I read an article recently saying it was illegal to hunt Deer with an Eagle in the UK! Can anyone confirm this?

As far as I am aware it is illegal in Scotland but legal in England.

I'm sure there are VERY few places in the UK where an Eagle could be flown at Deer, except the highlands.

Muntjac in open woodland would be fun, as would fallow, and sika.

I've seen them doing it on the continent and the Eagles seem to be quite capable! Is it just our usual beaurocracy that prevents it?

George,
Cinnibars first kill was a roe deer. It wasn't planned but it flushed and she took it by the napper. I am not saying I am against it, but it wasn't a pleasant experience and I would not repeat it in a hurry. The Deer (Scotland)Act stipulates how deer may be killed and bar certain exceptions the only legal way is with a rifle, the calibre of which depends on the species of deer.
Neil.

Hi Neil,
The Videos that you see as usual don't show the full picture! I take it it is a struggle for the bird and isn't a quick kill? This isn't something that I'm interested in doing but wanted to clarify the statement in the article!
George.

Certainly wasn't a quick kill and if the deer decides to struggle, the potential for injury and feather damage is too great in my book, although I have had several sporting flights(but unsuccessfull) when the eagle has been waiting on at a decent pitch and deer have flushed below.

As far as I am aware hawking deer in england is perfectly legal, only in scotland is it illegal.

I have seen deer flights on the continent, and know exactly what is involved.

I believe the deer act says it is illegal to kill deer with anything other than a suitable firearm.
That means as far as I can see it would be illegal in England as well as Scotland to hawk for deer. The deffinition of suitable firearm differs in Scotland and England.

That doesn’t mean to say you can’t catch the deer with an eagle and then dispatch it with a fire arm? Not my cup of tea anyway so I don’t give a toss. Alf.

Cant see many falconers carrying a rifle of the appropriate calibre with them as well as an eagle:roll:
but know what you mean

Aside from the legalities how practical is it in the UK? After a kill it must be a ****** to carry an eagle on your arm and try to lug a fully grown roe deer on your shoulder back down the hill!!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

My first Gos Finish Parent reared, flew at 2Lb 10oz, on her first free flight a Roe deer spooked from under a hedgrow she chased it all the way, trying to grab its head, the deer kept ducking its head & she hovered a bit over the hedgerow, the other side of the field, a good 100 yd flight, but i was thinking to myself "What do I do if she gets a hold".

What happens when your eagle that is released on a hare swaps quarry to a deer ,oops!, they will be trying to fine lions for killing wilderbeast next.

i was toled by a stalker that if the deer is INJURED then u are leagle to use anay call of rifle or shot gun to kull it at short range / point blaik range so u chod carry a 410 shotgun (as my frend dose when stalking or more to the point me) and when the bird catches it dis spatch it

Looks a little set up, but impressive front flip. Surely hunting deer or even foxes/ wolves would just be too much risk to feather damage? Especially with wolves there must be some fatalities.

my mhh takes hare and quite regurlay and he gets throwen around like that and his feathers arnt too bad just some broken tips to tail feathers if a bird took a fox by the nek or face thay shoodent be mutch risk of the bird getting bit or killed but i do think wolves are a bit to riskay but i supoz the same would aplay to a wolves but then agen havent seen manay wolves running around scotland so a wouldent worrie about it persionlay if i had an eagle
