Had a limited time to fly the last week or so...(doing me head in..)
but.
She has been providing us with some fantastic flying and chases..throwing up to 50-70 ft and stooping in..flying in and out of trees in the woods,folding up through the smallest of gaps..last wednesday we were out and she took 3 rabbits..this wednesday she took two c**k pheasants..out with Jase Whittock,(good spotter and filmer)today we had a cracking rabbit flight(the rabbit had a 200yrd head start and only just made it.. http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif )..but we finished on a partridge http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/images/smiles/a_goodjob.gif http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/images/smiles/a_yumdumdoodledum.gif ..wich is gonna find its way in to me old belly-o tomozzo eve.. http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/images/smiles/cheers.gif

Out this afto for a few hrs ferreting some new land with Jason...
Nell ,his Gos, for her second outing of the day :!: up first..lot of rumbling..rabbit out..good long solid chase,she saw it late to be honestJase was the opposite side ,think she would have nailed it...Jase got her back to the fist in a jiffy...,
Rio turn..not long,she bated,i let her go and a longggg chase ensued..the coney had a good 60 yrds on her,he ran down the inside of the hedgerow first,to be honest,i didnt see it till wayyy down..but ya gotta let her goooo.... :lol: got her back and ooppps.load of bullocks ,as if from nowhere decended on us..and they were mean bast##ds..aint sure if they wanted to fight us..or sh#g us :shock: got the jill back..and was walking back,Jase put Nell away..both birds had saw something in the middle of the field and bated,we thought it was at a few baby conies that had been fliting in and out in the distance...told Jase to let Lil ,me dog out for a quick spin round the field..got about 50 yrds and wallop!..Rios' off the fist..30yrds later..Partridge number two in the bag.. (lot of rabbit there Jase..we will take the full team of ferrets next time,.she got the run ariound today dude.. and make sure the bullocks aint around eh mate....) :-D

Two more rabbits for Rio yesterday and a couple of excellant chases through..well,..just about anything:!: ....Spartheones bird Nell, delighted with a fine cock pheasant and some real long slips..(got him to chuck her at the 400 yarders Gaz:lol: )..top stuff..read Jasons thread on Nell for good account of a weird starting day..(compounded by the fact that i was just missed by a wheel that fell off of a 4x4 the morning before:!: ..and then the accident yesterday ..hhmmm...:rolleyes: )

Rabbit to day......
Started off today with a cracking flight on a cock pheasant..Slipped Rio from a 100 yrds away as the bird was up on the fence line..Rio made short work of the uphill climb and slammed in to him..started running but for some reason she didnt hold him,he got up and powered off over our heads..cocking like mad.!!..but Rio stayed on the floor..strange!..but as i got there i could see she had a couple of primaries in her foot and most of his back feathers & train.!!..she returned to the fist well p#ssed :evil:
next was a rabbit chase..good hard chase and she slammed in to the undergrowth milli seconds after the coney got to a hole ...took longer to come back..running to me then in to a tree for a sulk..
We knew the next thing up would DIE..!!!!..and not long after a short chase and a rabbit was brought to bear....(had a very short body this one??..but a big head!!..reminded me of PikeyPete !!)

Little rabbit today....
Started off and within 5 mins a rabbit broke from the hedgerow for some reason known only to it self (the dog cant yet be flushing as the wound isnt quite there..)..let her go late,..had sticky hand syndrome..she made up ground & crashed in to cover after it but to no avail..
another slip not long after brought the same resault....then we had a cracker of a flight on a cock pheasant...he bailed out by the side of a big barn..in the distance i saw Rio throw WAY up in the air and then stoop straight in after it..i got there (eventually,..:roll: went to jump a gate..most of me made it..me left shin didn't..ouchh:oops: ).the land owner was shouting ''i saw it all..quick,your bird got it under there.''.got down and looked under this shed-on-legs?? effort..Rio ran out to the fist..feathers everywhere..no pheasant..Jeff,the owner was gutted..''it had it,i saw it,''!!..he was so sorry he said..but he had enjoyed seeing it all ..then asked me why i didnt just go round the side of the gate as the fence was gone..(GIT)..explained that it was a special falconry thing that we have to do..involving breaking shins...:yawinkle: ..
went on me way..after a 'mistake' slip on a frigging tree rat wich left her hanging on to a wooden post..glad she missed....she nailed a ickle bunny that just didnt know really what to do..he ran..turned head on to her and BANG...:supz:..She was allowed a feed up as she wont be fed tomorrow as i cant get out..she will be bang on for Friday...

Hey Gaz...is someone going to fly RIO while you're gone? I would think it'd be a pain for both of you taking two weeks off right in the beginning(middle?) of the season...As much as I'd love to go hunting with y'all, I know I don't want to visit during hunting season again because it really threw a hiccup in my hunting when we came over for the Welsh Hawking Club meet a couple years ago. Maybe if it was at the end of the hunting season, or the very beginning before I trapped a bird...:lol:

Well,..a real red letter day today..Rio,Nell, & Mia out....and no kills..:confused::eek:
Unbeleivable...but some cracking flights..including Rio going uphill at full pelt for a 100yrds...but not so memorable was her hitting a barb wire fence..just missing the rabbit..but s##t..i thought that was it...TREACLE PANTS TIME.......

Upshot of the day was securing two,new, good dollops of cracking rabbit land:supz:

Rio,s been in the wars over the last few days guys,first the near miss on the fence,ending up with a few small cuts on the top of her feet.
Then today she had a great slip on a rabbit that when she bound to it ,it spun her up into the air 3 times,then she let it go to recatch it and be dragged under a metal 5 bar gate,a lower one to,then she let it go again and recaught only the be bucked off at the end of the last tussle,this rabbit had more fight in it than some small hares.

Started off today with a view to ferreting a couple out for a guest we had with us,(Tyack,with his male Gos,. people might reconise it from the 'Once Upon a time in the westcountry' dvd, as the immature male slaying stuff)..but as the wind was a little bit...fresh.....we walked around with the dog.where it was a tiny bit less windy...Rio bated so i let her go ,a rabbit had a short run to dense cover,she marked it in a tree so i went for a reflush,i dont normally but as we were talking literally seconds of her marking in the tree i crashed in to the brambles..heard a scurry..and Rio had a redtail moment but to no avail..quickly back to the fist...
Nell was up next and after a hard flight in to the wind hit a high tree..unusually for her she decided to take a little break,a couple more flights from her and Jason decided to do the 'sensible' austringer thing and put his bird away to concentrate on helping us..(fair play mate) Nell had had some blood and good stuff the day before..so condition wise,plus the fact of a strange new adult bird ,she decided to throw a P.M.S..day:rolleyes:
Rio had a super fast chase down through a small copse,in and out the trees (i luv it!!)..she hit a coney up the ass and i saw em dissapear..as i got there,there was a 10 ft drop..she had hit it off the edge and just as i stopped me self going over.:roll: i saw her continue the flight..but to no avail..back to the fist..****ed..and belive,i feel..when she is ****ed!!....
Some more chases followed with the male doing top in the wind ,wich was getting worse,..
Rio left the fist after a rabbit flushed by Lil..doubled off to my side and put the 'wings' on...dead coney....
Next up was the male and with a good turn of speed and a persistaint chase against the wind..number two in the bag :supz:
We decided that would do as thewind was getting stronger,gusting,and felt like rain as well,Put the dog in to the patch again and a rabbit bolted..i slipped Rio..somehow one of her jesses had caught..she couldnt go..she swung back up,i managed to free her and threw her off...but the rabbit had a good 60 yrd+ start..she turned on the after burners..and to be honest,its got to be one of the best flights i have seen as she mowed it down as it hit 70yrds..got kicked off..grabbed again..got kicked off again transfering from ass to head.and finally getting blown off by a guster as she went for a third bind....got her back and fed her up..she deserved her reward.very proud of her tonight...cheers lads..top bombing...:supz:

While gaz is in the states at NAFA i,m going to be flying RIO for him,I took her out this afternoon to do some recalls,which turn into two pheasant slips and two rabbit slips lol.

the rabbit slips werent much to write about but the last cock bird slip was pretty good,I was walking through some nettles looking for rabbits when I spotted the PH, it flushed as soon as stopped walking,RIO came off the fist like a rocket and both birds went steaming off across the field,RIO matched him wing beat for wing beat,the distance never got larger or smaller between them the whole way across the field,then I lost sight of them both as they flew over the nearest hedge some 150 yards away,me and lil went to look for her and found another 150 yards away in a tree above a bramble bush,i,m guessing thats where the ph was but he deserved to get away and I didnt try to reflush him.

GAZ when you get back from NAFA,let rio go at anything that moves dude,

I had a great afternoon with her today.

The first slip was on a woodcock that she only just missed on the rise and it took her a good 500 yards without her pulling off at all,it was amazing to watch mate.

second slip was on a snipe that she flew well over 500 yards,she missed it again but the twists and turns she put in on it over that distance was something that had to be seen to be believed,when I found her after that slip, she was in a tree about 30 feet up above the river,she wouldnt come down, then put a stoop into the river after a moorhen only just missed it too,but I bet your thinking good as I know you dont like hunting them lol.

2 more cracking flights today gaz,1 on a cock pheasant that lil flushed ,it took her right out of sight again I was sure I was going to find on him,but I didnt :cry:.
flight 2 was on a rabbit that rio caught and while I was sorting the dog out as she flush it down by the lane that goes up to the wood,rio let it go:cry::cry:.

The cold weather caught me out last night and both birds were alittle low today and the recalls were brill,I couldnt get away from rio went doing recalls and jumps at the end of are hunting session.

i,ll get something with her while your away i,m sure of it ,well I bloody better as i,m hunting her as hard as i,m hunting nell.

2 good slips again today gaz,both on hares.

The first was flushed by lil:supz:rio bated but I didnt see it until late and it had a 30 yard head start, but that didnt matter at all you know how fast she is,I,m running down the field like a ginger criple:P lol,didnt get there in time,rio set her wings and came up behind him, bound straight to his head,none of this ass binding ****** lol,it looked like she stoped it for second then they both went straight up in the air about 4 or 5 feet and when they both hit the ground again rio lost her grip on him and he run up the field like a steam train,rio then swung up into the nearest tree,I stop run when I saw her hit the tree,she was about 100 yards away, I put my fist up and caller her and she came straight to me,what an amazing recall it was ,I was well happy with that mate.

she pulled off the next one soon after leaving the fist as it got up along way ahead of us.

Well gaz I took rio on to marcus,s permission this afternoon,we had 3 great slips

The 1st was on another hare,that had a 80 yd head start on rio but she made the hare look stupid in terms of speed,but it just out turned her and she missed it on the 3rd attempt at binding to it about 150yds from us,with an instant recall to the fist.

The 2nd slip was at a lesser black backed gull,she wanted to take it as it was coming into land,but I held her back and sliped her as it landed about 70 yds out,she stayed low and didnt miss a beat,a few yards from the gull it spotted rio and called out at her as she was about to hit it ,it was now about 3 or 4 feet off the ground,rio spread her tail as she was about to strike the gull and it shut its wings dropped about a foot and rio just shot straight over the top of it and then proceeded to glide to a near by tree,this happened last year with a few crows that she missed.

The 3rd slip was at a cock pheasant that we flushed up hill,I held her back again as it headed towards the shoot and there was alot of shooting going on,as it happens the pheasant put into a small bush on the hillside and we re-flushed him from there,rio match him in speed until they both crossed the stream at the bottom of the field and this is where the pheasant started climbing,rio stayed low hoping to take him from underneath as he entered a tree plantation,but when we got there and found her she had missed him and was sat in a tree,I couldn,t find the pheasant again after this,the recall was instant again.

Its very interesting to compare an intermewed hawk to a first year brown one pete,I cant wait until nell has her adult plumage to see if the speed is there,like it is with rio,they defo have better feathers in there second season,I,m defo up for being a telemetry tester,as it would get a good work out;-).

As for giving rio back i,m looking forward to it as its killing me flying two goshawks every day,lol.

After all the bad weather we,ve had lately rio has been just feed on the fist or jumped to the fist for fittness.

yesterday I lost her after a long slip on a cock pheasant,but once located I got her back on the fist and got her home.

Today was better than yesterday,only one slip today,I was walking down a steep field when lil flushed a large hare to my left,rio was off after it and hitting it side on at the shoulder,I started running as soon as she left the fist I was sure this one was going to be in the bag,but some how it turned its self around and was pointing downhill and it kicked her off,she try to rebinded BUT she just couldnt get a good foot to him,after letting it go again she swung up into a tree,and the hare just slipped away as they so often do,I called her down and went home.

ere GAZ i,m gunna get one with her before you come home from NAFA mate lol:evil::evil:.

Well after nearly two weeks of slip after slip with no kills,rio was bang on weight this afternoon,and she pulled out all the stops,

I walked up to the first lot of cover crop on the shoot behind my house,after having a hen pheasant up there with nell in the morning and having 4 another slips I knew there was a good chance of another few flights.

I worked lil throught the first lot of cover and she flushed a cock bird right in front of me and for some reason I just didnt let her go,but no sooner was that bird out of sight another run out of the hedge to my left,straight out into an open field,I sliped rio,but this ******er knew the score and was on the wing as soon as he heard the bells,I saw about 70 or 80 yrds of the flight,rio was right on his ass after only a few seconds,they both disapeared over a hedge to my right,I was soon running as fast as I could to see where they had ended up,I found them no more than 10 feet away from where nell had killed this morning.

I let her plume and have a small reward,then pick her up off the kill,that was text book,I was bloody pleased with just that,but the best was yet come LOL.

We carried on around the first pen and saw another cock bird that ran down the far side of the pen,I sent lil in every bit of cover that was down the side of the pen,nothing,god knows where he went I thought,so I started walking back up to the top of the field so I could get lil to work a large open curved bank to the next peice of cover,this bank is about 300yrds wide,I sent lil off and she started to quarter the bank from right to left,and it wasn,t long before she hit a good sent,I was walking the bank about 50ft above her when a hare broke,he started running up hill as we all know thats there best way of escape,As soon as he broke RIO left the fist with more speed than she flew the previous cock bird,It might have looked faster to me as she set off downhill,the hare was about 60yrds out to the left of me and about 50ft down the bank in line with lil.rio interscepted the hare as it came inline with me on the hill hitting in the rear end,as I was running in I could see her stretching one leg out to nail him in the head and as she did the hare kicked out and I thought that she was going to lose him BUT she held him until I got there to help out,I despatch him as qiickly as I could, as I hate the sound they make when there caught,rio was left the plume and have a very very well earned reward off the hare.

RIO was up next,GAZ stayed where I sliped nell from as not to put up any more rabbits as this field is crawling with them.so I got back into the field where gaz and rio were waiting for me,I told him nell was clipped up and he unclipped rio and start off across the field at and angle,GAZ was 50 ft off where I was stand and a good 80yards up from the bottom of the field when a rabbit broke right at gaz,s feet,even though rio was off the fist as soon as the rabbit broke she still didnt catch it until it was a good 50 yards away from gaz,but that rabbit had no intention of being caught but rio soon put pay to that ideahttp://www.falconryforum.co.uk/images/smilies/icon_evil.gif.

nell was up again,I unclipped but kept the jesses firmly between my fingers,As gaz start walking back up the field towards me, another rabbit bolted from the grass 6ft from where rio had just killed, nell didnt bate at it because gaz,s dog was between her and the rabbit(nell will fly feather over lil but not fur at the moment but i,m working on that lol),but rio bated so hard off the fist at it that she ripped the flying jess clean of the the clip,and was off after her second rabbit on the 3rd slip,after only 15 mintues of hawking,gaz kept saying sorry about slipping out of turn, but I wasnt listening as I wasn,t listening as I was to busy cheering RIO on as she missed the first atempt at binding,I then watched her start her attack from the ground, this time she didnt miss and took her second rabbit in great style 40 yards away under a hedge, On top of a bank,over looking the road that we had the van parked up on.
plenty more slips were had by both hawks but no more game was brought to the bag.

Needed those rabbits today for a couple of special gals...;-)..R.I.P.

Well,had to get the poor cow out today,,she was going stir crazy!!& one thing you dont want out your back is Rio in a ****..shes a bitch
Anyways walked around for 40 mins and Lil put out a cock pheasant..i launched Rio,and she powered off.....down f#####g wards....hadnt unclipped her..what a tit:!:...got her back up and went to look but no joy..he had done one:evil:...had a rabbit slip not long after and found her in a hedge with a footfull of fur...why she didnt hold i dont know.....another rabbit slip saw her smash through a small bush/hedge..strange that it took about 5mins to find her..had to track her...she was in the next small horse field on her quarry..mantled right over and not moving...frigging squirrel:!:
got me hand in and pushed hard on its chest..didnt want her to move her grip...got her picked up with rabbit and home..checked her feet and legs..all ok.. :confused:..alls well that ends well.....

I,m writing GAZ,s diary up tonight as is pc is up the swany at the moment.

well we went out on my premission today for a quick walk around,the wind start to get up abit which rio wasnt that keen on so we made are way to a more sheltered patch of land,which pay off as all the quarry had the same idea lol.

Slip 1

Rio came off the fist,through a barbed wired fence,and slammed into a cock bird in some deep cover,gaz tried his best to get there to help her out but couldnt and she couldnt have got a good grip on him and a he got away.

Slip 2

We were working a ruff grass field where the rabbits lie up under big tumps of grass,lil was working the field back towards us,as the wind was blowing straight at her,she circled one tump a few times,then when solid on point YES ON POINT(lil,s a spaniel), then she flushed the rabbit that shot out of the grass and started up hill towards a set of holes in a bank at the top of the field,the rabbit had a good 30yrds on rio,but she made short work of the rabbit, that was taken 60yrds from us,and he had a good 40 yrds to go,before he got to the burry,so he didnt stand a chance really.

Slip 3

We spotted some ducks on the river,rio flew them hard BUT the slip was as good as it should have been because I flush them off the river to soon,when gaz was out of position,it look like he could see them from where I was but I was wrong lol.

Well,finally got out again with Rio,..cold and sunny...purrrfecttt:supz:
First slip a rabbit got up to Jase's right and after 40 yrds Rio hit it but got caught up hitting a blackthorn bush,both were off again ,the cony going hell for leather across the ground towards the hedges..another good 60 yrds later,.Rio put the gas on and bang..both feet in the head..one hallux through the eye..her speed is stunning to watch...

Next chase was a quick,fast explosive chase with Rio hitting hard just as the cony made the hedgeline and a steep enbankment..rabbit squealed as Rio made contact but the tumble down over gave it its freedom...:evil:

Next was a classic Rio stealth attack as i let her go a good 120 yrds away from the coney,..it switched on at the last minuate and dodged her using a lone small tree,he ran around it grounding Rio and was laughing as he took off again..mistake..Rio had poured on the gas after getting up again and slammed it to the ground..:supz:

Her last attack was another stealth job,this time from around 70yrds(love watching her glide in,and then hitting the burners)..she just missed...
Fed her up and we headed for home...2 happy austringers and 2 happy Gosses..
Out at 1 pm..back at 3.15pm....

3 rabbits..1 partridge..cracking flights..cracking company..

Well Rio was fed up the other day and left yesterday with the intention of hunting her hard today..but work ****** that..again..:twisted:..

Out for a couple of hrs this afternoon...2 rabbits then put her away...
First rabbit was a 10 foot mugger..
Second rabbit was a 80 yrd stealth Rio special..
i slipped her at a coney i saw in the corner..she headed straight down the field by the way she flying i knew it was a stealth job(she does two pumps,then glides till she is spotted,then pours on the gas..).she hit the running rabbit off the top of a bank and swung up..before slamming down..i lost sight at that point..as i ran down i realised,as i heard a car coming,:roll:that the rabbit had to have landed in the road...i smashed down through,slashing me hand..and ass!!!..on barbed wire fence,(brush pants are now ******:!:).got to the road ..no sign...heard screaming..she got it in the next field across the road...hallux through the eye again and claret pumping..:finga:totall control...picked her up..fed her up on the fist and put her away...had to help a northerner out:mrgreen:

spent the day with H this afternoon. she was a little late getting down to meet me ..but we still had time to fly... she flew the two males and I put my female h. , playing hell to get these birds to drop wieght.
anyways flew my redtail late with an area that probably held 15 rabbits..
huge wood pile that prevented us from any success.. we will know how to work the slip next time.. put the bird up due to light
the end we put the dogs my blue heeler and kiesh (sp?) is that how you spell it . I dont know... chased the rabbits out of the wood pile .. good work for the dogs.

I took her out this afternoon when the weather eased off.

It did feel strange going out hunting with out nell but I had to concentrate on what I was doing with RIO and to be honest it took my mind off what has happened.

I when out on the shoot behind my house just becase its safe there and I know the land really well.

Poppy flushed what I thought was going to be a pheasant, so I slipped rio as soon as I heard something come out of the hedge,she was off the fist like a shot,then a ****ing fox came running out with poppy right up its ass,this was all I needed , but RIO pulled off and swung into a tree, the recall was ok from 60 ft tree.

Next slip was on a brown hare that she only just missed in a small copse after a 150 yrds tail chase across an open field,If had my eyes open she and slipped her sooner, she would have got it out in the open field:roll:.

Poppy then flushed a deer that rio was gagging to bind to lol, but then just seconds later poppy flushed a cock PH, RIO was off after him like a shot, and matched him for speed over the first field, then over a hedge and down into the valley and out of sight.

The first field is well over 250 yrds wide, I track her down close to the duck pond where I found NELL a few weeks ago on the cock PH flight that she flew out of sight in the fog,RIO missed this cock and was marking him in a bramble,poppy reflushed but the cock bird flew over the river and straight out over some duck in a neighbour,s small holding, so the reflush wasn,t flown.

12th jan 08.

kills 1,2 & 3 with me, but her 29,30 & 31 bunny of her season.

After a short walk round a steep field that fail to give up any rabbits to be slipped at,Me and gaz decided to get the ferrets out and work a set of hole that lined an old pond thats now empty,The ferret was in, just a few minutes past when he bolted the first rabbit,I was stood above the holes which is the norm on a set of holes like this but as it turns out this time it wasn,t a great move, RIO came off the fist in her usually style flat out with not a care in the world, The rabbit made a fence 40ft from the hole and RIO collected it at mach 3, But it still didn,t stop her and she was still in the chase and ended up taking the rabbit a further 60ft away in a small paddock.

The next set produced the next kill,the rabbit showed its head from the hole switching RIO on, but she stayed frozen still on the glove until the rabbit decided to make a break,RIO missed the rabbit just as it left the hole hitting a small step just outside, then having to push off the floor to carry on the flight, the rabbit bolted through a bramble bush that RIO had to climb over to get back on terms with the rabbit, which she did with breath taking speed.

The 3rd slip was the best one,From the top of the hill where pikey pete,s poison Ivy took her 200 yrds raw power rabbit from a few weeks ago, I spotted 3 rabbits at the bottom of the field,So gaz and lil slowly worked the cover on the left of the of the field to where these rabbit had just retreated, but two of them broke cover to a set of holes at the bottom, but I couldn,t slip as there was dog walkers on a footpath across the bottom of the field, when all was clear we carried on, lil working like a demon, but the rabbits didn,t bolt into the open field like we were hoping,instead headed for cover in the rushes, So I legged it over to the cover and positioned myself over GAZ and lil futher up the field,This produced the slip we were looking for, With the rabbit breaking to the right of me, RIO BATED, I didn,t see the rabbit and just let her go hoping that she had, Guess what she had and what a slip it was,she went the left hand side of a 10ft high bramble hedge straight off the fist, with rabbit heading out across the open hill,the twists and turns were something else to watch, And the flight ended with RIO taking her 3rd rabbit of the day, with one foot in his ass and the other locked to his head a good 120yrds from the slipping point.

I,d just like to thank GAZ for working the ferrets and lil today,what a cracking team lol:wink:.

I had abit of fun today with rio, after yesterdays scare with some power lines today was alot better.

I,m walking out a field of short cover,I was on the phone to pikey pete when 3 grey partridge broke from the hedge,I told pete and I was off the phone,
me and poppy walked down the hedge to where they had put in and sure enough 15 or 20ft from the put in point they all broke , one going right the other left and one straight on, RIO came off the fist after the down wind slip on the front bird.
After dumping its last load in flight before getting up to full speed, now the pursuit was on, RIO had the advanage with the wind behind her and kept the her quarry very close until I lost sight of the pair of them a 150yrds away passing into the next field.
I found her in a small tree marking something down, I was hoping it was going to be the grey, I got her back on the fist for the reflush, As I got there I saw some movement, It shot under an old wing of a car that was dumped in the hedge, As it turns out what was under the car wing was grey BUT it wasn,t a partridge, it was a tree rat , i,m so glad I got her out of the tree first, So was GAZ when I told what happened FFEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW LOL http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif .

I walked for bloody mile to get this kill today, after seeing ducks on flooded fields, pheasants everywhere, even rabbits out in the open running around on land where don,t normally see them.

poppy flushed the rabbit she killed, very short slip 40 yrds ish,up the side of the batch where nell killed her 69th kill.

No quarry was brought to the bag today by rio,but she had 3 great slips.

Slip1.

A hare broke at the bottom of the hill rio came off the off like a rocket, the flight was in full view of everyone, it was at least 250 yrds long but she missed him on the back side of a large hedge as he jinked into cover.

Slip 2.

We were working out the big pen on the shoot behind my house when lilly push out a cock bird that made good its escape around the wire fence of pen, as lil carried on working the holly that him was under, when we caught up the with him and lil flushed the pheasant,rio the fist in a staright line as the pheasant arced out to my right, she was trying to cut him off,BUT she collected the pen wire at full speed( my whole season flash before my eye:evil::cry:)but she was up straight away and over the fence and in hot pursuit of the pheasant,as I started off to go and get her I saw the cock putting in a field away,I got to her and she was just fly up into a tree from the bramble,she,d lost her pheasant to cover:cry:, a real shame as it was the hardest i,ve seen her fly feather for a few days.

Just after the pheasant slip and on the way home another hare broke from his form down a very muddy field,the hare took a left turn around a small copse,rio flew straight through hoping to cut the hare off i,m guessing,I found in a tree a few minutes later, recall her to the fist,croped her up and took her home,ready to take wez,s goldie out.

24th jan 08.

I only had one slip today and that was on a hare and a bloody big one too,
I was walking through a large open field with the cover only 6 to 8 inches deep, the field is on a slope so I decided to walk straight through the middle,I,d got half way through the field when the hare got up about 15ft to my right, I saw the hare break at the same time as RIO left the fist,And I already had the jesses free in my hand in the hope of this exact flight.
I,m running as fast as I could the second shes off the fist, rio binds to the hares ass about 25 yrds away and gets dragged a further 5yrds before what looked like her transferring a foot to the hares head,by this time I was well on my way to helping her out,I could here the the hare screaming and RIO had stopped it dead by this time, but as I was running in on them,I was shouting hold it hold it at RIO(like that as going to help lol) but either me shouting or the hare spotting me running in made it kick out and RIO was off after it again and nailed him in the ass again just a few feet away, which turned into RIO getting dragged a good 20yrds before she had to let go because she couldn,t get a foot to its head after trying to do so a few times.
when the hare was free it flattened it down its ears and made good its escape hugging the hedge for the full lenght of the field.
Rio pulled off after a short tail chase,then swung into the a high tree,I waited for her to get her breath back in the tree then recalled to the fist (instantly) sweet end to the days hawking.

kills 5 & 6.

We got to are rabbit premission today,when I thought too myself ***** I didn,t weight her bo**ox, but I knew what I given her the day before and it has been putting her on weight all week so we just when with it and she didn,t let us down.

The ferret was in the first set of holes and gaz had to stay by the holes as my ferret has a habit of going down and just as you walk away she pops up and ****es around,and she did lol.
Well once she was down and stayed in,GAZ just stayed there just incase,A rabbit bolted from behind gaz running at full tilt down the 45 degree field with RIO also at full speed, she hit the rabbit and bowled it over but didn,t get a good bind on it, the coney was up and running again and she nail it a further 30 yrds on right outside its hole,that was one unlucky rabbit.

The next set of holes RIO missed the first rabbit that was bolted and she swung up into a tree,The recall was great in a very strong wind,I got back into position for the next slip, I didn,t have to wait long for the next bunny and she made short work of it flying hard into a strong wind again nailing it about 50 yrds out,I forgot to take pic of this rabbit,so theres only two pics of the first rabbit.

I had walked for miles today to get a kill in the last field before getting home,rio had all ready had 3 other slips at crow(she missed).

But the last one was in a maze field that is about 10" deep in cover at the moment,lil was quartering the field to left and in front of me and the gos,and some how she had boxed a hare in,I spotted the hare from a good 40ft back in thinner cover, and thought it was facing away from me but it turns out that it was facing me and it could see me coming the whole way,I rised RIO as high as I could as I walked in on the hare,I got to about 2ft away from it and RIO still hadnt seen it,but as I took one more step forwards the hare bottled it and ran across the front of me,rio came off the fist a rocket,with the wind in her favour she slammed into the ass of the hare about 30ft from where it bolted,she very quickly transferred her double foot hold on the ass to the head and had it well under controll when I got there.

rio wont be being flown for a few days,because she ate close to a whole moorhen today out reach of me on an island in the middle of the duck pond behind my house,this was the second slip.

The first slip was at 4 ducks on the pond,but they didnt flush and she just passed them and slammed a buzzard out of a tree in temper I think.

9th feb 08

kill 9&10.

I didn,t fly rio yesterday as she was very high in condiction from the moorhen,and even though she made weight today she was still up in condiction and the recall from tree,s was a problem with out the lure with a very large reward on it at close range.:roll:

She killed 2 rabbits this afternoon, 1 was a 60yrd slip the full width of the field.
The 2nd was a rabbit from the same hole that only made it 40yrds,not the fastest rabbit in the world,I guess if he new rio was coming he would have tried alittle harder to get away.

she has provided us with a real learning season full of fast and twisting stoops and thrills,along with her young mate Nell (RIP)sadly no longer with us,but not ever forgotten,has helped to keep my sanity in a year full of,well,s##t really...and thanks to Jase,(sparstheone)for taking the brunt of my moods....gonna sort it all mate,with a little help, by next season....
