AIM: To keep Skyes on the fist for over 15mins
Arrived home, got the boxed bird out. The useral bating around, waited till he calmed down abit then, but him on my fist. Talked to him whilst he put his feathers away, then moved over to the perch. Bated. Put over perch. Managed to tie the leash on, just as i was to plower him onto perch, he bated again. Didnt want to wreck his tail feather, so i let the leash go, stood up and scarpered. Was about 5m away, stood there till he went back on the perch, then I went to make sum more leashes.
Half our later, went back out, siddled upto the bow perch, with Sykes making small bird noises, waited till he'd bated and climbed back up, took hold of the jesses, managed to get the longest talon off the perch, he was unbalanced, so he put one foot on the glove, I started to gently pull up gently, so he put his other foot on, put jesses into safty, changed the leash (old one too hard - needs cleaning!) then looped around little finger. For about an hour, I kept walking him on my fist, then back on bow perch.
(Went on falconry forum for a while, starting to get dark now)
Back outside, I keep on talking to sykes, say hello and stuff like that, he's making his squeak noises still. Put some newspaper in his mews box, set the indoor bow perch up, put the radio on, the heater (make sure it works, starts working if it gets below -5 d c.)Same routine, wait 5mins for Sykes to settle. I'm using the new glove, now starting to look more used lol. Manage to grab the jesses, Sykes didnt like it - threw a wobbler by jumping up and down on the glove, being grippy, shouting and hanging upside down. Waited till he's calmed down abit, he regained the fist. (yes!!) Put in the box, didnt want to perch on the bow - no worries lol. Left him, came back upstair's.
Came back (can't keep away), peeped through the door, can see him sitting there daydreaming, with his while, fluffy chin at angle and the peacefull expression. Aww. Went in quietly, sat next to the box and a watching Sykes. Kept on talking, him looking at me and squeaking still. (no change) Off to dinner
Last time I will handle him now, I open the garage door, let Brandy (our cocker spanial) poke his head through. Skyes just watched, and fluffed out like an owl, no noise, left it at that for the first time intro to the dog. Went back in, more talking, up on the fist, no bates this time, def getting better, but the box does help calm the bird and make training quicker and less stressfull. Wa;ked upto kitchen window, let sykes look though there, opened the kitchen door, long bate. Waited till he calmed down again, took some time, then move into the dinning room/manning room. Got a piece of plastic on the wall for long-shots (eg harris hawks, commons, reds ect) and news paper (eg falcons, small owls ect)Wasn't to shure with Sykes. Sat there for an hour and a half, heavy bird, so I borrowed a walking stick to rest my arm on. Sat there drinking coke and opening chocolate bars one handed (how fun lol)Was there for about 2 hours, better leave it at that, before I went back outside, stroked his chest and top of beak, upto cere and forehead. Wasn't to stressed with that. Back outside, cover over and I'm watching more T.V lol.

AIM: Get a weight recording, give him a bath, and feed off fist if poss!
This is gona be fun, Boxed him up, he's fine with boxing, pack leashes and creance, meat pocket, mobile, keys and money. Got the wooden box this time (too heavy lol) so borrowed the garden centre's big trollies, went round the back - gates locked! Rats! I remembered they'd hidden the keys for me to get in, open up and put the birds out! grr, got the bird in box out, pushed the trollie up, got Sykes out, went round the edge of the lake, Syked a few times, almost got me in the lake (edges covered in mud) Got round, opened up, got in, found spare bow, next to hose pipe, put the multi hose thingy on, turned to "shower", let him get abit wet, turned on the cone, the did the feather (primaries and tail) turned to mist, did his feat, top of his head and chest. Picked up, 2 bates, then back on lawn to bask in sun.
Did my jobs, volunteer witht the flu at home, did another set of jobs. Got back out with sykes, walked him around the flying field, then onto a private field (with permission) let him look around, put him on post, picked him up again, no baiting so far. Watched from a distance some pick-ups going past with plants, put him on the spare bow, asked if the guys would let the engins run whilst i let sykes have a look and get used to the noise. Then they trundled off, Sykes seems confused. Back into centre, did the flying display, 2 harris, 1 bengal, 1 european, 1 jackal buzzard, 1 ferrug. Most are on the creance, only 4 birds flying free, the rest just needed some training. Finished flying, washed the meat bags, put on side to dry, joked in mess room for 10mins, nice cuppa tea2!
The big bit now, Sykes is to be weighed! Never done this before with him. Put scales at my height and in light so I can see the result. Lowered him on, he's suddenly gone shy! grips nice and tight, so I tease one talon and he hops off, and jumps up and down, then settles. The reading is 2lb 10 1/2. Reasonable.
Put in box to come home, get a spare bow, "T" stand for flying and chicks, quail, rabbit and beef. Dad comes in car, get packed and home. Spare bow on lawn, he's enjoying it, rope this time. We swap the perches round every now and then. He's got a plastic one. Thas as far as, will let you know if he feeds off the fist!
