nobody wants their bird to be pinched, but its a very real risk here in the uk, how about some tips on good security practices?

I have nosey neighbors.
Seriously though one can buy a relatively cheap door alarm system from Do It All for about £20, I think. It run on batteries and all you need to do is arm it after leaving with a hidden switch. If someone enters, it goes OFF! Hopefully the noise will scare them off?

yeah, i saw an article on how to modify a smoke alarm by soldering a pair of wires over the test button connections and connecting them to a second hand courtesy light switch from a scrapyard, which was screwed into the door frame. simple but effective 8)

Or one can rig up those lights that come on with movement too.

that involves running 240v out over the gaqrden, ok if your prepared to do that but them smoke alarms run on a little 9v battery and the noise is piercing!

True, my mews is rather close to the house, so I never thought of that.

I mate also has an electric fence rigged up on his roof for cats. Does not look as bad as it sounds.

I don't even use a lock because I have the same benefits with the neighbours, they start to YAP! And if 'they' want to get in they will.

heres one, when your window cleaner asks about the birds, lie and tell him they are buzzards, its these sort of people who have loose lips in the pub, i told mine that the bird was reared by humans and would go for your eyes if you got to close! hopefully he remembers these points when he's talking to his criminal friends thus detterring any unwanted visits!

How about putting a L.E.D in the mews and only switch it on at night gives the impression that the mews is equipped with an alarm.
By the way good thinking NEHH.

Guys..some of you are too funny!lol..but seriously..security is a must, what ever form it takes(nosey neighbours..a dog that brings u the limb of some would be thief etc) I like the smoke alarm idea, cheap effective, and if you dont know how,u must have a m8 that does!but you would need a bedroom that over looked your mews.If ur b'room is on opp side of house to ur mews,u'd never hear it! Smoke alarm and a movement sensor light will be the minimum for my new mews!

GO to BQ and buy a shed alarm.
This is easy to fit and is so loud it will wake up New york.
It runs on batteries and has contact points that screw to the doors of your mews. Costs about £16.00
Also good on your garage or side gate.
My neighbours grow pot and are useless but i have a american bull dog and a Bullmastiff who patrol the garden for me. My other dog is a terrier and can hear a fly fart two miles away. He is the brains and starts the other two off.
So touch wood i should be alright.

My mews is alarmed with security lights and the garden is enclosed with all gates double locked, and CCTV cameras front and back.
I have a bed of gravel all around the mews which you can't silence when walking on it, no matter how sneaky you try to be, plus 2 very territorial dogs which have free run of the garden when we're out and at night.
The gravel is good, as the dogs have learned that if it makes a noise, it's walkies time, therefore they go and investigate, regardless of where they are in the house at the time. I think a 96lb German Shepherd snarling at the fence may put most off!!
They may get in, but they'll never leave!!!

I do not talk about security of my birds/ dogs or home . most of it is legal, some borderline Odd bits donwrite illegal and hopefully cause any unwanted intruder at the least intense pain, if not injury or even death    nuff said

You missed the post with the best security tip in it!!!
The electric fence!!... sheep netting is bright red, 3ft 6" high ( any of you men fancy climbing over an electric fence that high) it can be powered by a relatively cheap fencer running off a car battery. It keeps nosey neighbours as well as any other unwelcome animals at bay!
Oh.. forgot to say..to be legal you have to stick a warning sign on it to say that if they touch it it hurts!! mine jumps a spark well over an inch and makes a very satisfying crack.. like when next doors cat got too close

Battery operated game camera set up for motion detection. Makes photos or film of the jerk breaking into the mews. I installed one after an animal rights bozo turned my bird loose and I had no hard evidence who it was for prosecution. A visit from Fish & Wildlife scared them from further attempts. I knew who it was, but couldn't prove it. Fortunately found and recovered my bird that afternoon.
I now have a sign posted on the mews door listing the fines and jail time for anyone breaking in or taking feathers. I also have on the sign "This animal is being housed in compliance with federal and state licensing permits and is a flesh eating raptor with no regard for your fingers, eyes or face."

I'm constantly amazed about the generalizations made by some on this forum in regards to occupation, ethnicity, geographic location.

..... but it's still good advice.
Strangely, he's not the only one on here to publish his full postcode.
I warned someone else a month ago & 2 HH were stolen in the same district this week.
The first rule of security is never discuss it! (Nick Fox).
The second rule is never publish your postcode. (Lascelles, GazCross & Himiko. ;-) )

Nor will he keep one.
Living in that climate (numerous thieves) I would never devulge location. I live in an entirely different climate and have advertising of my raptor business and phone number on my vehicle. I have no aninimity as to the fact I have birds or most in this area know what I do. But I still have "things" in place to deal with the unscruplious.
Shame on them the first time. Shame on me if after that knowledge.

You guys need to gather up a bunch of those aggressive face grabbing HH and put them in a well advertised location and let the fools do their thing. There are too many displays out there with stone tame birds that the public gets to pet.
