View Full Version : The sound of bells

Up until this year I have generally used lahore bells, as I found that the lower tone suited my hearing.
This year I have had a set of Hungarian bells with a nice low tone and a set of Noble bells.
About 10 years ago I got my first 'hearing' of Noble bells at the falconers fair, and I didnt like them, they seemed too high pitched and 'tinkly' for me. I went back to Lahore until now.
But my current set are fine for my hearing. So a question here to those of you who have used nobles for some time, has the tone changed?
If not, I suspect I need to get my ears syringed

The first set of nobel bells that I ever heard made me think they were amazing, I bought a pair and used them on my saker way back in '95, ever since then I have used nobels, I used to use lahores but think that they are a waste of money now. They only last a season and the tone gets worse the longer that you use them until they become what I call 'stealth bells'.
With nobels the tone seems to improve over time, and for me this is a good thing.
I have a nobel bell on my harris that has been on him since about 2000, and is still as good as ever, I would have needed atleast 6 lahore bells to last this long.
As for the change in tone, perhaps the first nobels that you heard were of a different size than what you are currently using, this alters tone, but every bell sounds different, this cannot be helped, even with bells of the same size and in matched sets the tone will be different, but I like this also, as when flying a cast of birds you can tell who is where.
I like the size 0s, they are tiny (smaller than cat bells) weigh only 3g and can be used on all sizes of hawks, they make great tailbells as when plectrum mounted with a tail mount they reduce the overall weight by about 10grammes.

I suffered from a perforated ear drum and an infection as a child and as a result have reduced hearing in one ear. Its not a problem in normal circumstances, but makes a great difference when it comes to tone - hence the problem with high tones.
Whilst Lahores are only suitable for 1 season (max!) they did provide the tone I could best hear, no matter what size they were.
It just seems to me that the tone of all 'western' bells has changed over the years from a higher pitch to a lower one. Although I may just have been lucky with what I have bought recently.
Does anyone prefer a higher pitch?

I too have inner ear problems, But I think this was due to listening to loud music at raves in my youth. I definatly prefer a lower tone, not because I can hear it better, but because it is less intrusive whilst flying.

Julian - I believe they are a size 5. They are brass/bronze coloured ones. I dont go in for the large bird/large bell syndrome

With it being a problem with one ear, I find I have problems identifying where higher pitches come from.

FHF I had both ear drum,s bugerd up while in the guards and have the same prob hence the hearing aids, what a diff thay make and you have them ajusted to your hearing loss so works grate

Yup nice tone Hattie, however On my falcons I am using either 1's or even 0's so perhaps that is taking things to extremes, but like you, I dont go in for the large bird/large bell syndrome

Hi Hattie
I have a similar problem....... I use Andy Peels bells...... and I find that their tone is better for hearing. Nobles are great but very high pitch for my hearing.
Andy should be back in production soon....... SLR, SA80 and Rarden Canon tends to knacker hearing (even with plugs)

I hope to get the chance to hear his bells soon. No offence to our Colonial cousins but I would prefer to purchase in the EU!

I've used Nobels bells and all the pairs that I have bought, all have 1 at a higher pitch than the other one.
I've noticed over the seasons, that they mellow down a little but I can hear them on the Saker sometimes long before I see her:supz: I use no. 5's

Hi Hattie
you may remember, I have always used noble bells as I prefer the tinkle rather than the dull sounding lahore..I do not think this has changed at all...I bought 2 pairs of velarde of Doug Pineo at the ff last year...not in the same league as noble in my opinion..they are still in the drawer and I used a pair of nobles this season what I already had..
While I can hear the noble bells very well..I have difficulty sometimes with directionality especially in the woods..but I hear them a mile off..I guess its just what suits us..but the nobles are just the same as always..and will always be my personal first choice..

Hi Frankie - I have had a look on the net and it appears that there are 2 types of Noble, brass/nickel and brass/bronze - the brass/bronze having a lower tone.
It may be that in the past I have only heard the brass/nickel ones - hence me thinking they were 'tinkly'
