Hi all,
I am in the process of making a cadge for my Saker. I have looked at the Ben Long ones etc. and although very nice AND expensive for what they are, I decided to make my own. (I am a cabinet maker by trade but it is very easy to do!).
I have bought 4 stair rails and a peice of pine 100X18mm 2.4m long.
I will cut the stair rails about 420mm at the end of the turning and the mortice the pine rail about 15mm deep. Glue and pin in place, (from the inner face) and repeat. After making the 2 ends, cut 2 more peices of the rail to join them up and varnish. Hay presto a cadge already to have astro turf or leather fitted. Top off the top with acorn type finials or drawer handles and a nice useful bit of kit is made.
As the stair rails have 2 square ends you could make up another one with the off cuts. Parts cost me £22 in Homebase, B&Q might be cheaper.
Clive.ps. when done I'll put pictures up.
All that is needed now is the astro to be fitted and a car cadge is complete.
excuse the colour but it is the shed paint. If I'd used oak or ash I would have varnished it.

Does anyone else use a cadge or do you use a 'veri-kennel' type box.

Yes, I use a cadge but it's nowhere near as posh as yours because I'm not a cabinet maker (and I will NOT be putting pictures on here!!).
One thing I'd be wary of in your design is stability as it looks a bit high and top-heavy to me.
Are you going to have it firmly secured in your vehicle, if so, it might be O.K?
If it's any help to you I can send you dimensions of the one I use for my female Saker (17 weeks, so it must be about the same age as yours?).

I might still cut the turnings off but it is the first attempt. If I can get pretty much the same again but in oak, it will be heavier. and look more stunning.
The main idea was to show people how easy making something like a cadge is. Feel free to post up your dimensions, thats what this forum is about.

The one I'm using is about 20 inches square by 11 inches deep (which gives plenty of clearance for the bird's tail). It has solid sides and a base.
Have to agree with you that making it from oak would be nice!
Anyway, hope that helps.
P.S. Let us know how you're getting on with your Saker.

It's ideal for Loco; while the weather was cold and wet, he stayed on that at night in my room.
I only made it to show how easy it is. I ended up putting rubber on thebar.

piece of p### to make....................as it's pine there's no weight in it, so no good for a large bird unless I was to fit spikes into the legs!!!!!!!!
(excuse the state of the tool shed at the back, been too busy flying just lately to paint it!!!)
