I notice magpies aren't mentioned much in this forum. Is that because their penchant for diving into bushes when persued means they don't off flights like crows and gulls?

Hello Des hows things mate, no probs for the 8th will ring next week. most falcons will take magpies when they get the chance, however they are more commonly hunted with hawks , maggies up in cumbria aint that common, but we have large numbers of spars and peregrines who would target them, also as i travel i do notice more maggies and not as many carrion crows in other parts of the country, where as up here we have high numbers of carrion crows who compete in the same food bracket, but any falcon ive ever flown would always target a maggpie if it got the chance... colin

I apologise. When I used the term "Forum" I meant the "Pursuit Hawking" section.

I belive a large female kes will be able to hange Small gulls.
Never did it, only tried with a small female kes on bagged magpies and I doubt the small gulls ( donīt know the latin name ) will give her battle like an adult magpie !
And on bagged magpies she did grate imobilizing them and killing them all alone.
( of corse you start with " prepared " magpies until she encounter her tecnique ).

kind regards !

Hi GoshawkRST
Iīve read your topics about your kestrel and your sparowhawk. It was awesome ! Your kes had really killer instincts.:box: But at first I have to catch some magpies for training. Maybee Iīll write you PM,for some advice. bye

Its finding magpies in good country , ie open with isolated bushes , and a tiercel that knows the game , if he will go up over isolated bushes and stay tight magpies can be caught quite easily, they are very smart and if the tiercel drifts , thats when the magpie will bolt and escape , but if the tiercel can get a couple of stoops in at him and stay right over, the magpie is in big trouble, o the other thing is you need to be fit, young, and have at least one other beater, i pulled both knees this year chasing magpies, i would take my dogs and the wife with me , its great fun when it goes right and you lose far more than you catch but it makes it all worth it when you get one, mark.

Great pics and first hand info there Mark, always wanted to do this myself but like you say you need a fit team to pull it off, not just the bird and the quarry, more variables than people think.

Grate pics !!!

As for magpies and kestrels, I get mine from the female spar.
If it wasnīt for the female spar and the cantity of free magpies she caught for me, I would not enter her on magpies.
So i start with pigeons, then the pigeon rised to 2.5 - 3 euros and that was not good !
So as magpies came free from the female spar, I gave it a try ! And it worked better that I would ever imagine !

Feel free to send me pm and weīll talk more!
kind regards !
