Just interested in people's different methods of fitting leg bells.

Cheers

I put a very small hole in the anklet top and pass a very small cable tie through it and the bell and attach. Never any probs, just make sure the cable tie is as tight as possible to reduce any chance of it snagging. It's never happened to me but you never know.

Yep know what you mean, personally I've had birds pick at the cable tie as the bell seems to be more of a target when fitted like this.

On the HH I had what reads as the same system as Colin. But when I get the gos, I'm thinking the leather bewit.

col is,nt that the prfered method for owls and hairy legs ect, i use a method from M.Holinshead book, basicaly a normal bewit fastened to the bell, wraped arround the birds leg, measured, punched cut off and tied on with a cable tie the bell stays where it should be for a full season, on the leg not hanging over the anklet.

I will try and get a pic for you, mine doesn't hang over the anklet, if the tie is tied tight enough it hangs outwards

soz col, i know the method you're talking about, i wasnt implying that it did, i was aiming at the normal bewit after stretching ect, it's hard texting and getting the correct point over aint it!

The traditional leather bewit system with two cable tie heads together as the final fixing seems to work best for me. Have been using cable tie inside plastic tube more recently, my thinking is that this system will be more robust.

I must admit I prefer to use tail mounted bells (and telemetry) to minimise the clutter around the legs especially for hard striking birds. I just worry about possible bruising that can occur from a bell on one leg clanking against the other leg when striking or grabbing the quarry.

All the best

Mark.

I agree, the best place for a bell is the tail, but my tiercel seems to a problem with them. In his first year he threw the deck out it was fitted too, he's in his fourth season now and has been wearing leg bells since then.

i agree the tail is the best place for the bell ,best advantage is it does`nt get muffled in long grass however my male harris pulls his deck feathers out if i mount a bell there so have to use a leg mount ie hole punched in anklet and bell secured with small cable tie.
