Last Saturday Jim Guy and I drove all the way to Laredo and covered south Texas in hopes of trapping a harris for him and a redtail for me. To make a long story short we struck out. Yesterday Carl Beckerson and I drove 156 miles to temple and back hunting a red tail. We started in Hutto and made a large circle. Once we were back in Hutto we had seen 18 hags and not even 1 passage. On the way home we spotted a passage about 2 miles from the house. We threw a BC and she came down but was bumped off by a car. She went about 3 poles down so we threw a second trap. It took her 30 minutes to decide to go down a second time and was caught. Jim Guy, my sponser had decided I was to take the first healthy hawk I got and quit looking for a giant as the passage birds are in short supply here. This girl was healthy, had great feathers and large feet. She was not very big and weighed in at 39 oz. I am however very glad to now be manning a bird. She calmed very fast yesterday afternoon and ate today at about 2:00 so I am on my way.

At 46 ounces, I would think it's safe to say it's a female....Congrats and good luck with the training! Keep us posted on her progress.

By the way....those arent traditional jesses on your bird are they? with out a swivel...... and hooked with a dog leash?? Sorry, had to say something as it's in the picture.......also your asking to get footed by the way your handling the bird there!.....It's still in shock and will eventually nail you when it figures this whole thing out....Just a word of warning as I have been there done that.......They will lull you into a false sence of security...Good looking bird though! :supz:

Your right ! I'ts a temp set I ues to handle new raptors . As a rehab I had to design a set of jesses that is quick and easy to get the birds under control, as for the leash I was totaly unprepared to day of her catch an picked up the leash at the local pet shop, and geting footed goes with out saying , it happens so much with what I do I wouldnt expect other wise!
Getting footed by a new RT is nothing , wait till you slip up with a GHO then you know what the true meaning of FOOTED really is!
Got hit by a RT (rehab) last year , beared the talon to the hilt in the back of my left hand , had to take her to the vet for x-rays , vet thought the bird was bleeding to death! but it was only me. Oh and the bird , the unla's were broken in both wings , but she recovered well !

Well done with the trappings gents. I am looking forward to all that within the next few seasons. Still sorting a few things out, but hope to be there soon. Good luck with the flying.
