i don't have one but a guy that i know here had a couple and i got to see them fly. i did not really expect much after seeing the weirdness of them--i mean a little too weird. the bird i saw fly game was a three or four year old intermewed, captive breed eyass. it did not seem huge to me but the mannerisms were pretty much like most of the rest of the hawkeagles i have been around--a little spaced out. after a bit of getting settled in the bird started to pay attention as we walked through the sage. we flushed a jackrabbit about 40yards out and the darn thing smoked it--i mean it flew down the jack like a goshawk and the rabbit did not let out but one shriek and was done for before we got up to it. impressive. i think we caught three jacks that afternoon, total, pretty much like the first one though one was a long slip. i do not think we missed one jack. walking back to the car, through thick sage the OHE spotted a cotten tailed rabbit sneaking away in the deep cover and pounded it much like a harris hawk would. i have to say i was impressed. the falconer owner said that the first year these birds are a total zero (in the wild they are fed for much of their first year by the adults) clumsy and no interest in hunting. i guess you have be thinking very long term if you get one of these things, my friend said it is probably not worth the trouble. the female i saw fly was seriously injured (hit by a car) while flying tree squirrels and i think died but i am not sure. i don't think the male ever really came up to speed and was sent off to a breeding program. that's all i know. Last i heard the falconer that had these was back to flying Redtails--his first love.

Well, I think that everybody on this forum will love to fly an ornate!
And yes, they are awesome hunters!
You can take with an ornate the same game that you can catch with an goldie and a goshawk !(no wolves and no little birds of course ! )
Check out this dream bird !

I've seen the same female Ornate that Hatcheroo saw in 1992. She also took a cotton tail in fine style off the fist that day. I called the falconer later and he told me of her tragic accident. She was not killed but, had a balance issue and could not stand up correctly. She trashed all of her feathers because of it. I also don't know if she is still alive. One thing that was
'funny' about her was her voice. She sounded like a squeaky metal gate.
I don't know if anyone has them in the US any more. I think that Hurricane Katrina took out the ones I knew of in 2005.
They were going for around $50,000.00 US at that time. They need to be used in falconry, but again, they are a long term commitment. Long fledgling period with the parents.

I think Bob Berry is trying to breed OHE tho i don't know how many pairs he has. he has has a pretty decent tropical raptor breeding set up he established for his Orange breasted falcons (which i think he has several pairs). Don't know if he sells the progeny or not.

I fly blyth's hawk eagle and she was dam slow and soft no agression what so ever in her first year. However this year is about to change she fly so much faster with an arieal ability of a gos. She does fly like a jet plane and her aggression has gone right up but still manageable. It's definitly true about long fledging period of an eagle no matter the size of the birds but larger eagle will take even longer.

A distant cousin of JHE. Very beautiful and graceful, but savage.
I have to agree with HawkMom and HawkEagle, eagle really need lots of time to be ready. My Indian Black Eagle is the same. He learns slowly at first, but now he's already showing me that he will make a good hunter soon ;)

Mint pictures8-) What are their temperments like? Are they imprinted or parent reared?
Mark Moglich

They are both parent raised. I'm training the female jumping to fist at the moment and male is doing the same. maybe someday we can breed them but for now we will have fun hunting them.
