Pattern Update:
One more modification to the pattern is needed..... there is a bit of "Forward & Backward" movement in the hood...... not much..... but enough to make it come over the nostril slightly....... so I will adjust to compensate for this before I start selling this hood..... couple more days of testing until I am happy with it :D

Hi Griff, hood arrived a short while ago. Many thanks. You sent a 120 not the 117 but it seems fine. It will probably fit Zarbu as well.
Just took a few quickies; Bob has just eaten so not brill but you will get the idea of fit before I take some good ones :super:

Hi Clive..... excellent looks fine to me :D I sent a size 120 'cos that is 52mm...... a 117 = 50mm. I think I need to just increase the angle at the corners of the gape a touch .... but the fits seems to be fine.
Did it just slip over the head or was there a slight squeeze to get it on?
On the next pics can you sweep back the top knot strands .... looks a bit odd with them stuck up in the air like that....
Bobs a bit "browner" than the other picture?

Hi griff, that is Bob, not tried it Zarbu yet.
It slipped straight on, then I jiggled it towards the back of the head a touch and struck the braces. I haven't even wetted it in yet.
Now that Zarb's finished her quail and 2 docs. I will go down and try it on her, then post up another:supz:

Hi Clive.... you should not need to wet the hood ......... the hood should just slot into place :D

Ok thanks; here's Zarbu with it on......................................you should be able to see the difference as she has the 'spots' on her bib where as Bob is plain.

As always, the hoods are the 'dogs-danglies' and I'll get some decent pics. soon:supz:

hi griff, recieved the hoods today,
pretty impressed,
if i was being picky!!!, and believe me i can't do better! (those that can't teach and all that) i'd say:-
i) gape corners on the two (and also the red'n) are two low.
ii) bottom of the mouth piece could be curved to give it a tighter snug fit and a thicker chin strap.
iii) curved mouth piece to pinch the nose together as it leaks light from just under the cere. and both birds could see movement.
asides from that; IMO, they are ABSOLUTELY FAULTLESS arount the back, where the braces sit, and pull up very neatly. in terms of front to back movement as discussed i think adjustment to the mouth piece shape will sort that.
The Hoods are amazingly spacious around the eyes, really needs to be seen to be believed quite how much space the cobra affords the hawk, especially the googly eyed, lugger!. IMO THE most spacious looking and comfy hood i've seen.
in summary they pull up very well, and the shape of the hood is amazing, stiching is unasailable, just a few alterations to the shape and location of the mouth piece and i think this hood is unbeatable for shape and comfort.
But thats what these tests are for!, universal testing!
a great product nearly there!
rep added griff!!:supz:

Hi Dave
Top feed back !! Many thanks.....
Gape:
Noted and already adjusted :D Because this hood has no sewn in throat strap the bottom of the hood is less stiff and therefore loses retention on the block.... hence the corners of the gape collapsing over the soft parts of the gape. The pattern adjustment I have just done will eliminate that and fit correctly from now on.
Hood:
I think I can safely say there is no danger of eye problems with the amount of space the hood gives .... and the deepest part is directly over the eye.... with a slightly raised orbital brow clearance as well. Casting depth and width is not an issue either :D

Yes mate, I prefer hoods with 'more' eye space; that way if a hood is not slightly the right size (on the smaller side) then there is no way the eyes will rub the inside:supz:.
Is the 'finish' just for the 'freebie-prototypes' or will you be using the chromed hide for the production models. I quite like this finish as when used for everyday use it looks more of a field hood:wink:
The outer seem is almost invisible, very impressive. I must agree with Dave, the chin strap could do with being about 3mm wider but as my pics show, mine fits both birds beatifully.

kind of what i mean, to me the mouth opening is too triangular.
other then that FAULTLESS.
VERY good.

Hi Clive
Many thanks ....
The "Arabian COBRA" will be made exactly like that ...... its more practical I think. To clean it... get yourself a "suede brush" from your local shoe store and that will bring it up nicley (also hide the seam a bit more as well).
Chin Strap:
I have made a thinner chin strap on the "Arabian" becuase the neck appeture is slightly smaller on this hood than the normal COBRA Dutch version. I will look at widening it a touch..... but I beleive its about right :D
GriffMJ
25-05-2007, 06:27 PM
Hi Dave.... all done :D I wont put in the flaps at the "nares"...... but have just tucked it in slightly to follow the contour..... the corner gape adjustment is done.
This has only happened because of the soft neck line..... as you can see below.... the normal Dutch version with a sewn in throat strap keeps the shape better ..... therefore the gape does not deform.

Hi all,
Just wanted to say how great it is to see falconers really trying to do their very best to make their falcons as comfortable as possible. Love the pics too!
Likewise, imaginary rep points added to you Griff, for doing such extensive & informal/"open" field testing of this brilliant new hood model of yours. You're really setting an example that is hard to beat in my opinion! :supz:
Cheers,
/Magnus
