Yes, top opening, 3 compartments - centre compartment holds decoy live crow, compartment either side to trap corvids. Made myself, catching dozens through the summer.

I make my own to the Game Conservancy design. Easier with a band saw.

Don't know how you trap maggies down south but I just lifted my traps. I put them out with a crow decoy near a favourite nesting site. The residents come down to drive off the "intruder" and get caught. These are disposed of and another pair move in. And so it goes on until they give up!

Crows this far north are too clever to be caught in a trap baited with anything other than another crow and then they only work during nesting when they are naturally aggressive to any other crow invading the territory. We don't have magpies.

I can take some pics if anyone is interested.

There are two catching compartments (one set, one tripped in pictures) and one compartment for the bait bird. There ought to be two perches in the bait bird compartment, one under cover.

i used to use one when i worked on the farm i found it hard to catch the decoy bird so in the end pulled a maggie out of the nest and hand reared it worked a treat because you have a tame bird in the trap plus he calls all day for food

Just had the Firearms officer round to deliver my Firearms/Shotgun certificates from my house move, He has a larsen at the bottom of his garden and has caught 14 magpies already, the maggie inside is a really good caller, going to get a trap soon and catch some of the little ******s myself.

Outflying, did you make it or buy it?

OutFlying

I made it, it was made up from 3 wire baskets from a shop. I cut off a few extra's, made a wooden frame for the top with the trap doors and tie wrapped them onto the wire section.

Caught dozens of magpies last year and farmer thought it was the bees knees. Haven't seen a magpie round the farm this year but caught 5 adult crows so far - now waiting for the 2005 hatcher's.

The advantage of using vertical bars is that your decoy crow/magpie does less damage to itself on them when bating about rather than chicken or square mesh.

Looks good nd certainly seems to work well too, the farmer wouldn't happen to have a very good shoot on the estate would it, in the Burford area?

Hey guys, don't forget that the only legite reason for trapping corvids is pest control. Some people trap them "cos they don't like them". That's prosecutable.
I trap them to prevent damage to game birds and song birds.

used on a sheep farm for pest control, as a side line also helps the game birds and feds the hawks.

. . . feeds the hawks

On it's own that wouldn't be enough. Guy got prosecuted for shooting starlings in his garden, to feed his hawks. If he'd said they were Shyting on the washing he'd have been ok.

OutFlying

Bill, as I said it is as a side line for the despatched corvids which are fed to the hawks. The primary pest side is the damage to the young lambs and local bird population, but once caught why waste them.

You are right. Chicken mesh is nasty stuff. But the square mesh seems to work OK.

But I like your idea! That's what is called re-cycling! Buying timber and weld mesh is expensive but this year I had a production line going and I am hoping the traps will last a few years.

You meant you TELL them when you shoot trespassers??

I just boil 'em up for the dogs and say nothing. Mind you, I have to be quick to think up a reason why the odd human skull is rolling around in the kennels...
