Crazy day today, here is how it went , Flew my mates peregrine/saker , 1st slip she didnt take them on for some reason, 2nd slip she chased a small flock of rooks hard putting them into a small hedge dave ran down and started flushing them out under the falcon, we were sure that she would take one but she ran out of steam in the end, very unlucky, next up was richards 3/4 gyr, saker tiercel , straight of at the rooks good strong flight beaten to cover , he is showing good potential . We then changed venues and richard slipped his pere/saker female at a single herring gull on passage, it was a good long flight going high, she stooped at about 5 times but didnt conect , then she stooped over the tree line and we tracked her for about 40 minutes, here is were it gets crazy!!! we were sure she was down on a gull on the edge of a housing estate , it was on a high bank , we had a good signal and thought it was just a case of locating her [ it was ] however as we got close , this is after about 45 minutes the signal started to move !!!! we thought maybe a cat or a dog had put here off and she was flying again, we tracked her for another 10 minutes or so and found her on the fist of a local guy that had took her off her gull and taken her home !!!! now here is the thing richard turned up and the guy looked shocked and very surprised , almost guilty !!!! he had put christmas ribbon through its anklets to secure the bird!!!! she had a telephone number clearly on her leg , and the guy had his own bop a harris hawk in a shed in the garden, now not jumping to conclusions here but if we had tracked her for longer than we did and the guy had removed both transmitters and turned them off what then ???? we wont ever no , he had , had the bird for about 1 and a half hours by this time, i liked to have thought he would have rang the phone number on the birds leg but he hadnt , maybe he was about to, but he seemed a bit put out when richard turned up, it makes you wonder. I lost a falcon last year, transmiter [2] just stopped , i am sure to this day they were turned off , its a horrible thought, it was a good day today and it turned out to be a lucky one also, mark.

some real scumbags around m8 eh especially as he was another falconer it is bad enough a member of the public doing such a thing but being another falconer u would think he would have given u ring or waited around for a little while to see if anyone was lookin 4 the bird sounds to me as if this guy fancied his chances but luckily u caught him in the act .
Hi mark, had a similar thing myself last year with a nice black gyr/barbary, never got mine back though:twisted: glad it all turned out ok in the end for you kerry.

hi
Sounds a bit sinister to me, why would he not call the number within an
hour and a half?! If that had been my falcon, there would have been
stern words......

Tht is crazy! My mate nearly lost his fhh to a member of the public who though it would b a good idea to offer the bird a rabbit leg, me & my mate were tracking her as this was happening. When we turned up some "good samaritan" turned up and asked if we had lost the bird. We said yes then he went onto say how he offered her a rabbit leg then **** himself when she went for him. He then kindly went onto tell us that when the bird dropped down on the leg he took his jacket off to throw over the bird so he could (and no word of a lie I quote) "so I could have it"!
To say our feet were close to having him is an understatement, Glad to here all is well though.

I reckon it goes on a lot, look at the imprint lugger that i tracked down to a display falconer after the owner lost it 3 months earlier.
He had been using it all that time and making money out of it.
Glad of the outcome Mark.

might be worth calling in the police re: theft to give him a fright...but then again you'll probably get a crime number and they'll call on him a year next Thursday....

I had a similar incident a few years ago mark, tracked a bird down was a 5/8ths male g/saker tracked it on a housing estate i was right on top of it, then no signal, I reckon it was in a house, as i got almost to the door the signal went, got the bird back the following day from a vets which was miles away from where i last got a signal, you guest it no tranny on him, i should of followed it up and found out who handed it in, there was nothing wrong with the bird

Lucky for you, Mark, that you got the bird back. Unfortunately, there seem to be a fair bunch of unscrupulous people involved in this sport the world over. Some like to steal lures and creances and others steal birds, shame on them all.
