Who would like to vacation in Canada and learn how to make hoods?? I have been asked on numerous occasions if I would be available for hoodmaking lessons.. Well ,,with the help of a few others,, Falconry Hoods International is proud to announce the FIRST HOODMAKING WORKSHOP..This is still in the early stages but here is what we are offering.
The five day workshop will take the hoodmaker thru every step of the process to make a top quality hood. From selecting the the most suitable leathers right thru to the compeltion of the hood.
Fellow Hoodmakers, Dennis Maynes and Scott Webster have already donated their services for the Workshop and with my self, every aspect of hoodmaking will be covered..EVERYTHING WILL BE HANDS ON!!
Dennis Maynes will show and TELL ALL how to construct, dye and block what I think is the finest glued hood in the world. he has over 30 years exp and his inovations and ideas and HOW TO DESIGN New patterns is unmatched..He will cover Dutch, Indian and Arab hoods. He will also share his techniques on braiding both nylon jesses and loop leashes, they are top notch..He will also demonstrate how to apply any new patterns to fit your set of blocks.
Scott Webster will show STEP BY STEP how to make the hidden stitch Dutch hood and Arab hoods. Anyone who has seen a Webster hood will agree there are NONE finer..
Ken Hooke will reveal all his tooling coloring and sewing techniques that he has been perfecting for over 4 years, as well how to make many other different styles of hoods he has specialized in.
EVERYTHING WILL BE COVERED.
Your tution fee of $700.00US WILL include a complete set(34) of Chinook blocks, dozens of patterns,, DAILY lunches, and a Banquet Buffet dinner on the final night of the Workshop.AS well all equipment such as dyes, cutting knives, leather etc will be provided..
I have worked out special rates for accomodations at a local Hotel and reduced Breakfast and Dinners as well..
The Workshop will be limited to 10. I have three already checking flights to Winnipeg, Canada, and I have not even advertised....
Yes,, is this VERY NEW ,, RADICAL AND A VERY DIFFERENT IDEA !! But what a great way to vacation in the middle of Canada and learn or improve your hoodmaking skills..
As stated perviously this is still in its infancy , IT WILL ONLY GET BETTER!!
SO SORRY..I DO APOLOGIZE FOR THIS EVER CHANGING POST,, BUT AS SCOTT, DENNIS AND MYSELF COME UP WITH MORE IDEAS,, I WILL BE FOREVER ADDING TO THIS THREAD!!
If you are interested please contact me..

Canada is top of my list of countries I want to see and has been there for a long time.
Would have been nice to combine, but unfortunatly there's no way I can do it.
Hope these will be a succes and you will keep organising them!

Hey I realise it is a long way to travel but anyone looking or thinking of coming to Canada for a vacation in the summer, which is just beautiful at that time of the year,, this just might be the extra "KICK" one would need to come..
I have been asked so many times I thought I would put one together, plan it out and see what happens..I have secured the workshop at our leather store, the hotel have given us a very good rate and the three of us are really Gung HO to pulls this off..
If it works out great if not,, no biggie, Dennis ,Scott and I and the two confirmed will still have a blast..

It really does sound a great opportunity and a super little business venture. Put up a website (if you haven't already) and I'm sure your lists will be full.

Ben, have sent you a PM.. I want to assure EVERYONE, that this will be a well organized and professionally run workshop.. People will be coming great distances and I want all to know that ,,
1-YOU WILL ENJOY YOUR VISIT TO WINNIPEG,
2-YOU WILL LEARN TO MAKE HOODS!!
The tentative date is likely the second week of May,, May, 12-16, the weather here is very nice,, and there are alot of activities that are just getting going here in Wpg.. but that is not finalised ,, and depending on what others say could change..
It gives plenty of time to book your holidays, flights etc..Especially with family..
Oh yes,, I am HOPING to have a guest GRAND Master hoodmaker come in for at least one day and show us ALL how to make hoods. Not 100% but am working dilegently on it..

I would love to come! With it being that far in the future I could probably work out how to get some time off. I wonder if I could make the drive in 2 days.... it would be 5 days for the course, yes?
SakerJack
13-08-2007, 06:28 PM
Hawkman,, tons of stuff here,Children Museum, Zoo, SHOPPING, just tell that to the Mrs!! Trust me your family would not be bored for one minute..
Fawkes, I have driven straight thru 26 hours.. Would not recommend it but can be done. Flights are cheap,, Yes it is a full 5 day course..
It seems a better time might be in the summer when people are taking vacations, Dennis, Scott and I are flexable.. Perhaps before eyass season,, Late June?

Noooo... please not June.. work is so overrun with little eyasses in June it would be hopeless to make it out. At least in early May they are still eggs! April would be perfect... :D

Fawkes,,As I get more feedback from interested parties I am sure we can get a date that works, lets see what develops. I have added some dates for the hotel so that is done as is the workshop so those have been looked after.
I guess the people that commit first will have a very big say on when the workshop takes place.
The two that have committed and have given deposits have no problem when it is..

Thanks Kevin..
Over the next while I will be monitoring which would be the best time. A decision will have to be made by Nov 1. I will then post the dates and then will accept deposits that are totally refunable if the the number of interested people does not reach 10.
I must have people to commit as I need to commit to the hotel, caterer, the Leather store , get all the equipment that we will need and arrange flights for Denis, Scott and hopefully one other and get the ball rolling..
Thank you all for your interest..

Thanks Dan,,
I have recieved several e-mails asking more about the WShop.
Again, the Workshop is a full 5 days!! It will run from a Monday -Friday and we will go all day likely 9-5, and Friday nite we will have a small banquet.. We will award the finest hood made over the 5 day period, the funniest moment and there should be a lot to choose from and other awards which we will announce at a later date.
There will be evening activities as well.. And yes there will be LOTS of time to have a few pints and just sit and BULLS**T. I will host at least one BB'Q at my home and we have a small social hall available if needed..
We three have put alot of effort and work into this,,
Trust me YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED!!

LOOKIN GOOD!!, the tentative dates are May 19-23, 2008. I will have much more info in the next 10 days on my site as well as Scott Websters. I will soon post the 5 day itinerary, and my web site is being updated with a small video on the workshop..
As well there will be a short course on how to make braided nylon leashes and jesses as well as how to make nylon/gor-tex braces for hoods,,.. These are two items that many have asked for so have added them to the WShop.
More to follow.

Ken,
Is this for people with some experience or none? And what would we need to bring? I would love to learn to make hoods, but have no experience and this class sounds like a good way to get started! Oh yeah, and how are the two hoods I ordered coming along? LOL I am anxiously awaiting them as the hood I am using is ****!

Hi Ken,
just saw the thread, very good idea:supz: . Problem for me to come is the date, we'll have chicks and eggs all over the place at this time. Shame.
Good luck for the workshop anyway. If you do one in Winter next time I will seriously consider.
Take Care,

FF, the workshop is open to anyone with the desire and passion to make good quaility hoods.. It does not matter what your skill level is..You will learn a great deal and have a great time,, Hope you can make it.. As for your hoods I am out of town as I write this and hope to be back Wed afternoon, your hoods are almost finished and hope to have them in the mail to you by the weekend..
Hey Tobi,, hello again,, I thought about when the best time would be and most said earlier in the spring the better exactly for the reason you mention..
I am also not to sure how many would like to visit Canada, especially Wi(nter)nnipeg in the middle of our famous Canadian winters!! Although you being stuck in the desert (if I can say that you are stuck in such a beautiful place) you might rather enjoy it..
SakerJack
18-09-2007, 01:37 PM
FF, Everything you need will be provided, most of the tools are for you to keep, as well as the set of blocks.
Basically ,bring enough clothes, very informal events are planned for the evening activities but I would recommend a warm jacket..It can get very cool that time of the year here in Winnipeg..

Hi Ken,
the thing I miss here in Dubai most is the WINTER and the SNOW!!!
Cannot wait to get on Vacation to Germany and see and feel some. last year i wasn't lucky, no snow in Ger.
Canadia is one of the top destinations for the next few years anyway, got a buddy from Toronto, and would be visiting him sooner or later anyway.
Anyways wish you best of luck for your workshop, let us know how it went!

Would the $700 include a place to sleep, too? I'd love to go, but we probably can't afford it:cry: But it's a long way off yet...I suppose you'd need the deposit relatively soon since it's a first come first serve. If it goes well would you do it again, maybe?
SakerJack
19-09-2007, 10:16 PM
Hey Tasha, Accomodations are up to you. I have a friend who manages a fine hotel and have arranged a very good rate per nite,, depending on the numbers who share rooms or prefer to stay by themselves.
I am taking care of the daily lunches during the workshop , the Banquet Dinner and we are having a BB'Q at my home on one of the nites.
Will I do it again?? I am hoping but it would really depend on the other instructors and would THEY do it again.. I think this can only get bigger but time will tell..
Yes it will be first come first serve..

We'll probably have to pass for now, but maybe there'll be a cancellation closer to the date or an open spot a few months from now:) I think the closest hoodmaker to Minneapolis is Rick Woods in Iowa, so there's not really anyone to learn from close by (that I know of, anyways). Ah well. I haven't really the time for it, anyways:P It's going to be a lucky bunch of people that get to go, though:!:
SakerJack
20-09-2007, 02:21 PM
Tasha there are still some openings. You are only an 8 hour drive from me.
Give it a thought,, I am guessing you could share a room and split the hotel room costs? Just a thought..
Fawkes
20-09-2007, 08:37 PM
would also love to come... whats the hotel rate over there? (and maybe Tasha wants to split a room with me..)
Not sure I could get the time off though, we are kind of inundated with chicks in May.
SakerJack
20-09-2007, 08:44 PM
Hey Fawkes,, thanks for kicking in the offer to share with Tasha,, depending on how many rooms I am trying to get them for like 40.00 -50..ish per nite,, Cannot give a definate until we have number of people number of rooms we must have and number of meals etc..
Now we can also have three to a room if one wants a cot,, so the prices of the rooms shouldn't be a factor..
Fawkes
21-09-2007, 02:34 AM
Anyone for threes? I'll take the cot honest.. :D

:) IF (and that's a VERY big if) we can come up with the money and there's still an opening I'll do it. But, it could be quite awhile before we know we have the money (like, possibly right up to the minute, though hopefully not-if we can sell a bunch of prints at the NAFA meet and actually make some money we might be able to afford it:D ).
