while we are on the subject of health, i have noticed during this years moult my hen harris seem to sneeze quite a lot, she is in good health and eating plenty, just wandering if it is caused by dead skin particles causing her to sneese during long preening periods...intrested to know if other peoples birds do this, it is not exessive snezing, maybe 4-5 times a day

if your feeding her beef/steak leave out the pepper! could be a combination pollen/dust/skin particles but if shes behaving oddly or shows any other symptoms, runny cere, slitty eyes then a quick trip down to the vets wouldnt go amiss

my female harris does this sometimes to, but like you she is in good health, eating lots. I think nothing of it though

back to my pigeon days again guys(sorry) when each fether is cast a new one replaces it(nowt new there)when the new one grows its in a sheath the sheath breaks open as the feather grows,as it grows and dries theres a powdery residue which can cause the bird to sneeze, cirtainly with pigeons it does but we could have 10 to 40 birds ocupying a section of the loft which equates to a lot of powder which is actualy visible, and is thought to cause broncial complaints to pigeon fanciers,if theres no sign of ill health then dont worry.

Cheers for the advice, i will put it down to all the dead skin, i think a bit of head and shoulders in her bath should do the trick..

People who double post the same message should be penalised, this is cheating and is only done to increase posts...they should have 10 post deducted...or even relegated to a chick :D :D

why not add some radox while were there

double posts! you"ve got to realise mate that all this is pretty new to me,
i edited the first to read condition feathers instead of moult but some how submited twice.as for the bath salts"NE" a company related to radox actualy marketed the stuff we used to use,it realy did the birds good,i"ll be using it with my bird so i"ll keep you posted.as for bleeding,i have a booklet on basic first aid which sugests and i quote"for copious pin point bleeding,i.e broken tallon or heamorage a cotton bud weted and diped in pottasium permanganate crystals then applied gently to the point of bleeding to stem the flow, however this should not be applied to open wounds, open wounds should be treated with antiseptic to stop infection(pevidene is what i have)but there are others as good, after which nu gel should be applied to aid the healing process,i must stress that this booklet is a guide only and if in any doupt what so-ever the vet should be called.

thats the stuff,it's also the stuff the dentist uses to swill you're mouth, the purple liquid is diluted crystals,to stem the blood flow from the removed tooth.

I always carry styptic powder which reminds me I need to get hold of some more as I used my last lot the other week  .

But pressure and elevation and drive like a loony to your nearest Avian Vet and Pray!
