Discovery, a lot of 4x4 for the money and most have been used as shopping trolleys. Check everything works and you aint going to go far wrong. Far better than trying to sit kids on those uncompfortable rear seats in a crew cab.

i had a nissan terrano for a couple of years, 7 seater, but if you fold the back 2 seats down you still have loads of room and 5 seats, so you have the double option, or if you want the two seats you could carry a kennel? they arnt to pricey and have a extra low 4 wheel drive for any real problem areas, big comfy cars, more so than crew cabs...colin

Buy 4x4 magazine and have a look in there, they do test drives and comparisons on all makes. I think for a pick up the Nissan Navara is tops and for a normal 4x4 the Nissan x trail is highly rated, this is what i read last time i bought the magazine about 6 months ago.

But £5000 won't buy any of these, Nissan Terrano will

I was thinking of selling mine Range Rover HSE 4.6 a while back...it's probably the most juicy motor around and therefore now pretty cheap.

Mine is a P REG only 70,000 on the clock. around 45k new (i bought for 10k 3 years ago..now worth 6,500 at the most...a lot of car for the money!

I'm probably keeping mine now ...I just can't bring myself to sell.

A diesel would be your best bet I reckon!

It’s a difficult choice……
I have always had a Discovery because like you it’s used for everything, the Discovery TD5 is a brilliant all-rounder if serviced regular, mine was an ex-demo with 4000 miles on the clock when I got it……had it quite a few years now and its done 116000 trouble free miles…Its on a T plate.
I keep threatening to trade it in and get a new one but I would only buy the same thing just newer so can’t see the point.

The Insurance for me is under £200 fully comp and it’s pretty good on diesel……
I would be looking at spending in the region of about £8000 for a nice used one.
The main draw back is the smell, I don’t notice it anymore but apparently it smells really bad inside of dead and rotting stuff…..
The smell was so bad that the wife made me buy her a ford focus so she dosent have to go near it anymore.....

The warrior and 4x4`s like that with the crew cab and separate back are ideal to beat the smell but you don’t get that much room for the rear passengers legs…..I had a look round them not long ago and found the Isuzu one had the best rear leg room.

I would think about a TD freelander. Will do everything you want and in your price range.

Stay clear of the 1.8 petrol the heads go.

Hi Hound how you doing? , i have had lots over the years, no worse than any other diesel 4x4 , not like running a car, mines a 2.5 turbodiesel, not a racing car but very practical, got good tyres and it gets me were i need to go, mark.

I think its like every other vehicle, some people can be very unlucky, Like Neil says the 3 is better than the 2.4. I would go with a commercial 110 defender, with vynal seats. Just wipe everything clean which cuts down on the smell. I say this even though mines been in the garage 3 times this year with engine management problems.
£ daughters plenty of space away from each other, only thing is they have too shout their bitchyness a bit louder:roll:

Anyone with the money too get a 110 now, I think will be quids in later on with the new one coming out. Dealers say they are becoming a rare second hand item.

replacement parts are horrendous .
no such thing as a small bill .
but i wouldnt have anything else at this moment in time .
treated purely as a work vehicle and cleaned out when i cant fit anything else in .
then i seem to find things i've "lost" previously.
first had a classic .
now running a p38.
both v8's on gas .
when the sport has come down in price (by a lot) i will have one of those .:supz:
once they have bitten you there is no escape .

was in a diesel sport a few weeks ago .
it went like the veritable ****e off a shovel .
acceleration was phenomenal for a diesel considering the body has the aerodynamics of a breeze block.
very smooth (as rangies are) and ultra quiet for a diesel .
big joe will verify this......it was craig the human j.c.b.'s motor .
went home with very green eyes .

Hound mate,

if your looking for a cheap 4x 4 that will do the shopping run as well as the hawking wagon job then if you can find a Vauxhall Frontera 2.5td or 2.8td in estate, they are great, just make sure you check the electrics and for corrosion under the doors. They are easy enough to maintain yourself. The engines are bombproof, the 2.5 is a BMW and the 2.8 is an Isuzu number, both will go on for ever and a day. They are veryhard to come by as no one wants to sell theres.:supz:

Othjer than that I would rocommmend a Rover of some sort land or range.

Loads of folk have told me how good the Hilux is, and yes they are indestructable, as tested by rhinos and Lions at work, as well as Top Gear, but there weekness has to be....going off road, anything worse than wet grass and my 106 can do better.
