Just got a new ferret an i've been puttin transmitters an collars on ferrets for a fair few years. First time i used her she was fast an real good, flushed 2 big rabbits out the hole an popped up hard on their heals an came to hand easy ... Minus her Brand New Collar... 3 times with 2 locators we've been back but no signal (brand new bats. an tested) must be down too far. Tried an ordinary collar an lead an found that that wont stay on either unless you nearly choke her!!! Any ideas folks ??? dont fancy harness i think they would get hooked up !!

Hi Coedhirion,
Occaisionally I have had the collar slip off thankfully I have been able to locate it and dig it out.
I find you do have to put them on reasonably tight. If needs be I also punch a hole on the collar for a better fit on the ferret.

I got sick of having to dig the collars out? the ferets were fine!
I stopped using them after i made a couple of good ferrets.
I work mine fat, with food in the carry box and although they are no where near as commited as some, they rarely lie up and allow me to try more warrens on the day!
I think that is the secret Adrian.
Keep them fed and don't work them till they are completely knackered. After all ferrets sleep something like 90% of the day.
I'm surprised they still make the leather collars. I keep thinking about cutting the transmitters off mine leaving say a centimetre of leather and glueing and riveting them onto a piece of velcro. This way the velcro can be adjusted to just the right fit without strangling the ferret.
Just an idea. It would be good to hear from anyone who has tried it

I had to dig a leather collar out last week end AND it was under a big tree stump! Once I got down there was a big buck rabbit sat right next to it, so that was a bonus!
i've used collers for years, even if you'r ferret doesnt lay up,but just takes his or her time you can creep up do a sweep and get some idea of whats going on bellow ground, maybe your mates being dragged about by a rabbit the collers there not just for digging out, when i fit mine it's so tight it looks dangerous, don't all start i value me little mates more than a 30 quid coller but i've experimented over the years and so far i've found it impossible to fasten it too tight,it's aukward enough to get them on in the first place,i'll always remember alot of years ago,my mentor in them days was a proper old duffer,he had the first locator i'd ever seen,i fixed the collar in place and asked if it was tight enough,he said has the ferret got its tounge out i say no,well it aint tight enough he replies.

at £30 a bunny flush can't afford to loose collars that fast. I had spare holes in the collars and she isn't too much of a wrigler when you collar her she kinda goes floppy when you handle her, but put her down and she is super fast. I wonder if you can damage the poor little b..rs if you fit a collar too tight. Went out with other ferrets last 2 days, 3 ferrets about 3 hours ferreting pointed holes so lots of flushes & not one lost collar. That means it is just this one ferret !!!! Wouldnt bother only she is real good & I wont work ferrets without locators incase they get caught up. Only had to dig out twice luckily, but it is useful to know whats going on down where sometimes.
