View Full Version : Optimum frequency

I did notice that different frequencies have been discussed in other posts, but I started a new thread, so that it didn't get lost in the multitude of Q's & A's in other ones.
I only have a very basic knowledge of AM / FM & frequencies etc, but I do know that some travel further or clearer and certain conditions affect some more that others, but which ones are which?
What would be the best all round frequency that is currently available as a telemetry system for use in the UK? By the best, I mean the best 'all round' performer rather than best because it's the only one that is legal etc....

The lower the frequency, the more it can bend over hills.

So in theory 173 will creep more over a hill than 216, but in reality there is not much in it. 216 however sees less interference from police, trains, other wildlife tracking systems, like trout and salmon people and radio control planes.

418 Mhz will not compare to those two in hilly terrain.

this is a good question and HM is quite right there with the old lower frequency thing. modern telemetry systems are all pretty good these days, i think the question you should be asking is which will be the best for MY bird(s) if your flying falcons then 176/216 is the gear if its Gosses i'd go for either bottom end of the 216market/top end of the 418.
if your flying broadwings then i'd just get a basic 418 even these are good for up to 8 miles in most conditions

Remember that 173 the only legal freq..
so people from the UK SHOULD NOT be talking about the option of 216

418 MHZ is legal in the uk

And 173 is NOT!

I may or may not be correct on this point, so I will readily stand corrected.
I am sure that although there are several (maybe two or three) 'Approved' frequencies/systems, this does not necessarily make them legal.
I am reliably informed that 'approved' does not yet mean legal, rather it means something on the lines of, 'yes we approve of this frequency and the technical specs of the equipment, but we have not yet passed the legislation to make it legal, so it is therfore still illegal to use'.
I am also reasonably reliably informed that the only 100% legal system available in the UK is the 'FINNTRACKER' which operates on 433mhz.
Like I said, I am willing to stand corrected, but I have no reason to disbelieve the information given to me.

Talking about the Finntracker - has anyone any experience of it?

Yup.......what would you like to know?

I got one after I lost my harris but didn't use it much.
Then used it on a gos for a while and found it difficult to pin point wher he was. always managed it but it just seems to lack good directional ability.
I haven't had experiance with other telemetry so have nothing to compare it to.

How do they compare to others?

The Late Lord Lucan

I have found that it compares a lot better than people give it credit for. I must say that it needs a bit more practice in using it than some of the others. I always use it on manual, rather than automatic and find it a lot better this way. In my experience, I would second the comments further up the list and say it was suitable for most birds except big, long distance ranging falcons. Wasn't a problem for me until recently. My Peregrine has now decided she would like disappear for unknown reasons and she can cover a big distance in a short time. I'm probably going to change to the marshall with the powermax transmitters.

Hey Lucky I am about to get a PowerMax from the States too. Do you want to share the postage?

The Late Lord Lucan
18-10-2004, 11:10 AM
I was just having a tot up on the prices, the current prices on the marshall website convert to approx £520 for a 5ch receiver & a 3volt powermax.
I'm not sure what the crack is on 'TAX' or postage from the states, but I would have thought that it may have been just as cost effective (going by the prices you pasted up on one of the other posts) and certainly easier to get it from garlands?
I'll ask my bro in law, hes a bit of an expert in dealing to & from other countries, I'll see what he thinks might be best.

Also, I happen to know the Captain on a ship that sails quite frequently from the US to the UK, so that may be another option......
They have just left this morning on their return trip, so I guess they'll be back around January.

For a Powermax transmitter from Marshall is $245 and from Northwoods it is $281.95

Thanks for pointing that out 'LUCKY'

Just got an email back from Marshall and they will not sell to the UK at all.
Abit of business here for our friends in the USA, I think?

Dave and Carol, get on the case! Bet we get a MUCH better deal from Custom Falconry than Northwoods?

its still a bit on the expensive side HM, is it really that much better than the stuff available here?

you can send a lot of stuff to the uk for the buyer "to export"
another nice little loophole :D

Other companies sell marshalls equipment because they buy from Garlands but believe me Garlands charge them nearly the same price as they do to an individual.

They buy it off Garlands and get a 5% discount BUT for bulk.

Welcome to the forum James. Do you fly any birds yet?
