Hi everyone ,im sorry if this has been discussed before but here goes.Im an avid falconer who loves all aspects of the sport.I havnt (up until august) had a bird for a while due to loyalty to my ex girlfriend(she never liked me doing it really:roll: )I always wanted to go into bird control, but was too worried about money(keeping our flat going)but now ive split up with her i live at my folks:roll: for the time being but i have no ties,no commitments(apart from me fhh)and would love to start my own bird control buisness next year.I say next year as i would like time to save up ,working at my current job and also want to wait for the 2008 youngsters. So my question is ....What is the best falcon for bird controls? Obviously gulls and Corvids are the main quarries so i thought of larger birds such as Gyr/sakers ,Pere / sakers but i would like a bird that i could breed from once (if ive still got it)its retired so was wondering along the lines of pure peregrine female .I know you can breed from Gyr /Sakers but i have been told that they soke up rain too easily and would do better with something with pere in it if im to fly on drizzly days.Ive flown Pere/prairies and to be honest i think there would be better birds for bird control! So if anyone can advise me on the best bird in their opinion for bird control and any other aspects i might need to know such as relavant licenses etc etc i would be extremeley greatful.

Many thanks
Rob

How shall i put this.
This thread has reared its head before by different people asking the same question.
Now, how many people will think i wish to go into business but how can i do it?
many , i would of thought.
But when you wish to start a viable business there is a lot more than just trying to pick up tips from those already doing the work in your area.
After all, if you think a viable business should just offer up the how to advice,to a start up in there area, who will then compete with their customers, then you will never make a business person.
Stick to harris hawking and try a career in something you are skilled at? which is?

I dont just think the only way, is to seek a bit of advice ,i have done other research but thought there might be people on here who could offer there opinions.I do feel a bit resentful to the way you say stick to harris hawking and a career your good at! Are you insinuating im not a good falconer!Because thats how i read it.I hope im wrong!

Thanks for the reply . I did wonder if the "buzz" goes, but maybe not for everyone. My 1st post was a little broad minded just on the hope of a range of opinions comes in.Maybe comparitivley i dont know anything on bird control, but if you go into a buisness consortium the first thing you will be told to set up a buisness is ...get information from wherever you can however you can and thats all i was merely doing!

Rob, mate. Nobody said you were a **** falconer! I think so many Harris hawkers have got a chip on their shoulder, and are too quick to defend what they do, even when they are not being insulted. Its just that what you are asking about is not falconry, but buisness....you cant blame you're potential competitors for being a little cagey about their buisness secrets.

Look m8 not being funny ,but if you do not know what you are doing then you only stand to tarnish the names of those that do.
if your boiler needs fixing , who do you get in.
Bird control and falconry are two different disciplines, if you can recognise this and also have the business acumen, and insurance policis in place in order to work with multi million pound companies, and have all the method statements in place, and hav all the necessary procedure in place then go for it.

have you ever been in a landfill ,they are not the nicest of places to be in ,the municipal waste stinks and they don't just take municipal waste either, they take in hazardous waste so you have to know what your doing and you have to walk around on top of it .In winter they get muddy (if it is mud) and in the summer they get billions of flys .Im a skip lorry driver and I go to landfills every day and the other day I was tipping and they had just had some contaminated soil tipped it had ammonia in it and it was burning every ones eyes and throats can you imagine what it would do to your birds

Go for it mate, facing new challenges is the way we are designed and what we are made for, do your research, speak to the right people, don't let quotes like "multi million pound" and "method statements" put you off

You could always look at going down the “franchise” route…….

the answer to your question is simple . . . any falcon from male p/s female p/l to large female gyr hybrids will do the job, if trained correctly it is not the falcon choice that is important . . . but the choice in falconer !!! i have been flying falcons on landfills since "86" and have never "lost the buzz" . . .absolutly love wat i do . . . rook n gullhawking for a living is the mut's but be warned i have seen thousands of falconers come and go it is a revolving door career. . . money not great cold n dirty in winter i have gave it a break a few times but never "lost the buzz" i always return . . .birdcontrol rocks :supz:

Rob.......beware....mentioning 'pest control business' on here brings out the defensive streak in some of the members.......I fell victim to this nearly a year ago, asking for business advice, ended up in a massive slanging match, and have only just begun to look at the forum again since then!
good luck mate.
