etc I can do an extremely good deal if its within the next couple of weeks:yawinkle: . The really important thing is if you have left a piece of equipment behind , and you either need to borrow/ buy from the breeder , either pay for it there and then , dont expect a freebie from the breeder . if you need to borrow it send it back recorded delivery the following day. surely this is basic etiquete. I have never sold a BOP, but I've put a few hundred snakes into the UK. I give all the correct information regarding temperature, humidity and feeding requirements to everybody who buys a snake from me. I answer any questions and then allow them to phone me if they have any problems at a later date. However once the money is in my hand and the snake is in theirs then they have the responsibility for the welfare of the animal.
