Hi guys and gals i am after a little info i am getting a pair of common buzzards that have been together for a while and was wondering if it would be possible to hunt them together as you can with harris hawks..
i understand they are a pain to train well in the sense that persaverance is the key but i would really love to be able to fly the pair together once they are trained and out hunting
am i a step ahead with the birds being together already ??

Should not be a problem if you keep then used to each other. BTW they are not difficult to train, just take alot of work to get hunting fit.

ahh great thanks hm i was under the impression of harder to train as bone idle never thought about it in the sense of fitness :D
next question is it better to freeloft or tether them if i am hunting them ??
It is gonna be a while ,well next season before i think of hunting them so this year i have time to work with them BTW does anyone own a time machine or know a way of speeding up time to make a week dissappear in a flash :D :D

Do all your training first and then after the bird is working well and comes to the first you can freeloft.

over the last few days i have noticed a new buzzard on the fields... it is a light colour phase like a blonde....it is on its own so i can only think it has been blown of course with the high winds we have had the last week or so.
The seaguls & magpies are always giving it a hard time, i watched it for an hour yesterday & it even had a dive at a pheasent....pity it missed it.
Will the Buzzard fly back to its own territory or stay here now, we usually have 2 dark coloured buzzards here but i havent seen them for about 2 months.

me best mate used to huntwith a common buzzard, very young upto half grown bunnies.
he used to feed plenty of whole rabbits,to get them to realize what they where!and then use a well fed ferret ,in late summer ,autumn,to bolt small/young rabbits from warrens.
i must admit they were warrens out in the open-& it never caught a full grown rabbit.
never the less,it was more of an achievemeant than my goss taking a fleeing full grown rabbit.

Are you planning to breed with them aswell mate?
to me there feet dont look to be that small i would of thought if you put enough effort in to get them fit then rabbits would be possiable.

well they are paired up at the moment where they are and to be honest i want to keep things along the same lines as they pair up for life from what i have found out.
i aim to get them on rabbits and hopefully next season or the one after i will be fullfilling that aim :D
they look stunning birds, i love their eyes!!

They look nice birds and seem to have decent feet for CBs. Go for the rabbit hunting but I think you will have an uphill struggle on your hands.
Good luck!

Hello threre Jay
I have a male common buzzard which I trained myself. I have trained it to chase a rabbit lure in the hope to hunt rabbits. It has chased a few but it was never in a good enough position to catch them. I have had him soaring and was really fit. He sustained an injury to his leg which I think was caused by him bating away from a cat that was at his mews so he has been free lofted and I am feeding him up and getting him to moult so I can get him out early this year when he will be fully recovered.

A couple of photos, Hope you like them

Hello there Jay
You can pick my brains as much as you want. He has been eager for rabbits but I struggle to find them. He has chased but never caught. If you have any questions send me a personal message because I don't get on the site much as I don't have my own PC. I noticed in another thread pictures of your male Buzzard. He is alot better looking than mine but I like the light phase Buzzards. Anyway I'm going on a bit. Any questions send them over. Good luck with your Buzzards you lucky sod.

Hi there Lucan.
Yes my Buzzard is very vocal, he has been imprinted on people but now that he is totally fat he doesn't make a sound. I think he will be screaming again when I drop his weight again for flying him. You're not the first person to ask about that and hopefully no one else will. Cheers
Hi Wightwings.
I have always loved the Buzzard, A few people told me I should get a Harris Hawk and that Buzzards are slow and boring. I think its much better to have your bird flying above you circling and soaring and sitting in the odd high tree looking out for the odd rabbit (or rabbit lure) rather than a hawk that follows you landing on fence posts waiting for you to ferret a rabbit out a hole for a twenty yard chase. But thats just my opinion. It's great to get some positive replies to my posts. Cheers for that. When I catch a rabbit I'll let you know. Cheers again.
Gary.

A friend of mine used to fly a female buzzard and hunt with it, it was as good as any Redtail or Harris I'd seen, although birds like this seem to be the exception rather than the norm.
I only asked if your bird was vocal because it had it's big buzzard gob open in both pictures........

LLL.
