View Full Version : Towing Points

Has anyone experimented with adjusting the towing point on their kite?
Does raising or lowering the towing point on the kite make it pull up closer or move farther down from the vertical position, meaning does the angle on the line increase or decrease with an adjustment of the towing point?
If you have tried this, how much did you adjust it up or down, and how much difference did it make?

Depending on the balance of the kite.. somthing i know very little about.
it will change the final pitch.
The best way to play with this if you have a foil fin running under the kite
(if the tow point is cloth, rather than a slip string) is to run a line from the nose to the tail & run a slip ring from the main line to this..
this way you can addjust it a fraction in a few seconds.
weight of line & type of line used will effect the drag & cause the kite to sag if it were.
i use the kite for different results, looking at it as a fitness tool rather than height.
I pitch the kite to 200ft & then slip the GyrPeregrine or harris hawks from down wind for them to fly at a constant angle
with trails you can work out the distance nicely to reach desired effect
Just make adjustments small & make a mental note of the wind conditions at the time.
Remember that no matter what the wind is doing round your ears.. its different 60ft above them.
best bet is to look on th web for a kite shop in the arse end of no where
some nerd with plenty of time to chat on the phone about the thing he loves best.. get him on a roll & rinse his brain.
he will know as much about kite pitch as we do about our ow birds.

Hi there Parahawker and welcome to the house of FUN! Love to see some pitures of your Gyr/Pere sometime? What weight does he fly at?

Hi there I have sold a kite for over 10 years for this purpose and actually has an adjustable 'bridle' so in effect you can alter the 'attack' or 'pitch' of the kite. However there are various problems with this, amongst them being what may be a perefect angle at ground level in an 8 mph gorund wind speed will be a nightmare ar 1500' when the wind speed is probably 15-20 mph.( I have had apprentices draged across fields whilst standing on the metal foot plate of the winch, & winch alone weighs over 50lb<VBG>) Another problem is that that you have a fairly small choice of positions that are efective due to the remainder of the keel effectively stalling or conversely pulling too hard on the kite. We tried completely replacing the keel with the bridle , but this made the kite so unstable it was almost unflyable. (incidentally if anyone wants cannon releases we sell them but they are hellish expensive) Hope this helps

No Problems although I am a little concerned , having read the rules, I don't want to 'blow ' our own trumpet too much;0)
