soak some dry dog food and break it into pieces.leave a bowl of this in the box with the bird and also try to hand feed him just in case he wont pick it up himself yet. He should react to the food when he gets hungry enough. Give him some water by dipping your finger in water then touching his beak. Let us know how you get on. Unless he is ill or injured, there is no reason to pts, it might just take some good old time and effort.
Post it to me I will find a good home for it.:yawinkle:

Well ive managed to get it to eat a few worms, but i thought once it started to eat it might show more interest but it doesnt, it doesnt seem to realise its food, that or its too scared to take it without a struggle. Also it doesnt seem to want to use its feet, but it is still very alert, is this common in young birds coz i am thinking it just might be that it hasnt built its strength up yet?
ps what does PTS mean?

Should have left it well alone, the perents would have been looking after it and feeding it... its got no chance with you now. I cant beleave that people think that young birds that have just left the nest have been left by the perent birds, ever heard the term "BRANCHER" ....?

Get it imprinted and jessed up, and entered on things that buzz, and then you can use it to kill thoses damned houseflys and bluebottles !!!
It'll entertain you if nowt else !!
Be better than using fly spray.
Be a more environmentally friendly way of killing flies !!

I applaud you for doing your best to save the birds life! Too many people on here jump down the throat of anyone that isn't taking care of a raptor. Get a life folks! Now myself, personally, would have gathered it up and thrown it in with my coops to help her molt!

its ncie that youl trying to do the best for this bird
but
is it not illegal to take one from the wild and kep as your own as people jokingly or not have been sugesting?
i know you cant put it back with the parents but thats still like taking it from the wild.
can anyone shed some light as i would hate for you to be punished for trying to look after him.
i only plan on keeping him until he can fly and feed himself then ill put him in the garden with the other sparrows. If there is any wildlife rescue centres around my area i would be happy to let them look after it until then but i dont know of any.

then be careful not to spend to much time with him and make sure it cant see you as much. otherwise he will be imprinted on you and will have no hope in the wild.

A local vet may be able to help or atleast put you in touch with a wild animal centre.
Good luck

Cripes, folks!
The guy just wants to help a young bird out. Why does everything have to degenerate into a sermon?
It ended up in his trailer and he felt a sense of responsibility to help it get on its way.
Damo, just keep pumping bugs of any kind into it. Don't worry it isn't eating alot or standing, as you don't know how to speak sparrow.
I'd do the same.

Thanx mate, appreciate it.
i only let the bird see me when i feed it, other than that its left in a room on its own, still trys to get away when i go near it.

Glad to see your doing well with the sparrow. I have a wildlife centre but Im in Ireland, so no good to you there.
Just so the others know, there isnt a bird in the uk or Ireland that cant be hand reared and released, most of the birds I get here should have been left alone, but it doesnt mean their instant demise if they are picked up by ignorant people. And there are always cases like Damo's, where the bird is in iminent danger or injured, and obviously need help.
For f**& sake dont criticise people for doing what feels right to them, just because you dont give a damn.

I had a young sparrow in a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. I put him in a canary show cage I found and hung it out the back - when the young bird called, the hen sparrow flew to the cage and fed him. This meant the local cats couldn't get him, as he still could fly well tho' he was feathered. After about 3 days, I removed the cage front, and off he went with mum.
My grandfather used to use a similar method in his younger days to rear wild finches etc.
Keith.
