Depends what you want it for,do you want it for your own use or to make money from in pubs and clubs.

Get a TDi rather than a TD5. Easier to maintain and you dont need a laptop to change the oil:wink:

Murph, I think the new tax levels will affect models from 2001 onwards.
I've had a 300tdi for two years taking the mileage up from 80-110k, it has cost me around £1500 in that time and now the gearbox synchro is going:cry: Shop around and go for best you can afford preferably with FSH.
Despite the problems I've had I'm getting another 300tdi when this one goes as I do like them, and find them good for my needs, ie transporting birds, dogs, ferrets etc.

I’ve had 3 models of Discovery 200, 300 and now TD5……Look after them with regular servicing and they don’t very often let you down.

My brother has a 4 year old one for sale its a sack of cack! pretty much every major component has failed since he got it. The latest thing to go wrong was it getting totally disabled when a small leak in the windscreen rubber cause the elecrics to fail. I had the misfortune of two freelanders the only good thing they were supplied by work on contract hire. The first one went back to the dealer so many times even they got sick of seeing it the second one - replacement for the first wasn't much better.

proper landrovers like the defender is a different thing altogether - I think this pedigree is what the dealers try to make the disco out to be

all the best,

Mark.

so what is the best 4X4 to go for?

Bought a Landrover Defender 110 CSW for last season as my missus was sick and tired of finding blood etc in the back of her Range Rover Monday morning at school.

Fitted some decent tyres and then had to uprate the springs for better clearance. Car goes anywhere, carries three/four bird boxes, ferrets other kit with room to spare. Also, has twelve seats and does a great job of ferrying drunks on pub crawls and loads of kids to football.

Easy to service and a classic country vehicle. I don't think you can go wrong as they really hold their value. High milage is not a problem for these babies.

I can't rate them highly enough!

I've been looking for a 300tdi Discovery and have looked at quite a few now, common thing with them seems to be rusting under the wheel arches! Cambelts need replacing at 60,000 miles, engines i'm told on them go on for ages and ages if probably looked after and maintained. There lovely vehicles, is just finding a decent one that's been well looked after. However, I'm being swayed more towards a defender 90.

Shoguns are great motors, had one for 3 years, no prob whatsoever. I now have a jap import Toyota Surf, thats just as good. Itll **** all over a disco for comfort, reliabilty and space inside. If you fold the seats down in the back, you can get a double bed in it!! (no wise cracks please)

So.....if your gonna disco dance, make sure you do it to "im turning japanese, i think im turning japanese, i really think so, do do de doo dah dah!"

i think you could be wrong there mate KFC+ has a f reg landrover and he is fumming that he has to pay a fortune extra on the tax which he only uses at the wkends

the goverment has come up with this new money making idea so i would have thought all 4+4s will have to pay they cant just ROB half the 4+4 drivers all will get nailed

i hope me and him are wrong though pal

with the early ones i know they had a prob with the diffs on the rear they have plastic parts inside what deteriate and wear out and they are big £££

only trying to help pal..ian

hello Murph

get a discovery mate tdi...I just happen to have one here..r reg 1997..high miles 110k but sound tidy and reliable..full years mot..£3600 and cheap at the price..poor economy though at 28 - 30 mpg..

Re the surf..I had one 2 year ago..a lovely motor full electrics but an automatic and an outright fuel giuzzler..p""s poor economy 20 - 22 mpg..

all the best whatever you buy mate..

Hey Murph, I have worked on all landrovers, from the range rover sport to a v8 defender as i used to work at a corporate off road driving center. And to be honest i would spend my money on a defender rather than a disco. I know a defender is not exactly supreme comfort, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. For the money you are looking to spend you will get a solid enough machine.

Also 2 replys to your question are very good points as well. 1- Ebay is a great place to look for vehicles but remember if you look at one it's worth getting an AA/RAC vehicle check as you have a come back on any fault on the vehicle. 2- Jap imports are very reliable, and with the amount of people in this business now a days you have a great choice of dealers to choose from. The reason i mention this is i have had a surf and family members have always had shoguns etc.

As they say on blind date my friend.- THE DECISION IS YOURS!!!!

Regards Cameron.

As it stands only new 4x4s will be getting done for tax! as fare as im aware. I have been allowed to have a 90 by the wife! as long as its one of those 6 seaters should the other one have any probs! so happy days!

Ive looked on ebay and there seems to be some good deals on there ! far better than auto trader! i think people must be not useing like they used to! so anyone know any 90 dealers?
