Bit early for a diary thread yet, but just though i'd give you a quick insight.
Took up Faith this morn and weighed her, shes up to 2.6lb, but still some room there for a little more on the sharpness side. ( Carols Male up to 1.10 1/2 !!!!!!)
spent the morning manning around the garden, and about 11.30 decided to go for a walk. out the back gat and into the feilds we went. she was a little skitty for a while, wings up, chest out, but after a while she settled down. we walked for miles it seemed and eventually after talking her to boredom we turned for home. on the way back three pheasants flushed nearby, a cock a hen and a white one!!! her reaction was very interesting and she seemed to set herself as she watched them go into the distance.(a good sign me thinks) After this she got a little batey and i was glad to get back home.
put her on weathering lawn for a hour and sprayed her down in the sunshine and she loved it.Took out the male (not sure on the name yet...women!) about 2pm took her up again and sat with her in the sun with some grub on the glove. She looked and looked and even bowed towards it but after an hour nothing so called it a day. her feed was already in the aviary so took her straight in and also put away Carols bird as she had gone to bed (night shift) imediately both birds head down bum up and eating....a good sign again
thts it for now will really only stick posts up when something interesting to tell dont want to bore you all.
Chris
ps cannot manage to get any photos up sorry.

YOU SEEM HAPPY KIDDO! like a kid with a new toy. Well done your missus with the weight....he is really doing well isnt he, I must say, she seems to be doing a really good job with him. Oh ye' your doing alright as well. Have you got them made to the hood yet? Imagine....next time they go out with you and they become a bit 'batey' you could hood her up and stop them......good eh!
Wightwings

ye the males doin well once on the fist he's steady and doesn't get batey. I have hooded Faith but the hood isnt big enough ( she's got a bigger head than i thought) so i need to order a new one. she is fairly steady considering she has only been manned the past couple of days. well pleased.

good day today, sun was shining early and the birds had cast early. weighed em up Faith 2.5 still despite cold night, spirit (that what Carols called her male) 1.9 3/4 down a little.
manned both for a couple of hours then stuck em on manning posts for a couple more.
early afternoon took Faith out for a long walk, got back sat in the sunshine with half a quail on the fist..............................and after half an hour head down bum up feeding  only second day manning and shes on full rations too 8) over the bloody moon i can tell you. finished off the quail so put her away to "find"the rest of her rations waiting for her.
Spirit still didnt want to know but will now feed with you close by so a breakthrough there to.

AINT LIFE GOOD :D
very cold last night and not put heaters in mews yet so at midnight took decision to bring birds into house?!(therm said minus 1 and they were both sat on the gravel shivering  ) they both slept nicely in the bedroom one on either side of bed until this morn. 7.30am Sun shining stuck em out on manning posts, had brecky then manned until 10, went for new heaters, installed then out for a walk.
good two hours or so then back, Faith fed on fist again (still on full rations too :D ) Spirit not interested but he was 1.10 1/2!!!!!??? (fat git  )
put em away and then watched man u tonk the magpies........................................... .......................AINT LIFE GOOD 8)

i know Jiff i've been in and out all night quietly listening at the side of the mews to see if the new heaters are kicking in as they should be
Hi H4wka, they are high level perches the birds are tethered short on. If they bait they immediatley get back on because they cannot go anywhere or "sit" on the ground as they would on bows. also because they are shoulder height the birds feel happier when you are nearby as you are not "over them" We spent a while stnding with them and offering feed off the fist to them. I also like to lay the glove next to them with a titbit on, first day out Faith fed of this glove with me standing next to her on the mobile talking to Sacker sucker, next day (day 2) she fed of the glove with my hand in it! so it seems to work.
the birds are definately happier at the height.

Faith 2.4 1/2 this morn, Spirit 1.10 1/4 (hooded) another very good day, lots off walking and manning. Spirit fed from the fist again and ate like he was starving, three DoC's and a piece of beef never touched the sides.
to top the day off Faith stepped across to the glove about 8-10" (after a lot of hesidance) and finally jumped a good 18" for a good feed up superb so left it there on a good note for them both. they are currently both roosting beside me whilst my son plays hisPS2 behind them.

Faith 2.4 1/2 still staying at a steady weight Spirit 1.10 3/4 ( fat pudding)
introduced the DB and the S lure to them both today. after 2 or 3 mins they both "killed" them and galdly ate the titbits attached. when i say killed it was just that too  Faith gave the DB a couple or more "love taps" but Spirit took great delight in footing the **** out of it.
this afty carried on were we left of yesterday, after some manning. by the end of the session Faith was coming a good 15ft to the fist and hits it like she means it. Its more of an up, across and down flight but its completely new to her so the direct flights are around the corner.
Thought i would see if Spirit would start to step up to the glove, but he's only fed on the fist twice and at that weight did'nt expect much......................WRONG..............i think he had been watching Faith do it closer than i thought. FULL leash instantly  took me a little by surprise. did this 6 or 7 times and changed the leash for the line.......5ft......8ft....10ft................... .........................15ft. everytime hitting the glove hard and really bolting the grub down. after about 10 flights i left it at that as i didnt want to push him too hard ( besides couldnt have him outshining my girl now could i  ). Faith is sooooo relaxed with me around her now its unreal, Spirit is still having his moments and today i got a couple of the HH distain screams at me, but at this stage i am not concerned as its his way of reluctantly starting to expect i am in his space.
again finishing the day off with them both roosting next to me as i type and Matthew (my nipper) sat practicing his guitar.
justa quick point, they are both still on what i would call full rations and as of yet they have only put on weight since arriving and not had to be "starved" will be interesting to see how far into training they will go before i need to nip em back a bit :?:
PS after only 6 days i couldnt be happier with them

Faith 2.5- Spirit 1.10 1/2 (unhooded) so both up on yesterday 1/4 oz
weather crappy and windy so birds inside with me most of day until this afty when we did some more with em.
got faith up to 30ft 3 or 4 times but her responce was a little slow. Spirit was totally uninterested and just did a few short ones for Carol.
Cut em both back a bit on the food (but not much) to take that extra 1/4 off they have both put on to see if that brings em back in line.
Faith is like a little child, she actually chats to me constantly with little squeeks, peeps and chirps.
managed to stick another piccy on my album of carol and Spirit. the link is still not showing but just click the cross it still comes up :D

Hi Darren, lucky enough to have a big garden to train the birds in. (160ft long x 60ft or so wide) nothing but miles of fields outside the back gate either.
i happy with the weight thing at the moment, like i said just nipping em bay that 1/4 oz as they were a little unresponsive yesterday.

Wightwings
19-11-2004, 07:06 PM
Carol can mix it with the best of em she works in a male dominated environment and has a good sense of humor............thats why i "let" her be the boss at home
Its been a total of six full days and one evening so far HM. Back to work on Monday  so the progress will slow a little.
Faith 2.4 1/2 still steady, Spirit 1.11 (hooded) so true weight 1.10 1/2.
another steady day with some manning in the fields and in the garden. Faith coming a good 45ft today time after time after time. the 1/4 oz off from yesterday sharpened her up a little. her flights were instant but lacked that "thump" you would expect from a bird her size hitting the glove. more pleasure flying me thinks so im going to take 1/4 oz more off to see how she reacts.
I cannot complain though after one week, especially as she was 2.2 when taken up out of the aviary!!!!!! :D
Spirit, mmmmm what can i say. interested but not keen i would say a couple of flights up to 25ft but a lot of time spent whistling and shouting him. again he was 1.8 oz out of aviary to he is up at a good weight but im going to nip him back gradully at least 1/2oz off to sharpen his responce.
Now advise please, Faith is like a little kitten for me, very tactile and lots of chatting to me, Spirit on the other hand in showing some aggression, i dont mind that, but the screaming at me has been a little more evident today. not food screaming but the wings out, hackles up in yer face "back off" noise, once when he came into the fist to feed from about 10ft.
in fairness he has had a little less manning than Faith but not that much less. I have never trained birds on full rations before. i normally use the weight method. So i'm just assuming he is a good plump weight, happy within himself, hence why does he need me around. I believe lots of time on the fist will sort him but would like some feedback from any one who has come across this before as i have not.
thanks guys (and gals)
Saker-Clive
19-11-2004, 10:43 PM
WW, can he see you feeding Faith and vice versa? it might be a jealousy thing, if you are spending more time with Faith; Kier hated Zarbu to start with.
Wightwings
19-11-2004, 10:54 PM
good point Clive i do tend to have them both around at the same time.
I have noticed when im with Spirit, you know manning or just generally being around on the posts, Faith peeps and squeeks like a good un??? i even say to her whats up are you jealuos (spelt wrong i think?)
the only thing is the "aggression" for what it is, is aimed at me not her from spirit
Wightwings

Been "working from home" today so managed to do a bit extra with the birds. In truth i've spent the week adjusting the weights a little as both birds have been VERY laid back and uninterested in things apart from a few short flights.
Faith 2.41/4 i had her down to 2.4 yesterday and she was good so nipped her up another 1/4.
Spirit 1.9 1/4. i've got him about an oz lower this week as hes been VERY flighty.
Both birds today were awsome!! Faith first, now coming 40-50ft instantly, but more importantly concentrating on me and not whats going on around. She has been as much as 60ft but i'm not interested in the distance so much as responce at the mo. 10 or so to the fist and then lure work. for the first time today i used both lures on the lines, and from the T perches for height not pegged next to the bows. Faith was hypnotised  by the swing lure until i let it fall below her, a second looking at it then down on it for the titbits. Same with the DB, not sure about the movement, "fluttered"down beside it until i tweeked it and then she "let it have it several times at the head end. good result :D a couple more to the fist after and she was done and i was happy.
Spirit. been a disappointing week with him really, not very interested in anything until today!!!! a good 10 or so "instant" flights to the glove ( and he hits it VERY hard ) his first time with the SL on the line from the T perch and he hit it before it touched the ground and proceeded to kill it  , and then the DB he not only "chased" it down for the first time he hit the head end "HARD" and spent the next 30 seconds footing the head whilst i gentle tweeked and squeeked it  after it was "dead" he ate the reward and i picked him up with a leg. both lures awesome
all the time i was trying to remove the DB into the bag he was looking round me, bobbing and PEEPING for it.
finished with another 2-3 to the fist (still keen ) and that was that. will take him up another 1/4 and see his reaction then.
interested to see the reaction with a real carcass, but at the mo havent got one.
One point i noted and perhaps you guys can help, spirit was a little vocal on the lures towards me, i believe he still sees me as a treat. The mantling is fine i expect that but making in for the lures he certainly told me to leave hime alone?? i would expect this to subside once he gets used to it all just wondered if any of you guys also got this?
Ian Wileman

Pitty you are so far away WW, we could go out up here and have some fun with yours and mine matey! Really glad things are going so well for you, and just think, next moult you will be able to man your birds much further into and out of it (or if you are lucky - right through it!!)
Wightwings
26-11-2004, 02:44 PM
Thanks Ian. i must admit i do like to keep em manned thro the moult tho obviuosly not flying  Im reasonably happy as they are both a couple of oz up on the take up weight. My gut instinct at the moment is Faith will probably enter around 2.2 to poss? 2.3 ish and spirit is still a bit of an enigma. at 1.9.1/4 today he would have killed anything, you could just see it in him! so i;m guessing he will be entered around this weight but comfortable to just fly around 1.10 or so.
its early yet only two weeks work on them and not too much this week.
maybe we can still sort out some sort of feild meet before the end of the season?
you never know.
all the best

much of a muchness today, Faith 2.41/4 Spirit 1.91/2 hes up the 1/4 i wanted.
Faith very good, coming well, responded to both lures well and did her first jump ups today :D only 5 she had done enough and seemed bored. Im going to nip her back to 2.4 and she if she has a bit more "determination" in her actions i got the impression she was going thro the motions today ( they are good motions tho)
Spirit, well what can i say about this little lad?? You know that feeling you get when you realise a bird has "clicked" i.e. suddenly knows what its all about. I'v got that with him.
took him up the extra 1/4 oz as i said to see how he goes. in brief, 60ft INSTANT and hitting hard at least 10 times, swing lure INSTANT again hit hard and footed it well! DB chased it INSTANTLY hit it with venom, kicked the **** out of it for a while, fed off it and then kicked some more **** out of it  I though that would be enough.........ooooh noooo 15 jumps ups from ground to my glove held as high as i could. I stopped at that as i didnt want him to eat anymore but he was STILL looking.
best of all he was doing everything with gusto today and enjoying himself.
Off up to Huxleys tomorrow so see how things go. first time travelled out, new place, new people etc. not holding out for too much success the first time but should do em good.

NO is the simple answer for the first couple of times, the adrenlin kicked in severe and the bind was superb. just a quick update since last week:::::
Faith is doing great and flying keen at 2.4
During the week whilst out in the "baron" back fields she has had a look at, and only just missed both a Hen and a cock pheasant. she's up to 30 or so jump ups when not flying and getting fitter. onother 1/2oz or so off me feels.
Spirit went free Tuesday at 1.9 but not had him "out" over the wall into the fields yet. (weather, work etc ) hes getting VERY fit and jump ups until your arm falls off.
He also hits the glove hard from any distance but the sticky foot it easing a little. Not sure if i would fly him with other birds for a while yet hes still possesive over his food and very very fast through the air. going to a a superb hunting bird you can see it in him.
Well done Chris, youve done well,in only 4 weeks, you should expect to enter her in a couple of years :!:

no problems with em at all. Pity the ground around here is to sodding desolate, nothing but ploughed fields and hedgrows so nadda, nothing, sod all for them to have a look at apart from three young deer.
will get them out on some "hunting " land now i'm happy they will mix.
Faith is in need of that first kill, you can see it in her so the sonner the better now. Im off next week so hope to get out an about a lot more.
the young fellow was a little overawed with everything so although responsive perhaps another 1/4oz off to sharpen him a little all in all very pleased with them both. :D

thanks Andy, i have to say im quietly please with faith, she is just SOOO loyal and never stops peeping and chirping whilst out and about and just loves riding the fist, and uses it as a welcome perch to land on in between tree lines etc, and not just as a source for food :D
that's one of the reasons i never cast my birds either.

not yet, with Carol, after all spirit is her bird and responds to her better than me, Faith tho responds to us both, Carol as well
will do once they are used to the situation as we used to with the males we had in a cast. could call them both in one fist and dress them both up no problem.

Carol took her male Spirit out around the fields today for a couple of hours on her own but there was nothing about. On the way back i went out to meet her. as we approuched the old barns at the back of the house Spirit left the fist and straightlined into the barns :?: we both thought he had had enough and was ******ing off, as he has never gone in there before, when we heard an almighty thud and crash followed by blood curdling squeels
we ran into the barns to find the little fellow on his first kill................................a bloody great rat   he had it by the head in a death grip luckely so it couldnt bite and was kicking the **** out of the body end like a pro. I managed to get my hand in on the head and crushed the skull. Carol let him open it himself, he fed on the heart and a few other bits and she took him off it with the biggest grin i have ever seen her have on her face (with the lights on that is  ).
Not the ideal first kill but a kill none the less and a flight of about 100 mtres into the barn.
