im pulling my steppe out the moult in the next few days and was intrested to know if people who fly eagles tail mount bells , or do you put the bells on the legs and just tail mount for telem ? this steppe of mine is a bit of a tail breaker so im going to tail shealth him and i dont want to give him another excuse for pulling as his tail mount , are eagles prone to pulling it?its just my luck to put it on after a good moult and him snap one or two , any advice would be great please ,

Don't have a great deal of experience with this but we're using a large but normal tail mount with bell attached and telemetry mount on it. No problems what so ever. Bird is a social imprint Steppe.

Can't help much i'm afraid as i don't usually use a bell on an eagle. As for the telem, this year i intend to use the back pack for the first time. If i were to use a bell it would be leg mounted though.

A number of reasons but apart from personal preference, the main one being that ANYTHING i fit to the tail goes on both decks and i find that with eagles you are not gauranteed a full moult of the tail each year. If you think about it you will understand the problems you can get, only one of the decks moult and your plectrum is attached to a moulted deck and an unmoulted one and a new feather is pushing its way through:(. It may not be a good enough reason for most people, but i find that due to the time it takes for eagles to complete a moult, most eagle owners i know are paranoid about the feathers.
Unlike the smaller birds, a leg bell is not such an encumbrance to an eagle and is my preference were i to fit one. As you are obviously aware there are various reasons for fitting a bell, not least of which is to help you locate the bird that has killed in cover. An eagle killing in cover and not being able to locate, is IMO pretty rare in these parts but out of sight is another matter, and in that case, its the telem thats reqd and not a bell.

It will be intresting to see how Bio-tracks, back-pack lives up on the eagles, released up here recently.

Personally I don't bell eagles and I use a Marshalls tail clamp for the telemetry.
The season before last I left the transmitters on my eagles all season without a problem but last season on the first night Bentley pulled at the transmitter and snapped the deck feather it was attached to.
I intend to try the track pack this year as well as a tail mount as before but the transmitter will be removed after use each day to aviod the temptation.
