cracking.
got to say they are really awesome birds.

always wondered and puzzled over why so many folk peg out eagles, (all species) on blocks rather than bows.

anyone shed a light??

just a guess but wouldnt they prefer to perch on a crag in the wild ?
it would also have to be a hell of a bow to accomodate the foot span .

when was the last time you saw a bald' on a crag??

blocks are flat topped. not the perfect foot position for an eagle.
also. any eagle (in the wild) which takes up position on a crag aint there 24--7.....

the reason i ask is ive seen many an eagle on display etc on blocks with the back talon just about horizontal.
it dont look comfortable nor healthy.

are you saying a bow could not be padded up or made to accomodate the footspan of an eagle, be it male goldie or female bald??

I always see them in big raincoast trees ;)
We always had the on at the center (as well as the female goldie) on big bows we had made at a welders with big rope wrapped around

sorry, i didnt mean to come across cheeky.

ive never seen a bald in its natural suroundings either but all TV viewing installed a picture in my mind of tree perching, etc.

any ive seen in captivity were perched in bows.

I must agree with Fawkes as the eagles I have seen at various centres have been bowed out on very large bows which were wrapped with some very big rope. I see eagles daily in the wild where I live and it is usually on the end of a branch of a large pine tree. I would assume that a bow would simulate that the best. At the centre where I work we keep our eagles (bald and golden) on a variety of sizes of natural branches in there enclosure. Our eagles are not trained as they are rehab raptors with amputations of one sort or another. Will look through some of my pictures and see if I have any of Storm (golden eagle) or Manwe (Juvenile Bald Eagle) on their bows. Not the best pic but atleast you can see the bow. The second pic is of the new set up for the eagles at this particular centre. It is a long metal pole in the ground with some large logs at the end for the eagles to perch on. They can be inside out of the weather or out as they choose.
Cheers,

Bruce

Haha.. that my old center! They changed it around since I left so I cant really comment on how well that new system works. Looks good though (you've been there since I have!)

Was down not to long ago. Gill and Robyn were up here in Kamloops last week on a movie set with Manwe and Judge Dredd (Turkey Vulture). They were here for a week and didn't get to shoot any film with the birds as filming was very disfunctional and now they will probably have to film on a green screen with background put in later. They were just finishing they eagle area when I was there and not sure how it is working for them now. I know someone I talked to at the Vancouver zoo had some reservations as the eagles would be able to get up some speed if they were to be at the back of the pole and rush towards who ever was going to pick them up. Not sure if this will be a problem but it was really looking great when I saw it last.
Cheers,

Bruce

Not any different than the other set up we had - two low perches with a pole in between - only inside. If it was sitting at the back you still had to go into its space without having control. Maybe because it was shorter it would have less speed, but still. Who did you talk to at the Zoo?

We have the other young Eagle from that same clutch as the one from Hagley and ours won't entertain a bow perch at all. When tethered to one he just sits on the floor. But he'll quite happily sit on a block all day! With our other eagles we generally alternate what they sit on (bow at nght, block through the day, or vice versa). Personally I think the eagles happiness is the upmost opinion and if he ain't happy sitting on a bow then I won't force him to sit on one!
Falcon Fabrication do a specified Eagle bow which is great for most large Eagle species for those thinking there isn't one available to purchase!

The Eagle we are referring to is juvenile yes. Both the one in the pic from Hagley and ours are from the same clutch this year, making them about 16 weeks old!
