Ms Havoc is a twelve year old NA goshawk. She's been laying eggs for about 8 years now, but this is the first time we've had semen available for her. The first egg hatched three days ago, and the second one this morning. The third one has pipped, and the fourth wasn't laid until four days after the third, so it probably won't pip until Monday or Tuesday.

 Well, I certainly don't have it all figured out, but I'm sure we will still be trying to maintain for at least the next couple years! You're not ready for a third bird???

I turned my red-tail (Addie) loose on Thursday. It is strange to not hear those bells out in the back yard. Down to just the coops, 14 Coturnix Quail, 5 breeding pairs of gerbils and my doberman! Awful quiet at my house! Hurry up September, can't wait to trap again! LOL

Thanks Tasha and Brad and everyone else! And number three joined us this morning after many hours of me thinking there MUST be something wrong..... And Desire's first pipped egg is still just sitting there doing nothing! It's now been 24 hours since it pipped, though, so it should start working it's way out soon.

Beautiful Richard!
Number four hatched out this morning at about 11:20 MDT. It took 49 hours from pip to hatch, which is the longest so far. First was shortest time at 33 hours. And we now have one of Desire's and one of Ms Havoc's that are pipped.
I also gave one of the chicks back to Ms Havoc. We had fed it before taking it out, and I gave Ms Havoc her ration before I took the chick out. I put the chick in the nest without her noticing, but it got uncomfortable and peeped a bit. Ms Havoc turned and looked at me and the nest, gathered the rest of her food up and brought it to the nest. As soon as she landed on the edge of the nest the chick stood up and started begging, and Ms Havoc started tearing off tiny little pieces, soaking them in saliva, and then offering them to the baby. It was SO fantastic! She fed it about as much again as what Becky had already fed it before I took it out; and it had stopped begging and laid down when Becky had stopped feeding it. Ms Havoc is now covering the chick along with her two dummy eggs and proud as punch! :D
Here are some pics of number four. I'll send some of Ms Havoc in a few minutes.

Thanks! And the prey species are good ones in most places, but it will depend on who gets them and where they live. Our tiercels are fairly small and great for quail and partridge, magpies, crows and smaller species. Most can also handle bunnies pretty well. The females are a bit small at ~850 grams, but can still handle black-tailed jacks along with bunnies, pheasants and ducks.

We got the results back on the first four eggs we sent in; one female and three males. We still have to send in Ms Havoc's last egg and Desire's other three. We'll probably get those in the mail on Sunday if the last egg hatches early enough.

Red is going to be Becky's falconry bird, so she wanted her brought in where she can start working with her. I removed Red from the chamber with Ms Havoc yesterday and replaced her with Black and Purple. Here's a picture of the basket I used to do the deed.
Ms Havoc cackled at me when I took it into the chamber, because she does not like anything but food brought in. I just set it down under the nest and
gave her some food, though, and all was well.
I let her feed Red pretty well and put Black into the nest with her. She immediately checked out the new baby and fed him a few bites, and I placed Purple into the nest. While she was checking him out, I removed Red and put her into the basket and closed the lid. I then helped feed the other two for a while and left with my booty.
Black and Purple had both been fed quite a bit before going into the
basket, so they remained quiet until I opened the lid. Then Red had eaten
quite a bit before I placed her into the basket, so she remained quiet while
I snuck her out the door. The big problem comes when there is only one baby in the chamber and I need to remove it; best done in the dark.....

well done richard and becky,
your posts have been most encouraging as im just going down this route for my first time myself, you mention different colours red black purple, i take it you are marking the eyasses in some way to identify each bird for sampling? are these the colour of their rings or are you using a marker? what marker are you using?
keep the progress reports coming and the pics too they are super to see.

Hi Keith,
Yes, the colors refer to markings on the chicks and eggs so we can tell which chick goes with which egg for sexing; makes it easier to put the correct sized band on and you know sooner what you have available to sell or give.
We use the permanent Sharpie wide markers. Don't use red, though, because the adults and the siblings will peck at it. Red's marking faded away and we didn't renew it, because we already know she is a female and she was first hatched and so the largest of the lot.
The rings won't stay on until they are about ten days old. We tried a bit earlier and had to replace them a few times already. From now on we'll just wait until they are ten days before putting them on, OR we'll put a piece of Vet Wrap on the bands to keep them in place until they stay on their own, or maybe both.
And we'll keep posting here until they are grown or gone. Becky will be flying Red, so she'll probably start a thread on her sometime soon.

HA!!! Greg your post gave me a tickle... trophy wife my arse. His folks aren't alive, I'm the only one who has to put up with him but it's not so bad. If I weren't here to keep the bird records though things would be a mess. He had a list of ppl interested in birds but can't find it now... poor baby, what would he do without me.
We are knee deep in poop and quail up to our elbows. Babies are so much fun. Too bad you and Tasha don't live closer, we'd love to have you over to see the flock.

A larger female Cooper's could be taking them regularly. Or a tiercel Harris. These tiercel goses should fly at around 620-650 grams, and that is great for crow hawking. My 454 gram (one pound) Cooper's was a great crow hawk! My female German gos was a fantastic crow and rook hawk! I did a lot of car hawking with both, but I also abandoned the car a lot and snuck up on them on foot. These were both birds that would take long slips and chase them high into the sky and take them.

Nope, not much of a chance! I'd like for most of them to be gone in about two weeks. We'll be having Ms Havoc raise at least one male, and Becky may be raising one for someone, but it would be best for them to be in their new homes before they have any significant feather growth. We have one other female for sure and one needs to be redone. All eight are doing well.
Parker is down the road about fifty miles from us, but we have some hunting areas down that way, and there are a few other falconers living in that area.
Hey Richard! Congrats! I didnt know then but you must have been who Roger Tucker was talking about last week. We had the conversation about how i go general this oct, if it was any sooner id deffinatly be looking you up this year. Till then ill have to work with a passage, but then that may be better for my first gos eh?
Stellar work, That has got to feel so cool!

We let our first chick go to it's new owner Sunday and it was exciting. I feel really good about this guy, he really wants to do the bird Justis and will be calling us for advice. I got pictures this morning of the eyass in it's new home and he's eating out of a dish now. I knew he would once he was away from the other babies. He flew in from Georgia to pick him up. Here's a pictures of our female, I think I'm going to call her Lil Ms. She's the first one that hatched and she's out of Ms Havoc. More pictures to come of the rest of the gang.
