would be interested in ppls opinions or how they pick up from kills?
its i have heared that some ppl only reward on the fist after a kill and dont feed up from it.
its just that today my gos jumped up onto my fist after i dispatched the rabbit. but i did open it up for him to feed. but he has great mannners on kills and can take him off a kill with no fuse.

Sounds like to me he way your Gos is doing it is great and you should keep things as they are. A good bird that steps off the kill to the glove is nice to see and even nicer to own.

I throw a small food offering to the side, he (imprint)leaves the kill immediatly and then steps up to the glove on completion.

i put a chick head just out of reach of the bird so she steps off to get it then once dispatched give a small reward and feed up after the days hunting before heading home, has always worked well for me (fhh is the bird btw)

I trow the lure down next to them after the game is covered and the bird steps off to the lure. then call up to the glove after they are finished. then it is off to the next one but if they will just jump to the glove great keep it that way. just my 2 cents

The gos steps up using a rabbit front leg and is allowed a few picks at it.

cool. so jim do you feed from kills at all? or just a reward system? and micky do you have any agression? as i had none today but i was giving him chick wich was finnished very quickly and he seemed to have the hump when it all went. but used the rabbits rear leg today and kept him ocupied longer and had no agression. think im guna us a tiring to get him off from now on.

Sienna is allowed to kick the c**p out of it as long as she likes but never feeds on it. I offer her a whole chick when I see she releases some of her grip on the kill, or takes one foot of which happens quite quick after I dispatch it. I never offer anything if she is still worked up and has a tight grip otherwise it could turn it a tug of war. She steps off with no hassle at all. When its the last one of the day I use a rabbit front leg in the same way.

Sorry one more thing. What she see gets. I never try and trick her buy offering a big piece and the slip it way once she is off the kill.

well im guna keep it going the traditional way in feeding up from kills and helping out. but am well sure i could deffinatly do all the other meathods. jst im abit scared to. i know he will jump to the lure and come off it with the smallest of tidbits.

its just he did settle down loads with the tiring till he got bored of it.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I get my hands in there and help. Subdue the kill even help her pluck whatever she is on. But never actually break in. I did open it up for her once to eat the heart and lungs , as it was a especially good flight. But she just sat there waiting for her reward

cool. its just iv gone from one end of the spectrum to the other, from a very posesive hh to a gos that jumps off the bloody kill to an ungarnished fist. just want to encourage what iv got already. as iv made enough mistakes in the beggining and now it seems to be coming good now

then thank your lucky stars. its not the case every time.

this is the most problematic thing with a lot of hawks.

i know harrisii lol thats why i have brought it up.

and thought its a good subject matter to talk about.

the birdas i have(hh) will do the same as yours but make sure it has 5 mins picking at the head for 1 the bop knows the head is where to aim for plus it gets a small treat for the eforts plus it doesnt feel like you are robbing it

this is just my view and it works for me with no probs

plus it limmits /minamises(sp) the chance of the bird feeling that you have robbed it this is my own personal opinion it could work for your birds as it did with my mhh/fhh,it will make a diff on what you see

Since I don't feed on the glove (ever) with this current imprint, or feed large qualities on the lure or kill (don't want mantling or possession issues) - I feed all food rations on the ground, for instance if 4oz of feed is needed to maintain weight. This food is cut up into smaller potions and is fed at intervals rather than given as a large chunk. I use this method with Flynn and have no mantling issues.

To trade off a kill, I get hold of the quarry - throw a day old chick out to the side, Flynn leaves the kill instantly, I dispatch the quarry and place it in the bag then pick him up once the chick is eaten.

Jim.

with my gos ..i would just throw out a chick leg far enough away from the kill so it had to let go ....its an easy was of getting them off....hold the kill down and throw it out of reach ...its different with my spars ...i just pick the kill up with the bird on it ....its much easier:lol:

In my view, there's no problematic mystique in picking a hawk up from a kill. I simply wait till she's busy plucking or swallowing, cover the kill with my fist, containing a pick-up piece and she pulls at that, stepping up to get a better purchase, without ever knowing anything about it.

Even my imprints behave this way.

well its the first bird i have had that is really good on kills. as all the other times i was scared of robbing and think that i gave them to much time on the lure bfore making in. but this time i walked up around over my bird whilst feeding from the lure then went in with a chick leg as the food was finnished. and think this has rubbed of onto kills so fare. the bird expect me to be all around it.

Hello Matt,
Did the exact same with the parent goshawks without a problem, also did the same with imprint gosses - but this method I'm using at present has made the manners on this imprint male goshawk a joy to handle.

All the best Jim.

I'm in agreement with Jack Mavro in that there are two stages when it's best to pick a hawk up. One is as soon as possible after the kill, before the hawk has begun to pluck or feed and whilst it's still thinking about the catch. The other is much later on when she's settled and feeding steadily. In between these times is whan she's most likely, if she's that way inclined, to play up.

It's how I like to do it anyway.

I guess it's whatever suits us Jim. We all have our own ways after a number of years at it.

If it works for you....

so do you think that you could use this method on pr jim? and do you think you could change to this method if you have used other methods previersly?

No need with a parent reared goshawk, I'd just step it off the kill to a glove offering.

The only reason I'm trading off to a piece on the floor, is that I'm not feeding from the glove at all.

Jim.
