I'm considering getting an incubator. I've got my eye on the Brinsea Octagon Pro 20 DX. Anyone use one of these? What do you think of it? Are there others you'd reccommend?
Also, I just ordered a Brinsea "Cool lume" candler. Anyone use them? What's your opinion of it?

Used one for the last two years with Harris Hawk eggs, did the trick. All fertile eggs hatched.
Dont forget you'll need a hatcher and brooder too. I used the Hatchmaker. It needs to be still air for hatching.

I have great sucess with the Brinsea but the room must be stable, and the turning could be better. What about trying a R-Com?

I'v had sucses in the past with goshawks eggs ,but as stated earlier you need to give eggs extra turns in the first ten days

I'm just having a read on the Brinsea website, do you know if the humidity is controlled from a separate unit like with the Octagon or is it all done in the one unit ?

Looks like it's in the same unit.

Well 2 things that Falconquester as mentioned...
1) Turning of the eggs, which can be a bit jerky in the octagon if you don't pack them in tight enough and sometimes with the dividers they can be a bit tight or a bit loose and i know you can get round this like i have done with medical padded tape..
2) Room temperature stability which can be a problem sometimes,i've heard the R-com can be put next to a radiator and still hold its temperature..
Maybe Falconquester, who as had the R-com on test and as been using Octagons alot longer than i have can answer anymore questions

That's a possibility, Colin. I'd like to hear from some more people that have used them though. So far, you are the only person I've heard from that has tried them.

Check out my short report on Rcom 20 Pro USB incubators http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=26163
Cool lume is fine but be careful as they get hot and damage eggs better with a Maglite 2 cell pencil torch will see through most Falcon eggs and will do Harris eggs from about 10 to 12 days in a dark room

Did you have your birds sit them before you put them in the incubator ?
Or did you incubate them from day one ???

I have used forced air incubators for hatching since the mid eighty's with no problems so it could provide more choice of incubators/ hatchers for him.

Do you never get problems with the membrane drying?

i allso have used a turn x incubater to hatch common kestrels, american kestrels spars, hh ,and feruginous, with no problem of there membrain drying out.also there were all hatched using a incubater dry .except when they just pipped
i just allow a small amount of water in the reseviers in the turn x incubater.
i usaly put the piped eggs in a small wire basket sort of thing.
in the incubater to stop them turning and some times put a small peace of carboard over the egg in the little basket to shelter. them from the direct draft of the incubaters fan.
it seems to work for me ive had good hatch rates.
ppl might think wtf are you doing but as i said why change it as it working ok up till now.

No. I use Turn-x incubators and flood the middle segments. I have tried flooding more segments but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Maybe the Turn-X is the way for Jimmy to go then, I've personally seen that the membrane dries with the Oct 20.

Yes, I let the birds sit them for 10 days then pulled them, hatched them and put the chicks back at 8 days old.

Well I use 2 incubators, one is run dry the other at a controlled humidity hence the humidifier.
