Hi All,

I took my cousin out hawking today for the first time, immediately after my Harris was cast into a nice big tree he took flight and flew towards a steep mound he immediately went out of sight. I ran over to the spot where I thought he had disappeared. I looked and listened but nothing I thought it strange, as all was quiet apart from the traffic in the background. I decided to put the Telemetry together connecting the receiver to the Yagi. The signal was very strong so I switched the attenuator on to avoid the swamping of the signal. I was picking up a very strong signal either side of the mound towards the centre, I thought maybe he was in the vegetation so I started to look, there were still no sign of him or sound from his bells.

It did cross my mind that he had ventured down a rabbit hole and we were getting the strongest signal from below us. All the entrances of the holes were clear, until I had a good look down a hole, there laying deep down inside the hole was my Harris with a firm hold on a rabbit, he was so tightly packed in there and he was so far down that it would have been impossible for me to pull him out without risking a possible injury to him :( .

Typical I had left my spade at home  as the best way would have been to open the entrance of the rabbit hole up. There was a house close by so I thought I would ask if I could borrow a spade so I could open the hole up. I had done some ferreting for him once before as he had rabbits in his garden and asked me if I could ferret for him. I knocked on the door, maybe it was just bad timing I mentioned that I did the ferreting just in case he forgot and asked politely if I could borrow a spade and before I could finish the sentence to say why I wanted it, he said a stern no and that was that lol. What do I do now I thought :? !

I went back to the bury where my cousin was standing by and my Harris was now nearly out of site down the hole, plan B was to phone the landowner as he lived just a few minutes away. My Harris must have thought enough was enough and decided it was time to let go of the rabbit and he managed to stumble out of the hole. He looked a right state covered in soil from head to toe. Poor Buzz didn’t know what to do with himself, as if to say I went all through that and all for nothing. I immediately checked him over but apart from him looking a bit scruffy he was fit to carry on.

I’m just glad I was using telemetry, it certainly made finding him quicker and who knows what would have happened if he had got down further into the bury and totally out of sight.

Happy New Year,

All The Best,

HH

Its not uncommon maxi, esp with HH's, but who'd carry a spade for just such an occasion eh?

Two years ago I lost my FHH in abandoned dump full of concrete slabs.I think she went under after a rabbit and because it was dark and 2' of snow fell overnight with temp going down to -25C she was lost forewer.
