Hi, I was given a female spar from the local police, she has jesses but no ring on.She was in a very low weight,200g,today she is 235.I think her full weight will be 260g.Which flying weight should I expect?Do you recomend me to fly her to the fist or lure?Which prey can I get her to take if she was caught as a passage? She is really nice bird and very very calm, but she probably wasnt flown.I would like to hunt magpies and doves with her.
Looking forward to your answers:yawinkle:

I personally would be calling her to the fist and would be looking to hunt Magpies with her if they are plentifull where you are. Have seen some great flights at Magpie. taken a few partridge with my spar and a lot of feral pigeons. I am now trying to get her switched on to Magpies
U can fly her on anything, what they catch in the wild! Maybe for magpies u will need a few baggies or if u like to catch small birds than she will probably carrying them, so try her at first on a small bird tied on a short rope to see how she reacts with a smaller bird what she can carry....

I know that she will try to carry small birds.for this reason I want to hunt bigger prey;but i dont know,if i get to it...We will see:cool:

Not sure what others do by I do both. Much better on long distant recalls with the lure. Also if she is a bit 'fat' she responds better to the lure.

Isn't that really hard work, I mean harder work than good lure practice with longwings usually is? With spars and accipiters generally being so manouvreable I mean? I'd expect them to just turn quickly and grab it. But hey, what do I know!

Agree with Ben C. Worth doing both without a doubt. At least if she ignores the fist, she might come down to the lure.

The spar that I am working on at the moment came out of the mews at 276g. Today she was 218g and still too high. I am expecting her to fly at about 200g.....Just an example, they are all different of course.

The lure is usually used just for recall with accipiters. They will not stoop to the lure like a long wing.

Thx for your answers boys,I will try the fist at first.Today she was 240g,i dont know,if I should bring her in fat weight at first,or start to fly imediately. But this way I dont know what will be her flying weight.Ithink her fat weight must be around 270 g,but if I wait until she reachs it,I will lost a lot of time.what would you do??
Best regards,Kukri
