Would someone please post the dates, location, etc. for this year's NAFA meet? I believe it is in Colorado this November. The NAFA website does not have the information posted in the general information areas.

Thanks! Denise

Denise,

It is not posted in the general areas because you have to be a member to attend, so it is in the member's only section. I f you are wanting to go, send me a PM and I will send you the hotel details, registration info, etc.

Correction, you don't have to be a member to attend, but you do need to be a member to attend meetings, talks etc. at the meet.

Eagle Owl

Well, according to Darryl, you have to be a member to attend the meet. This is taken from a letter that he wrote to another NAFA member regarding bringing a guest to the meet.

"Remember, that he can't attend as your guest. He must be a member to attend the meet."

Just another NAFA f***ed up rule!

Well on the top of the NAFA meet page it say "Please note that you must be a current NAFA member, immediate family member, or invited guest to attend the annual meet". So I would take that to mean as long as you list them on your regestration form as a guest it would be fine.

I am aware of what it says on the website, I am just relaying what Darryl said in a recent e-mail to another NAFA member that wanted to bring a "guest" to the meet. He was pretty emphatic that guests were NOT allowed at the meet. Obviously, that does not include immediate family members. I think it is ridiculous, especially for those that come from overseas.

As for Denise, unless you join NAFA, you will have to find someone that will put you on their registration form if you want to participate in any of the talks, vendor area, etc. It is well worth the membership fee if you plan to attend the meet. Besides, if you plan on becoming a falconer, you need to support the National club anyway. While they have a lot of screwed up issues right now, they have done good work in the past.

Yeah, seems pretty strange to me. A friend of mine is coming from overseas for the meet and I'm just going to stick him on as a guest. If NAFA has issues guess well just deal with it at the meet.

You going to NAFA Brandi?

NAFA is so screwed up right now. The powers that be seem to make their own rules as they go. It is ridiculous that Darryl says we can't have guests. The person Darryl said could not be a guest is from overseas, so it is kinda stupid for him to have to join NAFA. I doubt they will say anything as long as you register your guest. How do they know it is not your significant other.

And heck yeah I'll be at NAFA. We will have to meet up and have a drink! I am hoping that we can have an IFF get-together one evening. That would be great!!!! :supz: :supz: I have my IFF pin that I am gonna wear, too!

Yeah it seems pretty stupid- try to encourage overseas people to come then charge them 50 for NAFA membership and 35 for the meet itself not to mention the airfair etc. So well just go for it and see what happens. I figure it its just one person they wont think anything about it, as you said how do they know what relation the person is. They might get suspisious if your bringing 10 guests or something:lol:

IFF get together would be a good plan, i know quite a few people from here that are going. I think there should definatly be some thought put to that suggestion. Youve got a pin? Ive just got the bumper sticker- displayed with pride right under my Texas A&M Wildlife & Fisheries sticker:supz: .

The member and invited guest rule has been in effect for the meet since I've been a NAFA member (1977). This keeps the meet attended by falconers, (NAFA members) for falconers. I agree with this rule. I think that 'guests' can join NAFA at the meet then. The fee is reasonable, so why not?

Guys, the meet is BIG, 500 attendees, hundreds of raptors, etc. If this were published as an 'event' it would become a media circus, and a target for the animal rights (***!!!!). So keep it MEMBERS an INVITATION only.

FrootDog
05-10-2007, 03:28 AM
I agree with Kitty and NAFA on this one. It's really much ado about nothing if you ask me. If said overseas member spent thousands already then what's another $50 for membership? I would not spend the money to get to the UK and expect to attend a meet for free simply because I've already paid for airfare. If I can afford airfare and accomodations then I think I can afford another few bucks to attend the meet. Keep it limited to members and keep out the PETA hoopleheads.

Eagle Owl
05-10-2007, 03:57 AM
No one said anything about guests attending the meet for free. The issue is that it says invited guests can attend the meet, but Darryl contradicts this and says that is not allowed. I agree that we need to keep the "PETA hoopleheads" out of the meets. I am not saying that guests should not have to pay the meet fees, banquet fees, etc., but if you have a friend that you would like to bring, why must they join NAFA to attend?

What if I wanted to bring a old college Friend of mine to a meet. Why should they have to join NAFA to attend the meet? If they are a registered guest of mine, paying the fees, then they should not have to join to attend. Krys, what if Kylie wasn't a falconer and you wanted to take her to the meet. Should she have to become a member to attend, or just attend as your guest? It does not say immediate family, girlfriends, and invited guests ;)

Tacatanach
05-10-2007, 05:12 AM
Theres a big difference between going as someones invited guest and just showing up. If i invite someone to attend something on my membership thats basicly me saying I approve them to come participate in this event on my membership, not just some random person showing up. I agree non-invited guests should have to join NAFA, but where do you draw the line for invited people- why should spouses and kids get in without a membership then? If anything they bring less to the meet and to NAFA- theyre not buying stuff from vendors for example while invited guests could very well spend money at vendors. While this may not directly benifit NAFA the more money spent at vendors means the more likely vendors will come back. I didn't realize how important this was at meetings until a few weeks ago when I was at the Wildlife Society national conference working the vendor check in. The organizer told us to do anything the vendors request since thats actually what makes or breaks meetings- if the vendors are happy the whole meeting will go well.

And lets be realisitc, its not like NAFA or other falconry club hides their presence when we have meets- the weathering yard tends to be at least somewhat in plain view, its in the news/newspaper, and how much you want to bet there's signs in Alamosa when we get there that say "welcome North American Falconers Association".

And in all that I forgot to answer your question- I didn't make it to NAFA last year, actually the last time i went was 2003. This year though the parents are taking my brother University visiting so this means I'm free to go to NAFA. Already talked Dr. Peterson (you might remember him) into letting me take my test early so I can leave friday!

Joining NAFA is not an issue. I will be attending as an invited guest of a friend from overseas, being he is the true falconer he will get the membership. In the meantime I need to make our travel arrangements, schedule time off work, etc... and I want to get started on that now.

Thank you all for the information! :)

If it is stupid to charge them then that must mean someone is in favor of it being free. This is not the issue of a friend or family member but relates to a falconer from the UK coming hear for the meet. I had to pay for my daughter to go to the THA meet so in that respect NAFA is cheaper than my state club.

Noone is against the 35 meet fee, but the 50 dollar NAFA membership seems a bit much- it is the North American Falconers Association after all. I am a skydiver and a member of the USPA. Their annual meet not only requires that you be a USPA member to go, but the boogie "aka meet" registration is VERY hefty. You have to pay just to get in. It is usually on a private airfield and you cannot even get close to watch the event as a spectator with out paying.
I can understand the added expense is sometimes a pain, but in the end it all goes to a good cause, supporting a club that does a lot for falconry in the US. While that might not be important to people from overseas, we all have one love and passion in common and it is important to keep it alive no matter what country you are from.

That is a contradictory statement. Are you saying that the UK falconer is not a friend, so should have to pay the NAFA membership fee? How is a UK falconer coming to the NAFA meet as an invited guest any different than a friend coming as an invited guest? I am not saying it is stupid to charge them, I am saying it is not fair to require them to join NAFA. Yes, in the THA, family members must pay a meet registration fee to attend the meet but you paying that fee along with your registration fee is still cheaper than the $40 registration fee at NAFA. So no, NAFA is not cheaper.

But that is a totally different concept. You are there to skydive which requires equipment that must me rented for you to conduct your activity (ie. plane rental).

My issue is that on the NAFA website, it says
"Please note that you must be a current NAFA member, immediate
family member, or invited guest to attend the annual meet."

However, Darryl has stated that bringing a guest is not allowed. If "invited guests" are not allowed, then why does it say they are? I do not think the meet should be open to anyone who wants to walk in off the street, but as a NAFA member, if I have a friend that lives overseas and I would like them to attend the meet as my guest, then they should be allowed to do so. They should not have to join NAFA to watch others fly their birds. If they need to pay a non-member registration fee, then NAFA should implement one. But why should "guests" have to pay for a NAFA membership when all it entails them to do is vote, (which in my opinion should not be allowed since they are overseas...they should not have a voice in what we do in our National club) and receive the HC and Journal. If they want those privileges, then they can opt to join. Invited guests are still making NAFA money by attending the banquet, purchasing from vendors, etc. If NAFA doesn't want invited guests at the meet, then they need to take it off their website.

So I'll be heading to a conference in a month or so. The fees for that meeting I can just about guarentee you blows a skydiving meet out of the water (500$ for a basic attendence fee, workshops or fieldtrips are aditional money), and thats childs play compared to the meeting my sisters off to next month where the basic fee is between 800$ and 1000$. All of these meeting though have 2 classes- a members fee and a non-members fee. The non members fee is less that what it would cost to join the organization and pay the members fee. I think this should be an option for the meet- its saves some money and also doesnt force people to join a club that in reality does nothing for them.

FrootDog

It could be that invited guest meets invited by NAFA otherwise all US falconers could get together and have a guest join them and effectively cut the paid attendance in half.

Just to point out, overseas members do not get to vote. Just residents of US, Mexico and Canada.

I believe "Invited" guests are those invited by the board. There should be a fee involved to go to the meet that would be more for non-members but less than the cost of joining and meet registration.

Greg you miss my point M8 I said I would be happy to pay my Dues be it for the meet or membership but $50 is a bit OTT just for one meet in addition to this Darryl is changing the rule without authority to do so and is saying you must be a member not a guest, this is what I object to the money is not a problem but being told that as a guest I am not welcome so join up and then you can come in is out of order so as I said I will not attend as I will not be dictated to and told I must join a Club that will do nothing for me except allow me to attend the one meeting, I have no vote or have any say in how NAFA is run as I live in the UK and have been invited as a Guest by many members.
No matter what is said or done now I will not attend as I do not like this type of attitude and I will not be forced to join NAFA even if I wanted to join I can go hunt almost anywhere in the world as a guest and be treated with respect for what I am and not told I have to join the secret society to be accepted

Its 50 for non North American members
straight off the NAFA webpage: Foreign Applicants: Outside, Canada, Mexico, and the US there is an additional $15.00 charge...Please submit you dues ($50,00)...

Yes i know that that goes to pay for the extra postage, but still, we charge non north american (therefore non-voting members) more to join, yet another thing that makes no sence.

Alright....I'm a bit confused. I have read through all the posts and still don't know whether you can bring an invited guest or not. Can you? Also, I put forward an application and the $35 fee for membership to NAFA back on the 26th of September and I still have not gotten a reply back on whether I'm a member now or not. I know that you have to have a user name/password to get into the 'member only' part of the NAFA site, but I have not recieved nor been able to make one. Can anyone tell me why this might be? Also, I have read that some people were writing about registering for the meet, and an additional meet fee. What's that all about? Answers to the above questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

The invited guest I think most of us are going along as planned until informed at the door otherwise.

NAFA membership usually takes months to get approval your first time since you have to get approved by the board, so I wouldn't worry yet. If you havn't been approved by the time your regester I woudl send a copy of your recipt with the regestration form. You will be given the id and password for the website as soon as your membership is approved. There is a meet regestration fee of 40$. If you are bringing a bird it is imperative you regester soon as Colorado has a bunch of bird import regulations that must be dealt with to bring a bird in the state. If you regester early there are fewer hoops to jump through than regestering later. Hope that helps

How do you go about registering for the meet? Sorry about all the questions.... I never did have anything for a reciept when I registered for membership to NAFA....I just printed off the application, sent a check for the fee and that was that. Also, I didn't know if you needed to add anything to the application besides the info that was asked and the fee. Was there anything else I needed to add that might mess up my approval?

I have the form pdfed, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll e-mail it to you. I would just note on the form you have applied for membership.

Did you get the signatures of support from a NAFA member or 2 people familiar with your interest in raptors? I think if you don't you have to go through a full board approval rather than just your region director, but I'm not exactly sure, been a few years since I've looked at the bylaws.

I cannot attend, but could someone give a 'NAFA' report? As to how many IFF members are at the meet. Unusual birds, great or unusual hunts (first NAFA meet attendees taking game, etc.).

I'm a NAFA member (since 1977) and an ex SE director. When I was director, the policy was NAFA members and their guests. I feel that if you have joined, sent your payment, then you are a member, especially if the payment has cleared.

Lets hope for good weather, (not too windy, cold, or hot). Freezing at night, 40's during the day.

It was awesome meeting so many people that treated me so kindly and taught me so much! Pics are great, by the way. :) I tried to post some pictures myself, but for some reason it won't work for me. Any tips? Lol. And looks like you got quite a snow there.....I was lucky and didn't have to drive back in crappy weather. It snowed here in Nebraska the day after, though. I will hopefully be able to make it to the T.H.A meet in Jan, so see some on you then!! :)

It was a great meet in Colorado and even with the cold weather (I'm in Texas so anything less than 60 degrees is classified as cold), it was great fun drinking and hawking....Even got in the hot tub a time or two....:supz:....did I mention the drinking??.....and then of course, we did some drinking too.....we even managed to do some hawking when not drinking.......

As for the picture posting, Open an account(free) on Photobucket and add some pictures on there.....It will resize them for you, but it isn't very fast. Best bet is to download a free program called "VSO Image Resizer" and then add them to the Photobucket account. All you need to do then is click on the IMG code at the bottom of the picture and paste the link to the forum.....WhaaaLaaa! pictures are up!

Well, we all had a blast at the meet! This was my first and I am already looking forward to next year.
We made it home safely, not without a chorus of "are we there yets" especially from Merger (Kev) :) I hooked him up with a longwinger in the area to keep him busy while I am at school but still found him wandering around Wal-Mart when I got home. That boy will walk (hitch) anywhere! We are taking him to Oklahoma this weekend to hunt black-tailed jacks...so another car ride is in the making!
I am so tired, I need a vacation to recover from my vacation!

Nylon jesses like I use, only I double mine so they are stiffer than leather. I like mine better than leather and they don't get hung up on stuff.

If your bird picks at it's jesses you can't use nylon because it does fry if picked at!

Look close you can see them on my little 535g MHH that has this 3lb CO bunny undercontrol!
