Make a base from a large plant pot holder, obtain from local supplies a flexible shatterproof plastic, bend it and join. Job done.

Just out of interest what sort of depth tank do people use for spars? Is there any set measurements or just common sense ie. deeper than the adult bird?!
Talon

deep enough so the young bird carnt squirt its **** over the top.
you can get a rough idear of the hight by compairing it to the dog stood next to it. in the picture outflying has posted up.
but it depends on what bird your imprinting.?

spar's slice the furtherest :D , the tank was about 20" high. Once standing, they will nearly reach the top with their slice.

what have you joined it with, it looks like pop rivets - is that at correct?
A word of warning!. Do not place any Perspex or clear plastic tanks in direct sunlight with a hawk in them, the temp shoots up so much had a mate loose a merlin chick when he left it out side for only a short period of time. Alf.

That one was made by Blackbird, it was riveted.
The one I made and loaned out (never returned) was bolted together and could be flat packed when not required.

cardboard boxes are briliant for falcons. use newspaper taped to the sides for easy cleaning. when imprinting more then one bird the clear tanks are a prolem as the birds see each other. did about 10 imprint falcons last year with the boxes lawnmowers come in, worked well. but for gos and co the clear ones seam to be good, as long as you got only one bird.
good luck to everyone who gets a new imprint this year.

Coated, copper pop rivets, Washers on each rivet to spread the load.

do you cut 'windows' otherwise, how do the birds see out?

you use a biggish card board box cut the front out like a widow as you said then tape a large square peace of perspec so it looks like a tv lol but only one channel.spars.:yawinkle:
then when the box is dirty just take the perspec of and do the same with a new box.hope all that makes sense.
you can tape plastick to the sides of the box so you dont have to change boxes as regular just wipe them down but thats its up to you.as i prefer just using a new box as there easy
enough to come by.

thanks, I might just try that, depends how many I will be imprinting. if it is only one I will probably go down the perspex route, if it is more than one I can use the boxes and turn the windows so they can't see each other. I had a hawk break a leg many, many moons ago and he had to have it pinned. wasn't allowed back in aviary as he wasn't to jump onto perch so he had to be in a box like that for 6 weeks. He watched tv, loved the cartoons best:lol:

you can use the windows or leave the top open and out the box on the floor in the livingroom or kitchen. depeding where you are most of the time. once the birds are big enough to jump out of the box they are big enough for puting the jessies on. some birds will spend all day trying to get out of the box and then they will run in a corner and look at the wall.

your joking.? its what your right arms for lol
Personally for imprinting I like a hawk at least waste height I don’t think young hawks, like most hawks like being on the ground.
Again boxes even with windows don’t give panoramic views of your approach or other stimuli going on around them.
Cheers mate. Alf.

you can allways put three windows on the box then place on a table.
as it save trying to bend perspex into a circule wich i tried and shatered it. and its very costly stuff i know a propper imprint tanks better.but the perspexs needs to be
heated to take the memery out of it.so that it can be bent safely.
allso using boxes is ok if your imprinting a couple of birds.

I had a price for an imprint tube of £45 for 24" diameter & 24"high. Is this a good price?
You could do mate but chances are that the hawk if it’s an accipiter will hit out through your window every time. These ****ers know the weak spots and **** will abound. :yawinkle: Alf.

Bought a second hand half and half hamster cadge, half coloured plastic on the bottom clear on top. It’s the best imprint tank I have owned the shape of the top is curved in slightly and it catches every mute. I will post a picture of it tomorrow raised loads of chicks in it. Alf

I have to go with Tim on this one. Clear Sterilite tubs, shatter proof, easy to clean, handles for carying, lids for when you're taking the box from the house to the car in case of rain, and they are cheap. I always use two so I always have a clean box to transfer the bird into.
Set em on a table or dresser, plug in some action adventure movies to get em worked up, or your favorite Steve Chindgren or Nick Fox DVD if you want them to learn something.
Raised a bunch of birds in them. Works pretty good.

Cardboard box's give rise to fears as the imprinter is seen to be constantly towering over the eyass whenever he is in its view.
Its simple really
