Hi Keith,
The only suppliment need if at all, is a pro-biotic, Nick Fox, advises dabbing the the chicks first meal in a pro-biotic to kick start the chicks digestive system, (with Artificial incubation obviously) no other suppliments required other than a good diet.

Steve.

dont need additives, just spend a fortune on getting the best live foods out there, neck it seconds before preparing it for chicks, nothing makes up for lack of a good diet imo.

you need the best diet for young chicks but no matter how fresh and how good the diet ,it is always a bonus to introduce extra good gut flora to get their system off to a good start.

Pro-Biotic is the only thing to give newly hatched chicks as they normally get this bacteria from the adult when the chewed up meat is re-gurgitated. Weve found the Vetark Avi-pro substitute to be a good probiotic.

how come you do not trust it. I know that nick fox, mark robb and terry all use fresh quial from the same source and do not have any problems. and they would not risk a full years wages by useing bad food.
what birds do you breed.

i always give quail when the young hatch as there is plenty of good meat on the breast for the parents to rip off and feed

I always feed Nutrobal from day 3. Above is a prime example where people think using Rat or Quail is a good diet - it's not!! A varied diet is a good diet.
I (and a few others) one year fed almost exclusively Rat and ended up with a large proportion of birds with ricketts (spelling?). There was a problem with the Rats Phosphorus levels (Lab tests done on the food) and the birds were unable to use the calcium.
A good varied diet is the way to go but not always practicle so because of this to cover any unknown problems with the food I always suppliment.
BE WARNED!!!!
Cheers

I also use nutrobal with a good probiotic with rat/rabbit. I do feed quail but not for the first 2 weeks and never had any problems

Sorry, I thought you meant (like most of the other posts here) that you only used a probiotic and not any other suppliment.
Cheers

Bit late reading this thread - I have always used A1 Raptor supplements. Raised and imprinted a kestrel from 8 days and Sakeret from 2 weeks on the young and growing mixes. Always add the moulting mix in the summer and fly during the season with the odd supplementation of the regular compound depending on what fresh quarry is being fed. It's worked really well for me.

Forgot to add - also probiotic - more often to the youngsters and occasionally to the older birds.

Good advice Andy.I clicked on your rep points but was told " I must spread some rep points around before giving you points again" !
We use a touch of probiotic on Day 1 then Vetark Avimix (for the nutrobal) with each meal.
As you say - the problem with even a "good diet" is that the rats, etc are only as good as the food they have been reared on.

thankyou for your reply on this subject, they were most informative, i have ordered some pro-biotic from tony at interhatch, i will only be hand rearing for a few days then putting the eyasses back with the parents(if i get any that is!) during that time they will be given a varied quality diet.
