Hi Forum member, I,m looking for breeding tips and suggestions from experienced redtail breeders / successfull breeding individuals and wish to cover the following areas.
1: aviary design and specifics
2: food and water supply, delivery etc
3: pairing and individual characteristics
4: breeding, major things to do and not to do
5: general troubleshooting
I do not wish to recieve media and book archive material, this can be freely accessed, I'm interested in tips and suggestions from those who have 'first hand life experience'.
most appreciated,
Gino

Hello Gino, I have been involved in the breeding of redtails both at home and for a club scheme both with and without success. The club aviary for the redtails was very large but basic with a view across open fields at one end for the birds to look out on which I am sure helped the ground was rough grass which was full of nettles and was a pain to keep at bay, water came from the heavens food passed through daily on to small ledge, chicks ,rabbit, pheasant.
The nest ledge was about 4 foot square and tree branches used for copulation perches nest building was always done by both birds and plenty of sticks are required, however with the club aviary being so big it was hard getting her to lay eggs in the nest even though she built the bloody thing she still used to lay them on the ground do not know if this is a common thing and she was not a young bird and had reared young prior.
I never saw any signs of domestic violence with these birds and eventually she used the nest and all was well, spy holes around the nest area and feeding tray so these can be checked at all times the feeding area was higher than the perch so the birds could not drop any mutes on the food but it could be seen from all areas.
AT home all the above was done however bath water was cleaned each day via a well laid pipe and a large Tyre was used for a nest full of fine pea gravel, also used saw dust however pea gravel is better and safer to use for a lot of reasons the Tyre was a great idea but you do need to pack it very well and i mean well, twigs are still used and are a good indicator a solid perch for copulation is a most and measuring this out for height clearance is well worth doing a wide variety of food is better used to stimulate the birds , light is very important around the nest area but again it also needs to be dry and free from cold drafts and driving rain I would also use CCTV if you can I have now moved on to breeding Harris hawks and Would be lost without them one over the nest area and one showing the copulation area is best this way you can check all that is happening from a distance and for peace of mind it is very cheap to do link it up to a video recorder and you can set it to record 10 Min's every hour when you are out. hope all this helps All the best Alan.

You'll have to shout a bit louder Alan.
To cut a long story short, Gino decided that most of us on here weren't up to his standards, thats probably why there were no replies in the first place, so he left........Allegedly.
The actual scenario was much funnier than I describe........
But he definately went away with a bee in his bonnet.
(we just supplied the hive......  )
Anyway, I will thank you for taking the time to reply and welcome you to the forum.
Regards,
Lucky.

The other reason was he did not want to pay to be commercial sponsor on this site. Maybe someone can dig up the original threads though, it is really good for a laugh although serious at the time.
