Hiya,

Don't know why, but i guess i got a obsession with falconry gloves. I've now got 5 gloves, 2 doubles, 1 single, 1 overlay, 1 treble and a pair of welders gloves My favourite is a double layer off Terry Large, who brings them in from the czec rep. They are very thick, even female red tails have trouble going through that, buts its short, only 13". It's orange, looks thick but pretty subtle.
What gloves do people use?
eg, I use my thin Ben long single layer with a female harris? but a red tail could go through my ben long double (long since stolen!) I've seen people us double layers with eagles, even a pic of a single layer once! I guess thats how hard your bird grips lol.
Do you buy yours off Martin Jones, Ben long, Westweald etc? Made them?
Do you use leather gardening gloves? welders gloves?
do u use a certain glove for huting? have a spare one, nice and clean for people visiting? I've a "post" double lol. Made is pakistan, bought off ebay.
Need your opinions lol, thanks,
Hannah
P.S, send in a pic of your glove if u cn.

i use a ben long glove the harris hawker duluxe it really is a nice piece of kit but his website doesnt show a picture.

i think martain jones gloves are very over prissed.

and i use a old welding glove if i have to feed a bird on the fist anything other than shin beef.

I cant fault Falconcrest gloves, I use a full length for hawks and a cuff length for longwings. For eagles I use a Karen Rose, Custom made, full length.

Hello Hannah,
I have one very good glove made by Gerry Lawson, and an even better glove made by Migeul Cano from London.
Oh! and he makes Hoods as well.

I make my own. I don't know why but I've never trusted bought ones for some reason!! Call me old fashioned!

Single layer buckskin for my harris and saker

I've made all my own except one from Martin Jones which is a nice glove(double)
I can't understand how you can feed a female harris tirings on a single. Even my double is painfull when they get the back talon pressing onto the back of the hand. And yes when not feeding I have found you can handle most hawks without gloves

Adam Barrett

i only use my single thickness buck skin glove when feeding tirings allthough i do this very rarley now-she never gripped hard enough to penetrate through the glove-maybe iv just been lucky with her.
all the best

I use a Ben Long "Yarak" from Falconry Originals
http://www.falconryoriginals.co.uk/gloves.htm
Its a great glove and I would buy another, I've never had any trouble with talons going through, even with big ferruginous or red tails.

"Traditions gloves". Custom fit to your hand. Only about $50 bucks(unless you add length of gauntlet or layers etc). This style has been made for many years now and still going strong. He has no web site but I can get a phone number if anyone is interested. All you have to do is send in a tracing of your hand and a measurement around the palm....They fit....like a glove. Made from supple goat hide and my reds can't go through it so it's great and flexible.

All sound nice gloves lol. I'm thinking of buying a nice, tough glove. I got 2 extreams now, 1 thats so thick its hard to move the top 2 fingers (good with eagles though) and the kangaroo, lovely and thin, and I can slip the thinsulate under it.
Thinking of buying a ben long/falconcrest glove, a nice, full length (all the ones i got are either 13" or 12.5".) I'd like a nice, tough 15/14". So I'm gona save my money lol.

I got mine from IAN VANCE double layer buck skin a few seasons ago now and it has been through the washer a number of times and as stated elsewhere a good application of ko cho line or neats foot oil never had a prob with either harris or reds going through it

Bloody hell Brian, that's the first time I've heard the words 'Timberwolf' and 'very nice' in the same sentence.
You have to be talking about the animal!

**** equipment and **** service. And that's when I'm trying to be polite.
They must have learned their trade from Hawkeagle...............

Brian Smith at Westweald does the full range, left or right hand and all his gloves are discounted, he sells them cheaper than Falconcrest were at the fair last year.

Thanks ppl, gona look around at the falconers fair, see whats going. I agree about timberwolf, his service is rubbish, havnt seen or used his equipment, but i got told they were rubbish by numourus ppl. I know one guy has timberwolfs double, and he says its ok for falcons, but his harris will go through, and its a male!

My my Brian, aren't you a sensitive one then. There was nothing in my post that was directed at you personally and if you managed to find something then the problem clearly lays at your feet.

I will continue to state my opinions with or without your consent.

Maybe you find that insulting too?

just out of interest.......does any left handers use a right handed glove?

kev

Varmint
07-01-2005, 04:31 AM
Yep i know Andrew Knowles Brown uses a right handed Glove for his Eagles, funnily they will completely refuse to sit on anyones left hand now!

I use a Martin Jones glove, and have used a couple from him over the years.

I like the shape, not too big or rounded at the cuff, which helps with feeding imprint's ect, they last well and above all else are comfortable!

For Eagles i use a thick MJ overlay which fits over my normal glove, giving me my own comfy glove, but several more layers of Protection.

I think i've posted this before but cant find it?

Ben long gloves......good price......very nice glove........very slow service

Martin Jones gloves........expensive..........very nice gloves......always collected but i've had other things and service ok.

Falconcrest ( from brian at westweald ) very good price......nice glove......best service in the game

Timberwolf..........get a welders glove they're better!!!!!

you get what you pay for in most cases and the above is just my personal opinion.

WW, out of interest what is your idea of service!! Everything I have ordered from Martin Jones has been next day. Ive waited weeks for brian!

Wightwings
07-01-2005, 10:45 PM
mmm interesting.. an example.....phoned Brian the bank holiday Monday 3rd Jan for a new first aid kit. asked for price inl package said would send him a cheque.

sent cheque......kit arrived FIRST post day after holidays before he would have even got my letter and payment......its still not been cashed. all that equals trust and service. same previuos for my girls new hood and previuos to that for some new eyelet etc.
YES i have been a customer for long while but still you WILL find the same stories from other peeps.

ordered several items of Ben inluding gloves, hawking jacket etc. paid by card over the phone.............SEVERAL phones calls weeks and excuses about game fairs later gear came..........ordered a kite..same thing.
admit last time i bought off Ben was 18 months ago but every order was the same no matter what it was, chase chase weeks later

had several Falcons off Martin, and i must say SUPERB birds too and aways collected them. Hes a good business man and in business sometimes money is god. unfortunately with Martin this is the case. all cheques cleared before dispatch (fair enough ) always top doller for his gear ( again fair enough) but i must say as per my post above if you read it never had service problem from Martin.

like i say each to their own you get what you want at the price you want to pay.

I have to admit, this has been my experiences also, every excuse, it was posted on such and such date etc, slow to reply to email..... not good business in my book, especially when you're spending a good few hundred quid on his equipment.
A friend had the very same problem and has never used him since for this reason.

I'm really pleased with what I bought, no complaints there, it's just the level of poor service that would put me off next time.

I think I'm gonna have to do something about that. :?

I agree with you, If he had been up front and said it was going to be a month or 6 weeks etc then at least you know where you stand, you either order or you go else where, but at least it doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth (so to speak  ).

Yeah your damn right on the buisnessman front. I remember bartering with him on the phone about kangeroo leather and him arguing that he wouldn't sell me any unless I bought a full hide, in the end I gave in and went for the full hide...

Im the same as you WW, I got stuff from all the falconry merchants, but the last time I ordered from brian he did say his suppliers couldn't keep up with him, he may have over come this by now? And he is very good value for money.

Heyup!

Struck Lucky on ebay, Martin Jones eagle overlay started £10, I got it at £27 (inc p+p) so I'll be testing that out! I'm saving up to buy a double glove of his at the falconers fair (yay yay yay!!) and keep workin on my dream to own an eagle!
As far as gloves go I now have:

Kangaroo double (V. Thin)
Czek double (v. Thick)
Pakistan double (too big)
Westweald overlay (cut to fit my hand)
Red tail overlay (for footy birds and another one for eagles)
Pair of welders gloves
Single layer glove (Ben Long)
3-layer glove (too big)
NEW! MaJ eagle overlay

Will buy a MaJ double or stainlavs or (choises) westweald double. Needs to be 15" or 17" to use with eagle overlay. I love using different gloves, trying them out and see what is best. So far, the kangaroo glove is THE BEST!! no competition! Its pretty cheap at £35, and only 12.5" long, but if a 14yo old can pick up a footy female european on it - its well worth it.

If you have any old gloves that you think are past it, I've now got very good at cleaning gloves, with 8 to practice on. I'm also looking for old gloves that people dont want for any reason, if they have a hole as I can sew them up or patch them up enough for big birds etc. Dont throw away your gloves, PM me (with a pic if possible) and I wil sort something out. Especially looking for a MaJ double or single glove, Ben Long double and any other "big name" gloves to put to the test.

Thanks for reading, happy hawking!

Doug Pineo, cheap, not to sweaty in the warmer months and suitable for a male gos and below. Ideal for small falcons. Nice and lightweight.

I use Pineo also, and for the eagles I use Northwoods... sometimes with a long overlay!
Pineo's are great, a litlle bit soft and thin for footy birds, but ok... The Northwoods ones, I still don't know what to think, we've got 2 and in the first week one of them got completly trashed by our female Eurasian Eagle Owl... The other one is still hanging on, let's see what happens!?
