My Peregrine X Prarie tiercel took a hen bird yesterday in cover, First kill for this little bird and he only weighs 1lb 2 1/2oz, but he has plenty of prarie attitude.

Trinity takes more pheasant then I would like. She has taken one, maybe two on the wing but overall she's killed 5 cock and 3 hen pheasants. She has very good acuracy with her feet and can bind onto more or less anything.

Sniper
02-11-2004, 12:00 PM
Darren, as for cooking one, well i just put mine in the oven as you would a chicken, but remember to baste it constantly as pheasant is very dry, tip:-smear butter over your birds breasts (the pheasants that is) and you'll never have a dry bird..just keep it simple

The method of hanging is to mature the meat to give it more of a gamey flavour, the meat starts to putrify and enhances the flavour but why hang it when its already dead :P

Bryan (HH) has had 3 pheasant and a bunny so far, though he'd rather chase blackbirds at the moment. He managed to pull one or two through the roof of his aviary over the summer, now he's obsessed.

He'll chase a rabbit, then veer off at lightning speed after a bloody blackbird that always manages to show itself at the wrong time.......Men!!!

Bones

first trip out and sky chased phesant like something possesed,it done my head in as i whanted to kill a rabbit first, but on our last 2 trips out she either ignored them totaly or gave a half hearted chase, she's becomming real fit,her legs like tree trunks,(and the bitch has just bit my ear cos she can't have a tit bit) so after a couple more rabbits,i might change tactics and nail some big feathered kriters

Johnny
14-11-2004, 08:18 PM
JIff as im typing here im crying you wxxxxr ,lol
I will have my day im going down milsbons next week hopefully ,ill either catch a rabbit or ring sting ?
All the best
johnny
Do you want to swap birds ,lol

Shaun Byrne
14-11-2004, 08:21 PM
Some may disagree Jiff but if I were you I'd try and get her solidly wedded on wabbits first. I started letting one of my FHH nail Pheasants after a few rabbits and had a real job to get her to go back at fur. This caused me a real problem, as you know, land where you can take feather is a lot harder to come by

Johnny
14-11-2004, 08:21 PM
Thanks ww thats all i need is some nice comments ill send you some rabbits down when flame makes some kills , you could use them to show them your bird so it gets a clue in what to do ? hope it helps ,lol

Darren, as for cooking one, well i just put mine in the oven as you would a chicken, but remember to baste it constantly as pheasant is very dry, tip:-smear butter over your birds breasts (the pheasants that is) and you'll never have a dry bird..just keep it simple

Try working the butter under the skin & 'massaging' it around so you get a layer of butter all over.
Also, try putting the bird upside down in the oven, the juices don't drain out so easily then.......you might have to prop it up.

Recommend that you don't use the method in 'Withnail & I' that they used on the chicken..........

Regards,
Lucky.

Another hen pheasant for the old Gos! Her third this season.

She really was battling to keep hold of them we worked very close in the woods today, so fast short bursts off the fist, she may need her claws sharpening?

my bird has taken a complete dissinterest in phesant, but when we get bored of nailing rabbits,i'll switch the program, and feather only will be the quarry, whats the secret of getting a female harris hot on feather?

Sniper
07-12-2004, 08:27 AM
she should not be disintrested in them, its probably confidence if its a young bird, the more you take her around places where theres a lot of pheasant and familarises its self with them it will not be long before you are running after your bird which is chasing a pheasant for 300 yrds...your going to get very fit believe me

Kornie
08-12-2004, 08:39 PM
yeah and if theres an area thick with pheasants your going to be an athlete! No secret in introducing any quarry jiff, just show the bird it is a potential food source!!

Kevin Massey
09-12-2004, 11:24 PM
jiff........

try and make sure they are cock birds aswell..........she will take the hens no probs, and will also go for the hens first (if there is a choice that is)....it took quite a bit getting jed my male to take cock pheasants...he adoured the hens mind u......

females in my experience ain't that hard to get going on them......its just trying to get them not to look out and out for the easier option (hens).

kev

North East Harris Hawker
10-12-2004, 04:03 AM
this is true, they do seem to prefer the hens if given the choice. maybe the males look a little more intimidating?

Mr Insurance got me a new F810 Fujifilm. Unfortunately that day I forgot to take it.

Hunting has been a big fat ZERO, we went out ferreting and bolted one which Kelly's bird slipped on and chased really well, unforunately it was the only slip of the day.

We really are battling to find rabbits here as Myxy has wiped them out.
