One that is fit and mounts to a high pitch, in position on a regular basis.;)

This question will depend on many factors such as what game you intend to fly your surrondings your experiances with different species etc..

For me female Peregrine at grouse or pheasent

Male peregrine at partridge

Actually Paul IMHO physicall fitness is not really that important at all, however menatl fitness/ motivation whatever you wish to call it is. My best falcon 1st day free after 6 months in the aviary specked out and put in a beautifull chanceleering stoop that killed a cock pheasant dead in the stoop. Of course this was exceptional but I feel that the physical thing in game hawks is over estimated , Now psycology .. that is a a different thing altogether :yawinkle: HTH

I completely agree with you on this one.
I believe that once a gamehawk knows its job, all it focuses on is the dog on point and getting up to a good enough pitch. Because they're confident in their ability to kill, I don't think that this part of the job takes too much out of them.
My Gyr x Peregrine tiercel is 8 yrs old now and it never ceases to amaze me how he usually kills on the first flight out, after the moult despite doing no exercise (high jumps etc). I'm sure that he flys on pure adrenalin after being "pegged down" for months whilst moulting.
He tends to fly well for a few days - then his performance tails off and we concentrate on getting him fit by flying him - then the kills start mounting up again.
I don't think that there is a "best" gamehawk. The bird that has learned the game, trusts the dog and falconer and catches quarry - is the best gamehawk.
