View Full Version : COBRA "Arab"

Hi All

Just finished a rufter Arab pattern for the COBRA block....... this is straight from the block and in its prototype form ..... I have just fitted it and done all the usual tests and all seems to be good.

The back of the hood has a short closing point but the correct appeture to just slot onto the head (eliminating over extension).... so limiting "closing Shock" from a long draw hood (if that makes sense) :D

The nature of the pattern allows for "glueing" .....therefore making this pattern less time consuming and an economic working hood..... pics to follow shortly :D

as a prototype very hard to fault.
front end looks very tidy, gape, eyepace etc. the close looks very neat too,

just wondering tho, from the last pictures do you think the braces sit a insy winsy bit too high? and don't close under the skull? i.e the neck could be longer??
obviously just passing comment and not seen it on the bird, i'm only going from the pic and trying to be constructive.

kindest regards
D.

and yes will order that f lugger of you next week i promise. my bad.

Hi AD

Yes its a "gnats" high but not by much...... the hood wont "pull off" (part of the test).... but I would like it a little lower.... I have already altered the pattern to adjust :D

Ok on the Lugger..... let me know what colours etc.

Hi Lee

The front of the hood is the same as the normal COBRA hood...... as its blocked on the COBRA Block.... I didnt take a photo of the front of the hood 'cos of the relevant stuff at the back of it

Cool hood Griff... I like it!

How much for a glued, low-budget field hood for a Harris hawk? I need a good hood for my mate's male in the near future.

Cheers,
/Magnus

PS. B.t.w., have you ever made a scaled down slip-on hood (i.e. no braces) for a Harris hawk? Thing is, my mate has been having some troubles with his joints lately, so I am trying to think of some easier-to-handle alternatives to traditional hoods, tethering set-ups, etc, that doesn't tax his manual dexterity too much. Advice gratefully recieved!

Hi Guys

Just let me sort the pattern out and get a couple done and I will let you know.... I have just made another for a Gyr/Pere falcon that will be fitted tonight..... so I can see if my adjustments are ok...... once I have done that I can create a pattern range and away we go :D

Another good fit, Looks more finished with that top knot Griff.

I like how you have trimmed the ends too, nice touch 8-)

Cant see from the pics, have you done away with the rolled edge?

Hi Tim

The Tiercel hood was a prototype... and just quickly sewn together. This second hood on the Gyr/Pere falcon is a more finished hood ....using the flesh side as the outer..... this is hood will be used in the Gulf so the flesh side will take the sand etc. I am making this hood in this way for practical reasons and it will be a straight forward working hood.

Thank you so much Griff, that would be fabulous! The idea just came to me when I read one of your threads recently, and saw that you had made a series of progressively smaller slip-on hoods for a female Golden, a male Golden & a Ferruginous, if I remember correctly.

I've managed to collect quite a few hood patterns, incl. some eagle ones, but only in the Anglo-Indian & Afghan styles - no proper slip-on, brace-less ones. And even if I did, I don't think I'd know what size to use for a male Harris anyway! I'm guessing a proper slip-on hood could benefit from some blocking too. If so, that would also be problem for me since I don't have any hood blocks yet. But if you succeed in resizing a pattern adequately, I'm sure I could do the stitching myself and mould it to the best of my ability. I've made some Anglo-Indians and a few Nick Fox hoods with hidden stitching, so I'm reasonably confident in that department at least. If you prefer to make the test version yourself, I fully understand, but in that case you should probably hold on to it for a while since I'm on a pretty tight budget right now... Hope you understand.

Cheers,
/Magnus

Pattern Update:

One more modification to the pattern is needed..... there is a bit of "Forward & Backward" movement in the hood...... not much..... but enough to make it come over the nostril slightly....... so I will adjust to compensate for this before I start selling this hood..... couple more days of testing until I am happy with it :D

Update:

No Pattern Adjustment needed....... just a repostioning of the Brace anchors has sorted the problem http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Wow - you can really see the difference that seemingly tiny change did to the fit if you compare the two side views.
The shape is lovely, I really like the way it follows the head shape in the back, not to mention the fit around the cere/gape.
Top bombing!

Griff,

How do the American-Pro braces differ from other nylon braces?

Extra bit of padding in them and a bit of stretch in them for a good "lock", I have called them "American Pro".... 'cos they are made by an American Pro brace maker :D Excellent, hard wearing, long lasting nylon braces. I have been using the larger style in my Eagle hoods..... and the Eaglemen on this forum will vouch for their durability.
