Any falconers out there in the USA with advice for a fellow interested in getting into these beautifull birds. I am a master falconer who had flown longwings and shortwings (goshawks) and I am in no rush to get that eagle permit untill I am ready. I was wondering what the best birds are to approximate the training and equipement. I would assume large passage/PR buteos and shortwings (female ferruginous, finish goshawk) etc. Any advice would be appreciated.:-D

Speak to Berkut, I believe he is one of the Goldie experts on this forum. I am sure he will keep you on the right track. ALB

I don't think any bird can really quite prepare you for a golden. As a master falconer with the experience you have, and the procedures you have in place prior to obtaining your eagle permit ,you will be more than ready when the time comes. It is really just the extra size you will have to cater for. There are very few eagle falconers catching quarry regularly in the states but it may be worth tracking one down and going out hunting with him/her.
Unfortunately in this country there are no set procedures in place for obtaining golden eagles. This means that many are getting into the wrong hands and spend most of their time as garden ornaments and in very poor feather condition.
If you contact Berkutchi on here. She is from Oklahoma and is an eagle fanatic and may be able to put you in touch with someone.
Hope all goes well when the time comes.
Regards,
Neil.

Dan McCarron is your man. He lives in Wyoming and hunts coyotes. Look in the NAFA directory for contact info.

You might try Scott Simpson also. I believe he just moved to Casper a few months ago, in fact. But don't tell him I sent you;) I think he's enjoying the privacy of not many human neighbors:lol:

Maybe look up Lance and Jill Morrow in Jeffry City, they have led a lot of trapping expeditions in Wyoming including the one I was on a few years back. Sam Crow is your man at USDA in Wyoming too, he's fantastic. Join up with the IEAA which seems to be where most US eagle falconers chat. That was created by Mike Kuriga from Pennsylvania.

There having a GOE (gathering of the Eagles) in November in Garden City Kansas. Also you may want to check out theeaglealliance.com and also the IEAA ( International Eagle Austringers Assoc. ) I myself will be going out to Wyoming late next year or early 09 to get a Golden. My best advice to you is to hunt, hunt and hunt more with as many Eagle Falconers as you can. One of the Federal Requirement's is that you have 2 references letters with Large raptor experience and a Female Red tailed Hawk will not cut it. maybe a Female Frug. It took me 3 years to get 2 letters. If you can not get the letters you can not get the permit. The only change that there might be is ,if the regs gets changed and drops all that in 08. You kinda run into a bind when you do not live near any Eagle Falconers as myself. I put thousands of miles on my Vehicle . But in the end this is my dream so I guess you have to ask yourself, what will you do to get it right ?

I am viewing this as a 3-4 commitment to get an eagle permit. I have flown lafemale goshawks and large falcons but I was wondering what the best choice would be, not just for the regs, for a close approxiamation (passage female ferruginous is what I am thinking right now). I would be interested in any advice you have or what your experience has been.
